San Antonio Spurs '21-'22: One Last Rodeo (2K21)

San Antonio Spurs ’21-’22: One Last Rodeo

SUNDAY, JULY 25, 2021: After 25 years, 1,309 victories, 5 NBA titles, and 3 NBA Coach of the Year awards, legendary San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich has announced that he will retire following the upcoming 2021-2022 NBA season.

“I’ve been trying to hang it up for 4 or 5 years now, but R.C. [Buford] and the front office keep pretending like my papers are lost in the mail,” the 72-year-old Popovich joked at his recent press conference.

Just 26 victories away from tying Don Nelson’s NBA record of 1,335 wins, Popovich sets his sights on the upcoming season. This campaign sees the Spurs franchise facing down a rebuild for the first time since they drafted a young man from the U.S. Virgin Islands, Tim Duncan, first overall back in 1997. Following an unprecedented 18 consecutive years with 50 or more wins, the Popovich-led Spurs have failed to eclipse that number for four years in a row. The Kawhi Leonard saga pulled the plug on a potential second run at a dynasty, and despite longtime Toronto Raptor DeMar DeRozan’s best efforts, the Spurs have been unable to reach those desired heights.

Now, with just 82 more regular season games to go in the coaching career of the final man linked to the vaunted Spurs championship teams, and his best player an impending unrestricted free agent, will Pop be able to set the franchise back on the right path, or will the Spurs continue to fall further from their former glory?

OOC: I’m playing 2K21 and I simulated a season to get to the ‘21-'22 season because I find the story and the starting point more interesting that way. I'll be playing all the games, so bear with me as I adjust sliders for best realism as we go. As I started this franchise before the real life draft, things went a little bit differently and my Spurs don’t look quite like the real Spurs do as I write this. The next couple of posts will wrap up the 2020-2021 season and offseason, and then I’ll post the roster and begin!

Re: San Antonio Spurs '21-'22: One Last Rodeo (2K21)

Report: New York Knicks, DeMar DeRozan agree to 4-year deal

MONDAY, AUGUST 2, 2021: Unrestricted free-agent forward DeMar DeRozan has agreed to a 4-year, $102 million deal with the New York Knicks, according to his agent Aaron Goodwin of Goodwin Sports Management. The fourth year of the deal contains a player option, Goodwin tells sources.

With this signing, the Knicks can no longer be considered the NBA’s doormat. After a respectable 40-42 season in which they just missed out on the Eastern Conference playoffs, New York has shown that it is once again a destination for a premier star, luring a former four-time All-Star and two-time All-NBA forward to join its ranks.

DeRozan’s choice to join the Knicks, in conjunction with his earlier comment that at this point in his career, he prioritizes a championship over money, offers a full-throated endorsement of New York’s ascending status in the NBA -- with up to nine figures’ worth of money coming to DeRozan’s bank account, as well.

In three seasons with the San Antonio Spurs, DeRozan averaged 21.6 points per game and 5.2 rebounds per game, while also adding another facet to his impressive offensive arsenal with 6.2 assists per game, almost two more than his career average.

He also served as a locker room leader, mentoring the likes of Dejounte Murray, Lonnie Walker IV, and Olympian Keldon Johnson, and will likely serve in a similar role for the Knicks’ young core of Julius Randle, R.J. Barrett, and recent trio of first-round picks Jalen Suggs, James Bouknight, and Keon Johnson in the Mecca.

Re: San Antonio Spurs '21-'22: One Last Rodeo (2K21)

Sources: Spurs poach RFA John Collins from Hawks on 4-year, $120 million deal, sign two others

The San Antonio Spurs and restricted free agent forward John Collins have agreed to a four-year offer sheet worth up to $120 million with a player option in the fourth year, his agents, Sean Kennedy and Jeff Schwartz, tell ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

The Atlanta Hawks will elect not to match the Spurs’ offer sheet for the 23-year old, Wojnarowski reports.

