BOSTON, MA -- For the past few seasons the
Boston Celtics have seen exceptional play from the point guard position. The Celtics latest All-Star point guard,
Kemba Walker, made his home debut Friday night against the defending champion
Toronto Raptors. Walker scored a game-high 20 points on 9-of-16 shooting to go with a game-high nine assists. Not everything went well for Walker as he also had seven turnovers. That amount tied the highest he had in a game. It was also the first time since his rookie season that he had that many turnovers in a game.
The Toronto Raptors did a good job finding open teammates and totalled 25 assists in the game.
As a team the Celtics were much better on turnovers last season with only 12.8 per game. Through two games this season the Celtics are averaging 17 turnovers a game. The Raptors took advantage of the Celtics inability to hold onto the ball by betting 17 steals. Guards
Fred VanVleet and
Norman Powell along with forward
O.G. Anunoby were the most opportunistic of the Raptors. They combined for 10 of the Raptor's 17 steals.
Boston Celtics center Robert Williams III puts in two of his seven points on the night.
Anunoby's play on the defensive end was the only bright spot during the game. The third-year forward struggled on the offensive end, shooting 20 percent from the floor and 30 percent at the free throw line. Veteran point guard
Kyle Lowry was in the same position as he scored 13 points on 5-of-14 shooting while also going 2-of-7 from 3-point range.
Celtics swingman Jaylen Brown uses his size to score over Raptors guard Fred VanVleet in the paint.
Those same struggles seemed to extend to the entire Raptors team in the fourth quarter. During the final frame the Raptors shot 33 percent from the floor, 25 percent from long range and 25 percent at the free throw line. Despite that, the Raptors still had a four-point lead with just more than a minute and a half remaining in the game. A turnover by Raptors forward
Pascal Siakam followed by a 3-pointer from
Jayson Tatum gave the Celtics a one-point lead with about 25 seconds left. A potential game-tying layup from Lowry rolled off the rim as time expired.
Veteran center Marc Gasol of the Raptors recoverd from his opening night injury in time for the game.
No Worse For Wear
Veteran center Marc Gasol showed no ill effects from his knee bruise, finishing with 14 points and seven rebounds. The injury occurred Tuesday night in the Raptors home opener against the New Orleans Pelicans.
Heavily Contested
Celtics forward Gordon Hayward struggled again on offense against the Raptors. Hayward shot 1-for-6 from beyond the arc and went 3-for-11 overall for 11 points.
