Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown will be an integral part of the Boston Celtics' success for the upcoming season.

by Edward Kincade l September 20, 2019
BOSTON, MA

Last season left a bad taste in the mouths of both players and fans. The only remedy for that situation would be to move forward. The first major acquisition of the offseason came with another departure. Fourth-year point guard Terry Rozier was sent to the Charlotte Hornets part of a sign-and-trade deal. The Boston Celtics received All-Star point guard Kemba Walker in return. A few weeks later, the Celtics signed free agent center Enes Kanter. Though more limited than his predecessor Al Horford, Kanter is known for his ability to grab rebounds and work in the low post.

At this point, the free agent market didn't have much to offer. The Celtics were also limited in terms of players and draft picks that could be used for trades. With that, the Celtics had to rely on what they have at the moment for the upcoming season. One positive for the team was the fact that Gordon Hayward, now almost two years removed from a gruesome leg injury, had time to fine tune his game during the offseason. Outside of that, there was a lot of uncertainty. Returning centers Daniel Theis and Robert Williams are unproven given the amount of time both may see on the court. That leaves the fate of the season up to whether two players in particular are able to be more like who they were during the team's playoff run during the 2017-18 season.

Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum, the third overall picks in the 2016 and 2017 drafts respectively, are now expected to take a greater part in the team's offense. Their production didn't meet expectations last season. Brown's scoring averaged dropped from 14.5 points to 13.0 and his 3-point percentage went down as well. Tatum, even though his scoring average increased nearly two points from 13.9 to 15.7, was not as efficient a scorer as he was during his rookie campaign. With Walker, a player that has a similar style to that of Kyrie Irving, questions of how they fit together may loom over the season.

To sum things up, the Celtics have most of the same pieces they need to be successful this season that they had from last season. With the exception of their lack of depth, the Celtics may have another good season on their hands. The players that left during free agency don't make them a title contender, especially since other teams in the league have improved. Like in any other sport, games aren't won on paper. The Celtics success will be determined by how they play once they lace up and take the court.

A lot of recognizable players switched teams during the offseason.

by Adam Turner l September 21, 2019
SECAUCUS, NJ

The NBA saw some drastic changes over the offseason. In a matter of a few months, the much sought after "Big 3" seems to have been supplanted by the return of dynamic duos. The most notable teams that seem to have gone in this direction are the Los Angeles Lakers and Los Angeles Clippers. The Lakers have their two stars in LeBron James and Anthony Davis while the Clippers have Kawhi Leonard and Paul George. Where does this leave other teams in the NBA? The following will look at the most intriguing teams in the NBA going into the 2019-20 season.

TEAM: Toronto Raptors
LAST SEASON FINISH: 58-24 (2nd in Eastern Conference), NBA Champions
2019-20 PROJECTION: 50-32 (3rd in Eastern Conference)
BIGGEST OFFSEASON LOSS: Kawhi Leonard
BIGGEST OFFSEASON ACQUISITION: NONE

Even though the Toronto Raptors lost the driving force of last season's championship run to the Clippers, that doesn't mean they have to start all over. After all, in they were really good even in the games Leonard missed. Also, they have emerging talent like forward Pascal Siakam and guard Fred VanVleet. That to go along with a good mix of veterans like Kyle Lowry and Marc Gasol will keep the Canadian team competitive and near the top of the Eastern Conference. Even though they beat the best team record-wise in the conference finals, the Milwaukee Bucks now have one of the best players in the not only in the conference, but in the entire league. That gives the Bucks a noticeable advantage over the Raptors.

TEAM: Indiana Pacers
LAST SEASON FINISH: 48-34 (5th in Eastern Conference), lost 0-4 in 1st Round
2019-20 PROJECTION: 43-39 (6th in Eastern Conference)
BIGGEST OFFSEASON LOSS: NONE
BIGGEST OFFSEASON ACQUISITION: Malcolm Brogdon

The addition of Malcolm Brogdon isn't flashy compared to the moves other teams have made, but it should keep them afloat in the Eastern Conference. Brogdon's playmaking and shooting will be a bonus, especially since Victor Oladipo is expected to miss more than half of the upcoming season. With other teams like the Philadelphia 76ers, Boston Celtics, Bucks and Raptors seemingly better than they are, it's more than likely they finish in the bottom half of their conferences playoff bracket. They do still have one of the better centers in basketball in Myles Turner. However, he's not up to the level of other frontcourt players like Andre Drummond, Joel Embiid, and Giannis Antetokounmpo.

TEAM: Miami Heat
LAST SEASON FINISH: 39-43 (10th in Eastern Conference)
2019-20 PROJECTION: 41-41 (8th in Eastern Conference)
BIGGEST OFFSEASON LOSS: Hassan Whiteside, Dwayne Wade
BIGGEST OFFSEASON ACQUISITION: Jimmy Butler

Despite not making the playoffs, NBA fans and players got to give Heat guard Dwyane Wade a proper send-off. Wade wasn't the only major departure during the offseason. As part of a huge four-team trade Hassan Whiteside was sent to the Portland Trail Blazers and Josh Richardson was sent to the 76ers. In return, the Heat received five-time All-Star Jimmy Butler. As talented a player as Butler is, there are still a lot of questions surrounding the team's younger players. Some of them are how they'll develop around Butler. While the addition of Butler is big for the Heat, many of the teams in the East look much better right now.

