After a rocky start to the season, Texas State is really starting to hit there groove entering conference play. With my interview with first year Head Coach, Andre Williams he said this about his team: “We may be young with only two senior players on this roster, but we are very talented”. Talented is an understatement when talking about the junior guard from Houston, Brandon Bush. He has been the biggest reason for the Bobcats’ success this year. Unexpected by everyone, he leads the nation with 26.0 points per game, and is now one of the favorites to win the National Play of the year award. This was even more of a surprise to Bush. After talking to him, I can see why. The 6’7” 195 pound lanky swingman was originally was recruited to play wide receiver here. He just walked on as a basketball player, and made the team his freshman year. Asking him about trading football for basketball, he had this to say: “Basketball was always my first love, but I was just always better football. In college the more I played football, the more I started to not like the sport. After Coach Davalos (Previous basketball coach) suggested me to play for him, like the people say, “The rest was history.”.” This season is by far Bush’s best averaging only 11.9 points per game combine in his first two seasons. He also has a career best in steals and the amount of turnovers he commits. Bush’s success has reflected on the team most in conference play. They currently sit tied for forth place with Nicholls State behind McNeese State, Lamar, and UT-Arlington. The Bobcats will have a chance to move up in the standings this week playing two out of the three teams ahead of them. When asked, Coach Williams said his team has to play very disciplined, and efficient to get wins. With only seven more games left in conference play, Texas State will need these two games to try and start an end of the season run.
