Stoudamire Leaves Jacks
South Dakota State announced today that freshman center Quemont Stoudamire has decided to leave the team to pursue other basketball options. “We wish Quemont the best of luck in the future and hope that he finds a situation where he and his family are happy,” said Coach Bourbon in a written statement. “I would like to thank Coach Ray Bourbon, the South Dakota State athletic department and academic staff for their time and care for me here,” said Stoudamire in a statement of his own. “My time at this school has not been wasted and I wish all my teammates the best of luck.” Stoudamire did not see much action in the 2009/2010 season and was delegated to reserve towards the end of the campaign. Quemont averaged 2.9 points per game last season.” |

Re: Coaching Legacy of Ray Bourbon
A Step in the Right Direction
It’s easy to be disappointed with the first round exit in the Summit League Conference Tournament, however, all in all the Jacks and Head Coach Ray Bourbon are finally on the right track. After a 13-45 record in his first two seaons, Bourbon led his 2009/10 squad to their first .500 finish in their division I history, which is in nothing to be ashamed of. This campaign had its up and downs as the Jacks went 5-10 through the middle part of their season and flirted with once again being the bottom feeder of the Summit League. To Coach Bourbon’s credit, he was able to turn things around and rattle off a late January/early February five game win streak to bring the Jacks out of the basement and into contention. Gerry Karangwa dominated the court again this year and was rightfully named player of the year in the league. The Jacks have a gift in Karangwa, but sometimes lean on his 7’1” frame too much towards the end of games. With the departure of fellow center Felipe Werner to graduation, it will be interesting to see how the big man does with more responsibility on the court and less time to rest on the bench. As for Werner, he is a victim of playing with the best player in the Summit League. On any other squad, Werner would have had a shot at conference player of the year himself, but I am sure he wouldn’t have traded it for the world. The tandem of Werner and Krangawa was one that South Dakota State fans have never before and probably won’t again for a long time. Other senior departures include Kai Williams, Mark Engen and Brandon DeBoer. While a starter his whole career with the Jacks, Williams never truly found his place on the court for Bourbon. For Engen and DeBoer, both served their time in the Jacks uniform as great leaders both in practice and on the bench. Though neither saw much playing time, it was easy to see their impact on the younger players as the season dragged on. Quemont Stoudamire will also not be rejoining the Jacks next year as he has decided to look for a scholarship somewhere else. Stoudamire was part of Bourbon’s first recruiting class and used a redshirt last season, only to be delegated to bench duty and then reserve duty at the end of the year. It is rumored that reserve was the last straw, but in all honesty, only Quemont and his teammates know the reason for the departure. Even with the loss of a few key players, the future of South Dakota State basketball looks about as bright as it ever has in the past few years. With his 15-15 season, there is no reason why Ray Bourbon should not be back at the helm next November when the Jacks take back to the court. |

Bourbon Signs Three Year Extension
South Dakota State Athletic Director Justin Snell held a phone conference this morning announcing that Head Coach Ray Bourbon has signed a three year extension to be the head basketball coach of the Jacks. Financial details were not disclosed. “We feel that the significant strides taken by Ray Bourbon this past season show us that he can lead a team and that we want him to do just that here in Brookings,” said Snell. “We are excited to see where this program can go moving forward.” Bourbon lead his squad to a 15-15 record in the 09/10 season, amassing a 28-60 career record. |

Bourbon Lands JUCO Recruit
Ray Bourbon announced today that South Dakota State has signed James Ravello, a junior college small forward from Chicago. Ravello joins Gerry Karangwa and Felipe Werner who Bourbon recruited out of the JUCO ranks. “Landing James today was big for us,” said Bourbon about his recruit. “We are very excited to have him join us and I am very pleased that he was willing to come over and play for me and the Jacks.” Ravello attended Southwestern Illinois College last season and averaged 8.9 points per game. Ravello will enter his time as a Jack with sophomore standing. Jacks Receive Portland Transfer Jacks Coach Ray Bourbon announced today that senior Luke Sikma has transferred to South Dakota State after three years at the University of Portland. Sikma averaged 7.2 points per game while grabbing down an average of 6 rebounds in a starting role for the Pilots. Sikma will have to sit out the 2010/11 season due to NCAA transfer rules. |

