Your original post stated many boxing games didn't have real boxers as cover athletes. Considering EA titles have comprised most of the boxing games of the last 15+ years, that's false.

Sure, there were cartoonish, arcade boxing games without real athletes on the cover. But just about every console sim attempt at the sport has featured a real fighter on the cover.

As for Punch-Out, ask nearly all longtime gamers who aren't boxing fanatics to name their favorite boxing game, and Mike Tyson's Punch-Out tops many lists. Glass Joe! Bald Bull!

American versions

De La Hoya was on the first one in 98

Ali was the cover in 2000 and 2002

Two athletes shared the cover in 2001

And Lennox in 2003

2 out of the 3 years there was a featured cover athlete. That’s about 5-6 overall if you also include the American fight night games.

I also didn’t say it didn’t happen, but it didn’t matter...

People weren’t buying those games because De La Hoya or Lennox Lewis was on the cover, if anything they wanted to play with Ali...

So then why does EA Sports continue to place NFL players on the Madden cover? Why doesn't EA continue to put Madden on the cover, as it did for a long time in that franchise?

This is a loaded question because the "hardcore" football fans are very vocal about how authentic they want their game including the want for real athletes representation.

I know for a fact when I was EA Community Leader for Fight Night Round 4 they never really focused on the true boxing fans when making their boxing videogames.

It's not loaded at all.

EA uses their cover athlete for Madden as a marketing tool because that's what the mass market wants. They can profit off of the exposure.

You simply can't get the same response to the degree they get from the NFL from either boxing or the mma.

That's because there's not enough of us -- especially in the U.S. -- to justify the expense of development and licensing, so EA needed to cast a wider net.

This is the EXACT point aholbert32 and I have tried to make all along in this discussion.

Fight Night Champion may be the ONLY EA Sports game of the last five years to feature a fictitious athlete on the cover. Every other EA Sports game has featured a real player.

Creed wasnt THAT popular. It was a successful movie but not enough to base a whole boxing game on imo.

The game would do fine if both Canelo and GGG were on the cover together especially if the game was pushed with the hype of the fight.

LOL.....Huh?

Mike Tyson's Punchout came out in 1987 and he was on the cover. That was before EA ever created a single sports game. Where the hell did you get that from?

Also you overestimating Canelo and GGG's popularity in the US if you think they can carry a game.
