Coach Tovarich CH2K8 Career Legacy

Welcome to the introductory press conference for coach Dave Tovarich, who has been hired by the Dartmouth Big Green.

Tovarich: I'm just as shocked as you I've been hired. It's all a bit confusing. I'm not big on talking for no reason, so I'll just open it up to media questions.

Reporter: As far as I can tell, you have no experience whatsoever, so why do you think you were hired?

Tovarich: Yeah, it's pretty baffling isn't it? I last coached a freshman high school team with my roommate while I was in college at Arizona State, and I don't even think we won much. My guess is that this is the Ivy League, so no one really gives a damn if we win or not. Someone's just obligated to hire a basketball coach. I see the average attendance last season was 756 so I mean, who knows, maybe the school views the basketball arena as a quiet place for students to get some homework done since the library is probably more crowded. I assume the standards are pretty low. Maybe they just randomly pulled out an application.

Reporter: What kind of a schedule do you plan on putting together?

Tovarich: The easiest one humanly possible.

Reporter: Aren't you going to schedule some paycheck games and get some quality opponents to get the team ready?

Tovarich: No, money doesn't exist to me. I don't see the paycheck for the school if I go play Syracuse. I don't even know how much I make. Money may as well not even exist in my universe. It's important to get to 10 wins and a winning record and maybe 20 wins if we can so I can build my reputation as a coach. And get the team ready for what? The Ivy League? They're all just as bad as we are. We're not going to play anyone unless we accidentally run into someone in a tournament because we're not anyone either so why should we? Whatever you learn from losing to Syracuse can be learned when we lose to some other equally bad team. And we will.

Reporter: Did you just trash the quality of your team?

Tovarich: Pretty much, there's a reason they just went 9 games under .500

Reporter: How do you think your team is going to feel about that?

Tovarich: In 10 years when they're all astrophysicists or astronauts or genetic engineers or whatever, I don't think they'll care what their basketball coach said about their basketball talent.

Reporter: Are you always going to be so brutally honest?

Tovarich: Just make sure you properly convey the sarcasm. I don't want to have to sit here and do the cliche "that was taken out of context" yadda yadda yadda.

Reporter: Ummm, ok, so what style of play can we expect?

Tovarich: We'll start with the UCLA high post on offense, lots of 3's most likely because we don't see to have much going on down low. Man on man defense mostly, we'll mix in a just a little 1-3-1 zone here and there.

Reporter: Who will your assistants be?

Tovarich: Like the school did with me, I may as well just have picked some random names out of a pile. Slim pickings really. I hired Andrew Malone since he was the best scout available, although that's not saying much. Some guy named Magnus Moran will also assist me in recruiting mostly. Once the game starts, they'll just sit quietly on the bench and hold my clipboard or get me a cup of water because they're pretty much useless. They're lucky they even have a job really.

Reporter: What will the roster look like this season?

Tovarich: I like to keep just 10 active players if I can and hockey sub in the B team when the starters need a break. Usually I'd get it down to 10 with RS's but I'm only RS'ing my 3rd string PG. RS'ing most of them was pointless really because no one on this roster has much in the way of potential anyway, so they're not going ever be good enough to contribute. The sooner I can free up some scholarships and get some talent in here the better. So (looks down at paper) some guys named Graebler, Mathis, Weeden and Ware have been cut. I thank them for their contributions to the team, whatever those even were. Ronnie Dixon will RS just in case there's an injury and he can be plugged into the B team.

Reporter: You have 2 scholarships available

Tovarich: (interrupting) Isn't that stupid? I just cut 3 scholarship players, and yet I can't use them yet? Why not? Someone explain that! I have to wait another year to use them? Come on NCAA!

Reporter: ...so what positions will be your priority in recruiting?

Tovarich: Oh yeah, I guess I should let you finish huh? Definitely one big guy, preferably a C, but a big PF if I can get a quality one. Then just whoever the best available player is. Someone always falls through the cracks and I'll just pounce on the best player possible because anyone really is an improvement.

