Coaching career of Emmett 14 (FBCB2010)

A change in plans. I was probably a bit to ambitious with what my plan was for this thread originally, but I need to find a happy medium between time constraints and chronicling this, which I seem compelled to do.

The NAU team was ideal, I was wanting to play a west coast team for once, but basically the scholarship/roster situation was so dire in Flagstaff, that it made me pretty reluctant to play it. I simmed forward some more, got what looked like a promising situation at LIU-Brooklyn. But, the game kept crashing for some reason when I opened the 'gameplan' tab, but only for LIU-Brooklyn, and not for the other teams I tested, couldn't get it to work with my rudimentary attempts at fixing it.

Then, on to the next one and now I'm at UMBC, Maryland-Baltimore County, famous in modern times for being the first team to knock off a #1 seed in the NCAA tournament.

They are in the American East conference, coming off of a 13-18 (9-9) season that saw the end of the 5 year Justin McNeil regime.

November 1983

We're going to do this a bit in media-res. It's November, 1983 and the rumor around Baltimore (for the few fans they have), is that Emmett 14 doesn't know how to coach at the end of games, and also that he has a stupid last name.

My coaching career got off to an 0-4 start, with losses of 3, 1, 1, and 6. Before finally winning a home game against Robert Morris, winning by just 4.

It's been a good month, though. A major recruiting haul for the Terriers, as we'e already filled 4 of our 8 scholarships, and it's a very solid core, especially for the America East. But, we'll get there soon enough.

There are only 8 scholarship players on the roster, the other 5 being walk-ons, which explains why we have 8 offers to give out this year. This team is all about the perimeter. Blevins (Sr, 12.5 ppg), Taylor (Jr, 16.6), Charleston (SR, 14.4), all had solid years last year and each have some talent, even if they have flaws. All three of them have gotten off to a rough start this year, and I think those percentages will improve and it should let us compete in our conference.

Our posts are a different story, Williamson is a senior, and Flores is a 3/4 combo that is starting sooner that he should have to. Jester and Sehic are both walk-ons, each with decent niche ability.

Smith is a talented looking sophomore point guard and Barney is a really talented looking freshman. Wong is a senior who won't be missed much.

Re: Coaching career of John Howell (FBCB2010)

Nice! Never tried FBCB2010, is it better than Daft Day College Basketball 2019?

Tennessee is a monster program, they've got a maxed out coach and have their pick of the recruits in the SE, and typically just out talent teams.

Game 1 - really bad shooting performance by both teams, not a great impression of my perimeter players who will be the only reason we possibly have some success this season. Jester has some offensive punch off the bench that we really need.

Game 2 - We trade baskets down the stretch, they hit a go ahead one with 18 seconds left, and we miss our last attempt and the game. Taylor got hot and hit some threes, Tye Barney has provided offensive punch as a freshman and plays solid defense.

Game 3 - Holy Cross is a solid program and has a good looking team, but we were very hot from three and held the lead for 95% of the game. They hit some threes at the end of the game, including a game clincher at the buzzer after Taylor had hit two free throws with 5 seconds left to take the lead.

Game 4 - UMASS is a pretty sad A-10 program right now, but had us at arm's length the whole game, and really the game wasn't even as close as the score indicated. Williamson grabbed 16 rebounds and was about the only highlight in the box score.

Game 5 - finally our first win. Robert Morris didn't hit a single three and missed free throws, so we were lucky to win, especially with the free throw problems we had. Taylor was in foul trouble and Blevins and Charleston were not very good. Jester had a strong game off the bench, and despite being walk-ons, he and Sehic are decent enough reserves at this level.

Recruiting Update 1

It was a bit of a rocky start to recruiting as most of our initial targets (we had 8 scholarships to play with, even if our budget is barebones) either were academically questionable or had better offers right off the bat. The ship righted in October and November though, as a few guys became eligible that we had a head-start on, and some secondary prospects had immediate reciprocity and look like they can play.

Here they are:

We'll start with him, because he was the first to commit. He's a defensive minded guard that helps out on the glass despite his small stature. He's never going to be a dynamic passer or scorer, but he should bring enough to the table to contribute at this level, if not right away.

He's listed as a point guard, but he's an undersized shooting guard all the way. He's a really strong three point shooter, who does a solid job defensively despite his lack of size, and he's especially strong at getting steals. He should be able to provide offensive punch on day 1.

He's listed as a shooting guard, but has a higher chance to play point than Talton. Another solid defender who has a decent looking offensive game. Even if he stays at the 2 or 3 (due to decent size), he has the ball skills to be a strong secondary ball handler.

Now, the crown jewel. He was initially not qualified academically, but we had so many scholarships to play with, it wasn't a big deal to use one on him while the summer passed by. He got his books in order, and we held off an onslaught of low level major conference teams, even though they don't show up on his list, they were there, I swear!

But, he looks like a real stud for this level. He doesn't defend, but we will block shots, really rebound the ball and has a solid offensive game, including a decent three point shot. We are trying to grab at least two more post recruits, and I wouldn't be surprised if they are all JUCOs, but I'd have to guess that Bailey will start immediately and be a 4 year starter.

I love it. I have DDCB, and haven't played it as NEARLY as much. But, FBCB is much quicker, more stable, you can actually tinker with the engine to get the stats you want. Far more customizable, which I love. Really, the only thing I think DD has is the slickness of the UI, which is light years past FBCB, and the strategy is more in-depth. But, it's certainly not like FBCB lacks that.