Collins reportedly rejected an offer by the Hawks worth over $90 million this past season. His bet paid off. A versatile frontcourt player who can shoot, rebound, and play defense, Collins steps into a void created by the departure of DeMar DeRozan. With Collins, the Spurs add another promising young piece to their already intriguing core of Dejounte Murray, Keldon Johnson, Devin Vassell, Lonnie Walker IV, Derrick White, Jakob Poeltl, and 2021’s tenth overall pick, Jalen Johnson.

In 2020-2021, Collins and superstar Trae Young led the Hawks to the playoffs as a fifth seed for the first time since the 2016-’17 season.

In addition to Collins, the Spurs have reportedly re-signed free agent forward Rudy Gay to a two-year, $18 million contract with a team option in year two. Respected in the locker room, Gay returns for his fifth season under Gregg Popovich.

The Spurs have also come to terms on a contract with free agent forward/center JaMychal Green, who was originally signed by the Spurs as an undrafted free agent in 2012 and has spent the last six seasons with the Memphis Grizzlies, Los Angeles Clippers, and Denver Nuggets. Green’s deal is reportedly worth $14 million over two years with a team option coming in the second year. The veteran is expected to add shooting and rebounding as a stretch big man around Jakob Poeltl and Collins.

The Spurs’ flurry of moves comes after DeMar DeRozan and longtime Spur Patty Mills signed with the New York Knicks and the Cleveland Cavaliers, respectively, earlier this week.

Spurs hang tough, LeBron puts foot on gas in 4th

The new-look Spurs took on the Western Conference Champions, and the results were mixed. Despite trailing by 8 after the first quarter and 12 at the half, the young, plucky squad turned it on in the third, outscoring the Lakers 28-20 to cut the lead to four heading into the final period.

However, to kick off his 19th season, LeBron James cut through the inexperienced Spurs like a buzzsaw en route to 41 points, 7 rebounds, and 8 assists, bolstered by an impressive performance by rookie point guard David Johnson, who added 25 points, 8 rebounds, and 6 assists in his first ever NBA action. Despite an underwhelming performance from Anthony Davis, these performances contributed to a 112-96 Lakers victory to open the new campaign.

"LeBron's my big brother, man, and that's just what he does," Spurs guard Dejounte Murray noted after the game. "When he gets going like that, you can't stop him."

The Spurs were led by a trio of 20-point scorers, including Murray, who totalled 25 points and 6 assists, followed by Derrick White with 20 points and 4 rebounds, as well as the debuting John Collins, who had 20 points of his own.

NEXT UP: The Spurs (0-1) host the Philadelphia 76ers (0-0) for another test against a strong opponent in San Antonio to kick off the year!

Simmons dominates hesitant, out-of-sync Spurs

For all the promise the Spurs showed for three quarters in their matchup with Los Angeles, they looked as lost and rudderless as detractors expected in this one. Time after time, the defense allowed Ben Simmons to slice and dice them. After a tight first quarter, the Sixers took over in the second, leading 52-41 at the half. They never looked back, allowing only eleven Spurs points in the third en route to a 103-71 victory.

When it was all said and done, Simmons racked up 26 points, 7 rebounds, and 7 assists with only a single turnover. Tobias Harris filled up the stat sheet as well, notching 18 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, a steal, and 3 blocks. Conversely, the Spurs had nothing going all night outside of Lonnie Walker IV's respectable 13 points on 4/9 shooting. Besides Lonnie's effort, the Spurs turned the ball over 12 times and were blocked 8 times, and it's clear that the young team has not gelled as well as Coach Popovich would have liked early in this campaign.

"It's disappointing, obviously," Pop told reporters after the game. "They're a bunch of tough players and they out-hustled us from the opening tip. They punched us in the mouth and we never stood back up. We had no confidence all game."

NEXT UP: The Atlanta Hawks (2-1) visit the AT&T Center for the third game of the San Antonio Spurs' (0-2) homestand to start the season!
