So Toney has moved up to heavyweight now? I think it was FOX NEWS today where these guys and Don were on. I was at my gym running on a machine so i just read the caption, otherwise I heard nothing of this fight. Is this for that swag WBO title.

      Re: Toney Vs Ruiz

I hate Ruiz' annoying style but I also hate Toney's constant trashtalking. I hope they both die in the ring. But seriously, if Toney comes in fighting like he did against Jirov I think he can pull out the win. If he comes out lazy like he was against Rydell Booker then i'd pick Ruiz by decision.

It's hard to pick against Toney in any situation but I think i'm going to do it here, Ruiz UD.

I don't see how Toney could lose this fight. I think it will be a one sided decision in Toney's favor. Here's what Toney had to say about certain heavyweights and what he would do to them:

JayBee, as much as I hate to admit, Boxing needs a loud mouth like Toney. He makes you want to see him get knocked out.

I've always been a James "lights out" Toney fan. In a sport like boxing you really need the over the top male bravado.

This was actually a really good fight. Tony impressed me with his overhand right. He seemed to have a good gameplan. I was suprised that Ruiz didn't hug more, I thought that would be his key to victory, because I figured it would frustrate Toney into wearing himself out both from being leaned on and then punching himself out going for a KO. One thing I also noticed from the fight is that either Ruiz can really take a punch or Toney just can't hit hard enough to dominate the Heavyweight division. I think its a case of both, I don't see Toney getting many KO's against the top 10 HW's and if he doesn't get in better shape, his rise to glory will be short lived.

Im surprised noone mentioned the fact that Toney's trunks were showing "Plumber's Crack"
As Shaquille O'Neal left the Suns practice court, he yelled out, "Alvin's the coach. We must be the Clippers. And I must be Olowokandi. Nooooo!"

                        Re: Toney Vs Ruiz

Not a bad fight tonight. Toney's hand speed is incredible for how big he is. I don't think anyone in the division has quicker hands, except maybe Chris Byrd, but he throws a lot of little pitter patter shots, where as Toney brings the heavy leather.

I still cannot stand to watch John Ruiz fight, although I admit this was probably the most exciting fight I have seen him in. He landed some nice shots on Toney, especially to the body, but damn, the "throw one punch at the other fighter and then grab his head so he can't get off a return shot" just drives me nuts, and I am pretty sure he has been warned at least once in every fight of his I've seen about hitting the back of the head in the clinch.

What I really can't believe, though, is that there was no drama at all this time with Ruiz's trainer, Norman Stone (who I would love to see get socked in the jaw). Other than him bitching right before the fight about Toney having too many people in the ring with him, he was actually well behaved for once. I hardly heard him cuss in the corner between rounds, either. Usually, he lets 'em fly so often that it would make Al Swearengen blush.

I thought Toney would have dominated more, but keep in mind he only had a little more than a month to train. If he gets around 215 for a Klitschko bout it could be interesting.

                            Re: Toney Vs Ruiz

The fight was a letdown IMHO. I don't know how much Toney's prefight injury from training slowed him down, but the bout was disappointing. A healthy Toney should've dominated Ruiz but he didn't. I had it 7-5 Toney. I thought Ruiz had his best fight entertainment wise by keeping his distance and not clutching so much. I felt Toney outboxed him but I was glad to see Ruiz' different approach.

The heavyweight division is horrible. Lampley (although I hate him) made a great point before the fight about American boxers. He said that most American athletes who are 6'4 and above are either in the NBA or NFL. There's just not that draw to boxing. And Mercer (who I despise even more) noted that the lower weight classes put on better fights.

I think Vitali will lay Toney out on his back if they ever meet. His reach would be too much for Toney. He'd just keep tagging him from the outside. I do have a feeling that Rahman can test Vitali's chin though. I think he might have a glass jaw.

We'll see, but Winky/Trinidad will be much, much, much more exciting than that sorry fight last night. I think Winky's gonna kill Tito and put him back into retirement.

Couldn't agree more, the heavyweight division is at an all time low. This was a horrible fight with 2 of the most sloppy, unskilled fighters I have ever seen only made tolerable by the fact that I expected worse. These guys didn't show an ounce of defense or strategy and couldn't jab to save their life nor are they sluggers which would give them an excuse for not being able to jab themselves out of a paper bag. They simply plodded around the ring leaning in against each other with thier hands down knowing that neither one of them can punch hard enough to hurt the other. It's the only time I ever thought that if I got myself up to 220lbs that I would give them a good fight.

25 years back these guys would of been the Scott Ledoux or Randall "Tex" Cobb of boxers. Simply punching bags for talented heavyweights trying to kill time between lucrative fights by getting in some sparring time against stiffs like these. Could you imagine how silly these 2 clowns would of looked against Ali, Holmes, Frazier, early Tyson or Holyfield. The sad fact that one of them actually holds a belt shows that the only criteria for heavyweights these days is size and not much else. Klitscko is the best of the worst with lousy handspeed and always fights like he's afraid to get hit much like his brother.

If one young guy can come up who knows how to technically throw a punch and box and has average hand speed he'll eat this division up for years to come similar to how easy it was for Tyson to dominate back in the mid 80's, the last time the division was full of stiffs and a guy like Trever Berbick was the champ.

I refuse to watch heavyweight fights now and I only watched this one because of a ghoulish desire to see how bad it would be and they didn't disappoint.
