Oh no, not my Spartans! Well, since we are having non-stop upsets here, I'm going with Villanova.

2020 March Madness: Elite 8 Update

Upset Watch
  • #9 Villanova 79 - #7 Xavier 71 – Freshman Brandin Collucci scored 24 points (5-5 from three) to send the cinderella Wildcats back to the Final Four.
  • #3 Clemson 77 - #1 UConn 74 – The last remaining #1 seed has been eliminated as Clemson continues their run and make their first Final Four in school history.
  • #2 Kansas 84 - #1 Memphis 78 – The Jayhawks make another Final Four and knock off the #1 overall seed in a rematch of the 2007 championship game. Ernesto Parkinson shot 3-11, but grabbed 12 rebounds from the 2-guard position.

Key Performances
  • Martynas Curry gave his all for Providence, outdueling Jarek Kickert by scoring 29 points, getting 9 rebounds, and 6 blocks, but it wasn’t enough as UNC won 89-85.

NIT Update
  • Kody Dieng scored 31 points for Texas as they destroyed UCSB to make it to the NIT semis.
  • Sacred Heart has made the semifinals as well with an 83-60 victory over Rutgers.
  • Trevor Merchant’s NCAA career ended with a whimper (3-15 shooting, 12 points) as Mississippi State lost to Illinois State.

Around the NBA: March Update

  • The Bulls are bad, and now they are worse. Wendell Carter Jr. is out 2 months with a torn MCL.
  • The Lakers are on fire (winning 6 straight to end February), but they’ve lost Kyle Kuzma until the beginning of April due to a broken hand.
  • Courtesy of a 2-11 month, the Phoenix Suns are way out of the playoff picture. Despite being as high as 4th near the midpoint of the season, the team has fallen apart and is 32-42.
  • Joel Embiid won the East’s player of the month in March, his second time this season. The 76ers are 9-1 in their last 10 and in 2nd place in the East. He went over 30 points four times, and had at least 16 rebounds 9 times this month.
  • Steph Curry won the West’s player of the month, though it wasn’t due to his team’s performance as the Warriors are 11 games below .500 and well out of the playoff picture. The 32 year old future Hall-of-Famer is 2nd in the league with 32.4 points per game, and also adding 6 rebounds and 7 assists while shooting 46% from deep.
  • Rui Hachimura won the East’s rookie of the month award for the second time this season (the first was in December). He’s been one of the few bright spots for the Wizards, averaging 14 points and 5 rebounds per game.
  • Ja Morant also won the West’s rookie of the month award for the second time. He and fellow rookie Brandon Clarke have the Grizzlies just two games back in the playoff race. Highlights this month include a career high 49 points against Portland and 36 points just 4 days later at San Antonio.
  • Jimmy Butler missed most of March with an injury and Blake Griffin did not help the Heat as they went 3-11 in the month.

Projected playoff picture
6 teams in the East and 3 teams in the West have clinched spots, and if the playoffs started today we would see the following matchups:

#1 Milwaukee (53-22) vs #8 Indiana (33-41)
#2 Philadelphia (50-25) vs #7 Miami (34-41)
#3 Boston (48-27) vs #6 Orlando (44-31)
#4 Toronto (47-27) vs #5 Cleveland (46-29)

#1 Los Angeles Clippers (53-22) vs #8 Utah (39-37)
#2 Los Angeles Lakers (52-22) vs #7 Minnesota Timberwolves (39-36)
#3 Dallas (52-24) vs #6 Houston (40-34)
#4 Denver (43-32) vs #5 Portland (41-35)

2020 March Madness: Final 4 Update

Recap
  • #9 Villanova 90 - #2 Kansas 78 – With Arthur Acker out with a broken hand, the Jayhawks struggled to slow Villanova, who scored nearly 50 points each half. The Wildcats will face UNC in a reprise of the 2016 national championship game.
  • #4 North Carolina 100 - #3 Clemson 59 – It was a miserable night from tipoff for Clemson as 3 UNC starters (Pressley, Shelton, and Kickert) all scored 20+ points. Kickert went 6-20 from the field and the Tar Heels still cruised.