Atlantic 10 is current.

"Big East" is the current 15-team ACC plus Maryland has been returned to them.

"Big Sky" is the current Northeast Conference with Quinnipiac returned to them, but with no Bryant or Merrimack.

"Big South" is the current Summit League minus Nebraska-Omaha, with North Dakota and South Dakota replacing Savannah State and UL-Calcutta on the game.

"Big 10" is the current 11-team Big East.

"Big 12" is the current PAC-12.

"Big West" is the current Big South minus Hampton(MEAC) and Presbyterian(does not exist).

Independents: Cal Davis, Cal Poly, Cal Riverside, Cal State Bakersfield, Chicago State, Long Beach State and Utah Valley State

Ivy League is unchanged.

Metro Atlantic is current minus Quinnipiac.

Mid-American is unchanged.

Missouri Valley is current.

Mountain West is a form of its various teams over the years. TCU is returned and it is missing San Jose State, Fresno State and Utah State.

"Northeast" is the current Big Sky.

Ohio Valley is current.

"PAC 10" is an old version of various Big 12 teams with Texas A&M and Missouri back, but without TCU and West Virginia.

"Patriot League" is the current Atlantic Sun, but with North Alabama and Bellarmine not existing and Rutgers being added to make 8 as the only geographically somewhat close team(sorry Rutgers)

SEC is current minus Missouri and Texas A&M.

Southern is current but with the College of Charleston added.

Southland is mostly current but with Texas San Antonio and New Mexico State added to make up for Abilene Christian, Incarnate Word and Houston Baptist not existing.

Tovarich: Good win. All wins for this team are good really. End of speech. Questions?

Reporter: Was that almost too easy coach?

Tovarich: Yeah, maybe. We'll see if it happens some more, but I suspect really that we just looked good because we were playing a 5-24 overgrown high school. I doubt we'll be holding much of anyone else to barely over 30% shooting. We're lucky they're one of the few teams in the country with less talent than us. But we'll look that bad at least a dozen times I'm sure.

Reporter: Do you think the game felt a little short and that's why scoring was low?

Tovarich: I don't know yet. Seems more like god-awful shooting by two teams with little talent, so we'll monitor that too. Maybe when their confidence gets a little high they'll shoot better. We got to the line though, and we seemed decent enough from there, so we'll try that some more.

Reporter: If you keep shooting 28% on 3's, will you shoot fewer of them?

Tovarich: Doubt it. They played a little too much 1-1-3 zone, so we shot them with some people who are allegedly decent at them. Hopefully that improves, but I'll shoot 3's all day long against the zone if people play it.

Reporter: Do you think the win will get the campus excited for the home opener?

Tovarich: Do you think anyone on campus even knows we played?

Reporter: What do you know about your next opponent Mt. St. Mary's?

Tovarich: That they're just as bad as we are. Thanks everyone.

Tovarich: Not really sure what to say about that. Those guys shot 64%? I mean...LOL. That's what the kids say these days right? I bet they never do that again as long as they live. For their first game of the year, they were awfully amazing at shooting. You wonder how some of them ended up at such an irrelevant program. They played like they belonged at Maryland or something. Other than rolling my eyes some more, I don't know what else to do. We still hung in there somehow. Questions?

Reporter: Do you think your defense had anything to do with their shooting percentage?

Tovarich: Not really, we were tight on them when they shot, they were all contested. Seemed like the universe was just on their side or they were possessed by one of those artifacts from Warehouse 13 or some kinda Angels in the Outfield situation. We missed at least a dozen point blank shots and they couldn't miss anything. I don't blame the defense though. We forced a ton of turnovers too. The defense was fine.

Reporter: Are you concerned about the lopsided rebounding numbers?

Tovarich: No. We missed all the shots so defensive rebounds are easier than offensive.

Reporter: Next up is Alcorn State, what do you expect?

