Christmas 2023 trade gifts

We are already at the christmas time of the year 2023 in our myNBA.

Pistons are surprisingly second in the East with a 19-13 record.
It is just the moment where players signed through free agency become available for trade talk.

First we test the water for Keyontae Johnson. He is a projected RFA by the end of the season after being drafted 2nd in the second round of the 2022 draft (32nd overall). He is a pretty good 3&D prospect but we have a lots of players on his position and he will not get full bird right benefit at the end of the season. So we look for a trade and OKC offers two first rounds: 2025 76ers (top5 protected) and 2027 Jazz. We gladly accept that deal.

But now we look at the possible trade options. We have three guys we may consider to trade:

• Devonte Graham, I love him but he is the only undersized player in our back court. We explore potential for him.
• Sadick Bey, he is a projected RFA by the end of the season and he is upset both of his playing time and role.
• Jerami Grant, resigned during the off season we are still struggling to make a decision on him but for the price of 8M / season he looks good value for money.

The targets are mostly players we failed to sign in the last off season.

We love Nikola Vucevic, because he is really an offensive #5. He ius getting ol but i think we could benefit from his playmaking skills in the post.

PJ Washington, the former Hornet now with Trail Blazers. We see him as the perfect strecht #4, he could be an upgrade from jabari Smith who fail to be consistent as a sophomore.

Then we would love potentially a PG upgrade for a guy who could play with Cade. I.e. ball skills are not fundamental (since Cade has the ball) but w ewould love size, defensive skills and shoot.

So there are options which need to be assessed...

26th December 2023: busy boxing day in Detroit

Detroit has decided to make a move. Nikola Vucevic has been traded from Los Angeles to Detoit.

The former Chicago Bulls was targeted in last Fre agency, but it did not work. He finally signed a 3 years contract with the Lakers where he played 32 games (3 starts) averaging 18.8 Points, 8.4 Rebounds, 2.8 Assits with 23 minutes per game.

Vucevic is now 33 years old but he can be an improvement adding a true post specialist to the roster, not only in termn of scoring but in term of playmaking too.

To get Vucevic we have to give Jerami Grant. Grant is a solid player and has been a key contributor forward for the Pistons in the past 3 seasons. We simply see more value in having Vucevic given the other options we have at forward... Time will tell.

Vucevic in the roster meant we would likely look to trade Isaiah Stewart because Bagley is considered core. Stewart darfted 16th overall in 2020 by Detroit is a projected RFA and would likely cost above 60 millions to sign a 3 year contract...

Trail Blazers are interested to trade former Hornet P.J Washington for Isaiah. P.J was as well a target in last off season free agency, he is a pure strecht power forward with strong physical skills. He is perfect to add competition with Smith Jr and Bol at #4.

So we trade on the same day Stewart and Grant... It was a busy boxing day in Michigan. It is with a bit of nostalgia that we send Stewart to Portland but we think it is the best decision for our team. NBA in the end is a business.

Vucevic and Washington are both under 3 years contracts.