Sophomore guard Luka Doncic is poised to have a electrifying season alongside Kristaps Porzingis.

by Adam Turner l September 21, 2019
SECAUCUS, NJ

Players like LeBron James and Kawhi Leonard are so talented that their presence puts their teams in playoff contention. The Los Angeles Clippers, who made the playoffs despite being without their best player in Tobias Harris, made the playoffs last season. The Los Angeles Lakers, though they missed the postseason, were in position to do so if James hadn't missed as much time as he did to injury. Outside of those consensus locks for top teams in the West, there are other teams that are more interesting to look at in terms of how their season may play out.

TEAM: Oklahoma City Thunder
LAST SEASON FINISH: 49-33 (6th in Western Conference), lost 1-4 in 1st Round
2019-20 PROJECTION: 42-40 (8th in Western Conference)
BIGGEST OFFSEASON LOSS: Paul George, Russell Westbrook
BIGGEST OFFSEASON ACQUISITION: Chris Paul

The fallout of Paul George's trade request resulted in a Russell Westbrook for Chris Paul trade. Losing that much talent at the top will have ramifications for the Thunder. Other teams in the conference like the Lakers and Clippers have drastically improved. The team that ended the Thunders' postseason, the Portland Trail Blazers, haven't taken much of a step back either even though they did shake up their roster with trades. All is not lost as the trade for PG-13 returned a young, talented guard in Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and veteran forward Danilo Gallinari. As of right now, the Thunder don't look like they'll be able to compete with the top teams in the West.

TEAM: Dallas Mavericks
LAST SEASON FINISH: 33-49 (14th in Western Conference)
2019-20 PROJECTION: 43-39 (6th in Western Conference)
BIGGEST OFFSEASON LOSS: NONE
BIGGEST OFFSEASON ACQUISITION: NONE

Even though rookie Luka Doncic burst on the scene with his amazing playmaking and scoring, the Dallas Mavericks still fell to the bottom of the Western Conference. A trade for the injured bigman Kristaps Porzingis could provide a great lift to this Texas team. That makes Porzingis, in a sense, their biggest offseason acquisition. It also helps that the Mavericks retained many of their important role players like Tim Hardaway Jr., Dwight Powell, Maxi Kleber and Dorian Finney-Smith. Like with any player coming off a long-term injury, Porzingis' adjustment period will be the key to the Mavericks season.

TEAM: Portland Trail Blazers
LAST SEASON FINISH: 53-29 (3rd in Western Conference), lost 0-4 in Western Conference Finals
2019-20 PROJECTION: 51-31 (4th in Western Conference)
BIGGEST OFFSEASON LOSS: Enes Kanter
BIGGEST OFFSEASON ACQUISITION: Hassan Whiteside

Enes Kanter's deficiency at the defensive end may not make for a big loss, but the veteran center did play well during the Portland Trail Blazers' playoff run. In exchange, the Blazers bring in Hassan Whiteside who had been known for his defensive presence around the rim. Facing a downward trend with the Miami Heat, a change of scenery may be beneficial. That wasn't the only change the Blazers made. They also brought in Kent Bazemore and Mario Hezonja. The emphasis on shooting takes away from the defensive-minded wing players they had in Al-Farouq Aminu and Maurice Harkless. Whether or not that pays off in the end is yet to be determined.

A. Coffey/Sore Right Ankle (1-2 Weeks)
T. Horton-Tucker/Sore Right Foot (1-2 Weeks)

The NBA wasted no time in giving fans one of the most anticipated matchups of the season. Both the Los Angeles Clippers and Los Angeles Lakers added big-time talent to their rosters in the offseason. The Clippers added two-time NBA champion forward Kawhi Leonard and traded for Paul George. The latter will miss this matchup as he is recovering from offseason shoulder surgery. Even without George, the Clippers have plenty of talent in players like Lou Williams and Montrezl Harrell.

Meanwhile, the Lakers completely reworked their roster in a trade for six-time All-Star Anthony Davis. Many of the team's younger players were part of the trade. Now, LeBron James has a player that can be a consistent threat on offense. The Lakers also sought to improve their dismal 3-point shooting by adding veterans like Avery Bradley and Danny Green.

The Denver Nuggets and Portland Trail Blazers played an intense seven-game series in the Western Conference Semifinals. The Trail Blazers emerged victorious, sending the Nuggets home earlier than they would have liked. During the offseason, the Nuggets made no major changes to the roster. With an offense that was 20th in the NBA with 110.7 points per game, this was a bit of a surprise. Defensively, the Nuggets are a good team though. Last season their scoring defense was ranked 6th in the NBA at 106.7 points per game. Their defensive rating came in at 10th in the NBA.