Tovarich: For them not to shoot 64%. If they do, then Steve McNair's ghost must be involved somehow.

Tovarich: We tried to blow it. We tried really hard. Someone has to learn how to shoot eventually. Uh, good win though because it was a win. More just it would have been embarrassing to lose. Not even getting a shot off at the end of regulation with the chance to win was disappointing. Good defense by them though. The offensive rebound on the missed 1 and 1 and putback by Marciano probably won that game for us. I don't understand how we could make 10 FT's in a row and suddenly at the end of the game, everyone loses their nerve. Hopefully not a trend. Questions?

Reporter: How bad do the 3's have to get before you change the offensive mindset around?

Tovarich: When we lose too much I guess. Not letting them shoot 3's won't help their confidence with it either. Luckily we can survive some under 20% 3-point games against all this other equally bad competition.

Reporter: Is it time for some pep talks to hopefully improve the confidence in the shooting?

Tovarich: I hope not yet but I may not wait much longer to start busting those out. I don't know how much it helps their performance though, just need to keep everyone happy throughout the season though, really helps you improve as a coach.

Reporter: Next you play your first of two against Howard on a neutral court. How important is winning a tournament like the Liberty Bell Classic?

Tovarich: Well, trophies are nice of course, and those really help you improve as a coach.

Reporter: How?

Tovarich: No idea, it's just one of those things you accomplish and the universe rewards you and you get to become a better coach.

Reporter: Do you have a preference who you play between Arkansas State and Idaho?

Tovarich: Absolutely. Go Vandals!

Tovarich: Another game where some garbage team shot lights out. That one guy should be in the NBA apparently. Must have been a 76er in disguise who came over just to screw with us. But we cannot shoot, unlike our amazing opponents. The people who are supposed to shoot, just can't. I'll be re-thinking the offense after tomorrow's last place game with Idaho. I know we're terrible, but they're even worse. They didn't play terrible for some reason and we did.

Reporter: How Marciano's knee?

Tovarich: It's swollen, but won't miss any time. Didn't contribute much once we got him back in at the end though, so may have to go without him. It messes up the rotation and even though he constantly manages to miss from 1 foot away, it's better than our non-existent outside shooting.

Reporter: When will you stop blaming the players for being bad and take some responsibility for not coaching them more?

Tovarich: Because it's their fault! And I'll get better players soon. There's a reason I put all my effort into my coaching improvement into the charisma aspect before the season. Can't you tell??

Reporter: So you don't care about this season?

Tovarich: We'll try our best. Getting 10 wins is important. That'll make me a better coach. Then we'll just try to win more than we lose. 20 is probably not realistic.

Reporter: How many more high shooting percentages by the opposition need to happen before you blame your defense and not whatever greater forces in the universe you seem to think are at play?

Tovarich: A lot more. Thank you!

Tovarich: Amazing how the opposition really takes a step back in a 3rd place game vs. the semifinals. Easy win today. We're on the podium of a 4-team tournament. We're really moving up in the world huh? Questions?

Reporter: Is today an indication that largely abandoning the 3 pointers is the way to go in the future?

Tovarich: It might be, our big guys played well and since we got them in foul trouble early and got the lesser players having to play some minutes, it was easy. Hopefully the few 3's we did take and made boost their confidence a little, but we can't count on the refs giving us so many calls in the future.

Reporter: Fewer minutes for the backups than in most of the previous games, is that the direction things are moving?

Tovarich: Probably, I don't have a lot of faith in them really except for Fitz who got some extra minutes because Marciano is still on the bum knee and we had to manage him a little. If they start hitting their shots a little more, maybe I can trust them with some more meaningful minutes, but if I have to used all 5 TO's a game to keep the starters fresh, I'll do it.

Reporter: Back home to play Howard again, will you change the strategy at all.

Tovarich: No, I challenge them to try and shoot 34-55 again. If they do, then great for them.
