Grizzlies Breakout Second Half Leads to Comeback Win Over Lakers
Ja Morant shined on the Hollywood stage with 39 points, 11 rebounds, and 7 assists in the Grizzlies 121-119 win over the Lakers.
Los Angeles, CA (AP) -- The new look Lakers started off their season more than living up to the hype. In their first three games, the managed a 3-0 record while winning all three games by double-digits. Coming into their game against the young, up-start Grizzlies, it seemed as if another easy win was on its way. That especially proved true after the Lakers raced out to a 15 point halftime lead. Anthony Davis posted a robust 11 points, 9 rebounds, and 5 assists in the first half, while LeBron James added 9 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists. The Lakers dynamic duo seemed to be in complete control and the second half seemed to be a foregone conclusion.
The Grizzlies had other ideas. In the third quarter, they outscored the Lakers 27-20 while holding L.A. to just 30% shooting in the quarter. Jaren Jackson Jr. scored 10 points in the period, and reserve Grayson Allen knocked down a trio of treys as the Grizzlies pulled within single digits by the end of the quarter.
The Grizzlies continued their run early in the fourth, outscoring the Lakers 9-3 in the first three minutes to pull within two. Several minutes later, Ja Morant put Anthony Davis on a poster to give the Grizzlies their first lead of the game at 100-99. After a torrid back-and-forth several minutes, a Dillon Brooks corner three gave the Grizzlies a 3-point lead with three minutes remaining in the fourth. Moments later Morant finished with another vicious slam to put the Grizzlies ahead by five. A quick 11-2 spurt, spurred by two LeBron threes, gave the Lakers a six point lead with 1:21 remaining. The Grizzlies fought back, and a Jackson 17-footer tied the game at 119 with 28 seconds remaining. On the Lakers ensuing possession, LeBron James caught the ball in the corner, gave a head-fake, and was whistled for stepping out of bounds. The Grizzlies regained possession with 10 seconds on the clock. Ja Morant took the inbound pass, dribbled into the frontcourt, used a Jackson ballscreen, and slithered his way to the hoop for the go ahead bucket with 3.6 seconds remaining.
That bucket, Morant's 39th point of the night, proved to be the game winner after Avery Bradley's 3-quarters-court heave clanged off the iron. The "Young Cubs" prevailed after fighting back from a 15-point halftime deficit against the 3-0 Lakers. Morant used the Hollywood spotlight to showoff, posting 39 points, 11 rebounds, and 7 assists on a robust 15/21 shooting. Anthony Davis posted a 25 point, 12 rebound, 10 assists triple-double in the losing effort.