Jacks Confident Going into 2010/11 Campaign
Brookings, SD - 8/20/2010 As the South Dakota State Jacks come back into Frost Arena for organized team practices, one word is on the tongue of everyone involved: winning. The new edition of the Jacks is attempting to build on a productive 15-15 season which ended in a first round conference tournament defeat. Coach Bourbon has a few new faces in his organization and with them comes a message that South Dakota State has not heard since they’ve been in division I athletics. “We expect to win this year,” said Bourbon. “I am not saying we’re going to go out there and run the conference and make the NCAA tournament, what I am saying is that we’re going to compete night in and night out and win games this year. “We have such a large group of leaders on this team, it’s something that I am so fortunate to work with,” said Bourbon of his large senior class of seven. Bourbon’s message is one that many didn’t think would come from the coach after his combined 13-45 in his first years at the helm in Brookings. The fourth year head coach acknowledges that he has not brought this program as far as he thought he would have at this point, but assures that he will not be going anywhere by choice until he gets this team to where he wants. “I feel very strongly about this job, I am very passionate about it,” said Bourbon. “I love the kids here, I love the school, I want to be successful here, and we will be.” The Jacks will have to win without one of their very important pieces the last two seasons, Felipe Werner. Werner graduated from South Dakota State last season after two very impressive years with the Jacks. Reigning Summit League Player of the Year Gerry Karangawa will have to do without the extra minutes he was able to sit out due to the strength of Werner at the center position. “I am going to miss Felipe a lot, both on and off the court,” said Karangawa who was also Werner’s roommate. “We have to keep looking forward though, we got a great new team.” That great new team includes two very talented new comers to the Jacks roster in forwards freshman Hrvoje Paschel and sophomore James Ravello. “I just want the season to start tomorrow,” admitted Ravello, a junior college recruit. “I’ve dreamed of playing division I ball, and I think this is going to be the right fit for me.” Also joining the Jacks is new assistant coach Maris Dahl who takes over for Hector McIntyre. McIntyre left the Jacks to pursue a career outside of basketball. Transfer Luke Sikma will also be practicing with the Jacks, but is forced to sit out a year due to NCAA rules. “We got a few new faces around here, and it’s refreshing,” said Bourbon. “The one thing is that we’re all a family, and I can already see the new guys here fitting in just fine.” Roster Projected Starting Five: SR – Guard - Michael Palarca – 5’1”, 182lbs, Sacramento, CA Palarca has been at the point for the past three seasons and has not disappointed. A great ball handler with good speed, Palarca will play a pivotal role for Bourbon this season. SR – Guard – Clint Sargent – 6’4”, 204lbs, Dubuque, IA Sargent was the 2007/08 conference rookie of the year, but has struggled to improve on his game since then. Sargent provides a great spark from deep and is the only true deep threat for the Jacks. SO – Forward – James Ravello – 6’6”, 194lbs, Chicago, IL Ravello joins the Jacks from junior college where he put up positive numbers and looks to continue that trend in Brookings. With a decent mid range game and incredible speed for his side, Ravello will look to take over for Kai Williams who was a solid rock for the Jacks in the past seasons. FR – Forward – Hrvoje Paschel – 6’9”, 246lbs, Laredo, TX A hard working kid with good size, Paschel has great inside presence with a good scoring touch and great rebounding skills. Paschel will look to compliment Karangawa as Felipe Werner’s replacement. SR - Center - Gerry Karangwa - 7'1", 250lbs, San Diego, CA Returning conference player of the year, Karangwa is a great all around big man who is the key to the Jacks success. Playing this year without Felipe Werner, Karangwa will be looked upon to log more important minutes on the floor the his previous years. Bench/Reserves SR – Forward – Josh Cassaday – 6’7”, 191lbs, Westminster, CO JR (RS) – Guard – Dale Moss – 6’5”, 206lbs, Rapid City, SD SR (RS) – Guard – Garrett Callahan – 6’1”, 189lbs, Chicago, IL SR (RS) – Forward – Anthony Cordova – 6’8”, 253lbs, Brookings, SD SO (RS) – Center – Warren Ward – 6’10”, 262lbs, Lubbock, TX SR (RS) – Forward – Thomas Bassett – 6’5”, 233lbs, Iowa City, IA SO (RS) – Guard – Carl Flores – 6’7”, 211lbs, Milwaukee, WI SO (RS) – Forward – Mark Little – 6’8”, 225lbs, Bolingbrook, IL Last edited by wake112; 11-26-2010 at 01:28 AM. |

Re: Coaching Legacy of Ray Bourbon
Seasoned Jacks Looking to get into Summit Groove
Brookings, SD - January 14, 2011 The same old Jacks have returned to the court in Brookings. After a promising two game new year swing, the Jacks have been dismantled at the hands of their last two Summit League opponents. However, at 2-4, Coach Ray Bourbon's squad is currently experiencing its fastest conference start since he took over the ranks four years ago. Last year, the Jacks went 3-7 before rattling off five wins in a row to lead them to a 9-9 league record, before being bounced in the first round of the conference tournament. This year, with eight seniors on his roster, Bourbon thinks that he has the squad to get him over the hump. "We have a great group of kids who are real motivated this year," said Bourbon, who is 35-70 in his career at South Dakota State. "I have never seen the kind of extra work put in by some of the kids this year, it will translate into wins." The hard work didn't pay off last night, as the Jacks fell hard, 88-63, at the University of Kansas City-Missouri. The Jacks also lost defending Summit League Player of the Year, senior Gerry Karangwa, who leads the conference in points-per-game (20.3) and rebounds (10.6). South Dakota has stated that the 7'1" center pulled his hamstring, and is expected to suit up and play limited minutes during the next week or two. The hole will be hard to fill, as Karangwa has helped the Jacks becoming the dominant rebounding team in the conference at 39.2 a game. Centenary is second with 32.1. Coach Bourbon will have to lean on senior guards Clint Sargent and Michael Palarca to provide the offense while Karangwa plays limited minutes. Sargent, who was the Freshman Player of the Year in Bourbon's first year, has hit his stride as of late, averaging 13.7 points-per-game, the highest numbers of his career. "I just feel confident again," Sargent commented. In the last two season, Clint has failed to live up to the expectations that were placed on him after his first season. "I am not forcing shots anymore, I am waiting for my looks and taking them." However, the Jacks still lack a third scoring threat, and coach Bourbon hopes that someone will step up soon. "I am really looking towards some of our first year players, [Hrvoje] Paschel and [James] Ravello, to make an impact here," said Bourbon. "They have played long enough with us to be confident enough to step up and make shots, now I want to see it." Overall, the Jacks sit at 7-10 and with 13 games remaining, Bourbon hopes to improve on last years 15-15 record, which was his best at the helm of the Jacks and earned him a contract extension. However, in a single bid conference, the Jacks need to focus on first making, and then being competitive in the conference tournament in March. The next few weeks should be interesting. ** This Legacy has been dead for awhile, but I always start it back up in NCAA season, so here it is... once again. |