NIT Update
  • Illinois State are your 2020 NIT champions, defeating Texas 82-53 in the final. Senior center Sami Strong scored 44 points in his last 2 games to lead the Redbirds.

Oh, a rematch of the 2016 NCAA final, does Roy Williams get his revenge?

And a 4v9 finals matchup! Not sure if that's ever happened.

2020 NCAA Basketball Season Recap

Your 2019-20 NCAA tournament has come to a close, with the North Carolina Tar Heels winning the title game 97-71 over the Villanova Wildcats. The Tar Heels scored 60 points in the first half and never really gave the Wildcats a chance. 6 players were in double digits and Jarek Kickert finished with 23 and 11 and went 9-11 from the foul line. Brandin Collucci had 26 points for Villanova, but it was on 7-17 shooting.

The Champions finished 30-10 this season, and were only 9-7 in the ACC. They will be losing PG Jarrett Pressley and PF Jarek Kicert to the NBA and will need to rely heavily on sophomore SG Willie Shelton and junior SF Prosper Konryn as they defend their title.

National Player of the Year: Jarek Kickert, PF, North Carolina
The talented junior was the talk of this college basketball season and won this award and the national title by averaging 26.3 points and 8 rebounds a game, though his assists (0.2), steals (0.9), and blocks (0.3). Kickert also won the “Big Man of the Year” award.

Mid-Major Player of the Year: Zakee Roberson, PF, Rider
The big man was outstanding for Rider all year and edged out Gilson Mulholland and Dana Bright for this award. Roberson averaged 25 points, 12 rebounds, and 2 blocks per game for the Broncs.

National Coach of the Year: Roy Williams, North Carolina
This is what winning a national title as an overqualified 4 seed gets you: coach of the year. There were likely several more deserving candidates, but kudos to Roy Williams all the same, as he’s had an amazing career.

Defensive Player of the Year: Alejandro Floyd, PF, Memphis
Floyd’s solid defensive play was a big reason why Memphis held the #1 spot for the last month of the season, as the intelligent power forward anchored their defense and added 2 steals and 2 blocks per game.

Freshman of the Year: Jerry Sparks, PF, Kansas State
The Wildcats had 2 standout freshman (see the Freshman All-American team below), and it was 6’10” PF Jerry Sparks who won this award. The freshman is already averaging 20 points and 9.5 rebounds a game (and adding a few assists, steals, and blocks as well). It would not be surprising if he goes pro after his sophomore season.

First Team All-American
PG: Robby Laudato, Senior, Virginia
SG: Gilson Mulholland, Senior, New Orleans
SF: Raitis Engle, Senior, Texas Tech
PF: Jarek Kickert, Junior, North Carolina
C: Nikola Pattrick, Junior, Utah

Second Team All-American
PG: Rai Nagata, Junior, Marquette
SG: Vytas Kowalczuk, Senior, Tennessee
SF: Gordon Cousinard, Sophomore, Syracuse
PF: Zakee Roberson, Senior, Rider
C: Stephen Bathie, Senior, Nebraska

Freshman All-American
PG: Elmer Okpalobi, Memphis
SG: Rod Douglas, Indiana
SF: Jameer Trammell, Kansas State
PF: Jerry Sparks, Kansas State
C: Stewart Mobley, UCLA

Re: The Bulgarian Brothers – A College Hoops 2K8 & NBA 2K20 Dynasty

You're using the original 2K8 rosters with generated names, correct? If so, the NPOY and ROY awards make sense - Tyler Hansbrough and Michael Beasley were monsters in that game and seemed to win it every first season when I played.

Love how in depth you're getting outside of the two teams, by the way. Congrats on getting Northern Colorado to the tournament, looking forward to next season!