The Trail Blazers reworked their roster over the offseason as the traded defensive-minded wings Al-Farouq Aminu and Maurice Harkless for Kent Bazemore and signed Mario Hezonja. Offensively, the team performed well ranking sixth in scoring and third in offensive rating. Defensively, they were average. The addition of Hassan Whiteside, depending on how motivated he'll be, may help the team out on the defensive end and especially around the rim.

M. Frazier/Severe Right Ankle Sprain (4-6 Weeks)

The last two MVPs in the NBA will face off when the Milwaukee Bucks visit the Houston Rockets this coming Thursday. Forward Giannis Antetokounmpo showed why he was worthy of winning the award by averaging 27.7 points, 12.5 rebounds and 5.9 assists. With Antetokounmpo being so formidable in the post and in transition, it opens up opportunities for shooters on the perimeter. The Bucks may take a bit of a hit this season as the top 3-point shooter, Malcolm Brogdon, now plays for the Indiana Pacers.

The Rockets aren't shy when it comes to shooting 3-pointers as their offense is tailored around that shot. Guard James Harden led the NBA in 3-point field goals and was easily ahead of the group in 3-point field goal attempts. Harden isn't the only one that shoots from beyond the arc for the Rockets. Houston led the NBA in 3-point makes and attempts last season while placing 10th by making 35.6 percent of those shots.

I. Mahinmi/Strained Right Achilles (6-8 Weeks)

C.J. Miles/Sore Left Foot (1-2 Weeks)

I. Thomas/Sore Left Hand (Day-to-Day)

The Washington Wizards have the misfortune of starting the season by playing three straight road games. Playing on the road was a major challenge for the Wizards last season as they finished with a 10-31 record. Not even Bradley Beal could save the Wizards in road games. Although Beal pretty much matched his scoring average of 25.6 points, his plus-minus was -7.1 in road games.

Meanwhile, the Oklahoma City Thunder last season played well in home games and finished 27-14. That was a team that featured Russell Westbrook and Paul George. Both players are gone and offseason trades have changed the roster a lot. One player the Thunder can rely on is point guard Dennis Schroder. Despite coming off the bench, Schroder was the team's third leading scorer. As the Thunder build chemistry with their reworked roster, Schroder may be featured more in the team's offense.

Injuries and Suspensions
Former Golden State Warrior forward Kevin Durant reaches for his ankle in the second quarter of Game Five of the NBA FINALS.

by Adam Turner
October 22, 2019

Even before the NBA season officially begins, a number of teams will have to deal with key players missing a significant amount of time due to either injury or suspension. When one of the team's top players is slated to miss a lot of games it can disrupt the chemistry. Players that aren't regularly in the rotation or don't play a lot of minutes have to adjust to an expanded role. Since injuries and suspensions can be so sudden, there is no way to precisely plan for them.

Center DeAndre Ayton and guard Devin Booker are the buildings blocks of a rebuilding Phoenix Suns team.

The most notable suspension this season is to Phoenix Suns center Deandre Ayton. Ayton's 25-game suspension for violating the league's anti-drug policy will keep him out until mid December. Last season, Ayton started 70 of the 71 games he played and averaged 16.3 points and 10.3 rebounds on 58.5% shooting. Ayton, along with guard Devin Booker are supposed to be the foundation of a rebuilding Suns team. With Ayton missing nearly a quarter of the season, he won't be able to build chemistry with teammates.

Free agent guard Tyreke Evans, who played for the Indiana Pacers last season, and Brooklyn Nets forward Wilson Chandler are both suspended for violating the NBA's anti-drug policy as well. The major difference between Evans and the other two is the length of the suspension. Evans is being suspended for two seasons, whereas Chandler and Ayton are facing 25-game suspensions.

Two of the most notable injured players coming into the 2019-20 season are forward Kevin Durant and center DeMarcus Cousins. Durant tore his achilles during the 2018-19 NBA Finals while Cousins had the misfortune of suffering yet another major injury, this time to his ACL in August. Durant, now with the Brooklyn Nets, isn't expected to play this season. As for Cousins, who signed with the Los Angeles Lakers before the injury, he may return near the end of the season if all goes well.

It would be remiss not to mention the injury to Warriors guard Klay Thompson. Just one game after Durant limped off the court, Thompson had to do the same. In what was the final game of the NBA season, Thompson tore his ACL. In a Kobe Bryant-like moment, Thompson made both free throws as he was fouled on the play. Thompson is expected to miss the entirety of the 2019-20 season.

While Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry is expected to miss a significant amount of time this season, Klay Thompson will have to miss the entire season.

There are injured players that are on track to return this season are former Durant and Cousins' teammate Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors. Curry injured his hand during a preseason game against the Minnesota Timberwolves. The Warriors were going to pair Curry in the backcourt with former Nets guard D'Angelo Russell, but it looks as though that project is on hold for the time being.

Also slated to make returns later this year is Pacers' guard Victor Oladipo and Portland Trail Blazers' center Jusuf Nurkic. Both were injured during the 201-19 season. Oladipo injured his knee in a game against the Toronto Raptors in January. Nurkic suffered a gruesome leg injury against the Nets later in the season in March.
