Chiefs Injury News

OLB Napoleon Harris is out 3 weeks with a strained hamstring.

MLB Anthony Allan will miss a week with a hernia

HB Larry Johnson has been cleared by Trainer Robert Wyman but remains a game time decision.

DE Glenn Dorsey has been cleared to play by Trainer Robert Wyman, but he's nicked up pretty bad, with is left arm and left leg at 50%...and that is with a week of cancelled practices to heal up.

DE Eric Baker is a go.

DE Mark Anders is a go.

MLB Deangelo Bost is having some problems with his legs, but wants to play.

Thanks, it was brutal...I don't have a lot of extra depth, so I was having to make some crazy substitutions to make sure the defense was adequately covered...LB is an area of particular weakness...so at one point I had Derrick Johnson at LOLB, DE Erik Baker at MLB, and FS Ike Scott at ROLB...then Baker went down..and I put CB Bulluck in at MLB. Needless to say, the OL was throwing blitzers around like little kids.

Re: NFL Head Coach 09 Dynasty

How Many Carries Is Too Many Carries?

QUESTION: With the recent injury to HB Larry Johnson, the question has to be asked, how many carries is too many carries? In 2008 Larry Johnson carried the ball 243 times for 1275yds and had 27 receptions for 491yds. That’s a total of 270 touches. So far in the 2009 season (14 games) he's carried the ball 457 times and caught another 39 balls. That's a total of 496 touches with two games still to play. These numbers exceed even his career high 2006 season (416/41- setting an NFL record for carries in a season.) The fact is HB Johnson is the team’s workhorse, and with QB Blake Strickland still getting a handle on the offense, likely will be for at least the next few years. Given that Johnson has already been dinged up a few times in his career and missed playing time due to those injuries, how important is it that this team find a true No. 2 to reduce his workload? There is no doubt that Johnson's physical style of play is taking its toll. What do you think would be the ideal number of touches for Johnson?

Here is what some prominent former coaches had to say when we asked them:

Coach Herm Edwards (former Chiefs HC)
Larry thrives on a lot of work, so I don’t think reducing his touches dramatically would sit well with him. That said, I’m sure the Chiefs would like to lessen his load a bit, maybe more like 325 touches. I think the Chiefs will be looking hard at running backs in the draft and in free agency. They need a dependable #2 behind Johnson and I don't think Jamaal Buckingham can be that guy. While I was there, we brought in Jamaal Charles, Coach Joslin should be using him to spell Johnson.

Coach Lane Kiffin (former Raiders HC)
Of course it is important to find a productive supporting cast member behind Johnson. But he will continue to be the workhorse of this offense and I want to see him get at least 25 touches a game. Even if the Chiefs had a great passing offense, and they don't, you can’t reduce Johnson’s workload because he is one of the rare talents in the NFL.

Coach Brian Billick (former Ravens HC)
Given the need to run, run and run some more with a rookie quarterback at the offensive helm, a strong No. 2 back is essential for this team. If the Chiefs could limit Johnson to 300 touches, imagine how much more effective he could be. He played hurt for much of 2007 and was dinged up last year. What if he played healthy for most of a year? How many more big plays would he break?

Coach Bill Parcells (former Giants, Patriots, Jets, and Cowboys HC)
A #2 guy is important, but I don't think you limit Johnson's carries. Let's face it with that kid they've got at QB, someone has to carry the load. Someone has to take the team on their shoulders. Who else is going to do it? That pansy Tony Gonzalez? I don't think so. So Larry only plays a few more seasons, would you rather play 10 losing seasons, or 5 seasons full of playoff appearances, pro bowls, MVP awards and Super Bowls?

2009 Stats (14 games played)

HB Larry Johnson (91/91) 30yrs old, 6'1", 228lbs, 6yrs pro, Penn State (his overall and potential dropped by 1 after his injury)

General: 14 games played, 13 games started, 939 downs played, 496 offensive touches, 0 missed assignments

Rushing: 457 carries, 2651yds, 5.8yds per carry average, 31 TDs, 8 fumbles, 56yd long, 202 broken tackles, 20 runs over 20yds

Receiving: 39 catches, 457yds, 11.7 avg, 244 YAC, 4 TDs, 8 drops, long 70yds

Currently the front runner for League MVP, Offensive Player of the Year, RB of the Year, and is almost guaranteed to be selected as AFC HB1 for the Pro Bowl

Re: NFL Head Coach 09 Dynasty

Week 16

Kansas City Chiefs @ Washington Redskins

The Chiefs may have locked up a playoff berth, but if they can't get healthy and cut down on the mistakes they won't go far.

The Redskins start with the ball and waste no time sending a message. QB Jason Campbell hits TE Fred Davis in stride and 58yds later, K Billy Cundiff adds the PAT.

The Chiefs look anything but prepared, when on their first play, QB Blake Strickland pitches the ball in the wrong direction, Redskins recover the fumble. Two plays later, TE Chris Cooley is celebrating in the endzone. Redskins lead by 14.

Both teams move the ball some, but the Redskins can't make the FG and Chiefs have to punt. On the Chiefs next possession they are moving the ball well, when QB Blake Strickland does what Kansas City fans know only too well. CB Fred Smoot is waiting for him, and intercepts the ball with ease, and goes 55yds to the endzone. Along the way, Smoot drove QB Strickland into the ground with a brutal stiff arm. Redskins 21 Chiefs 0

The Chiefs can't get anything going, and what's worse, HB Larry Johnson has to be helped off the field. Johnson is holding his ribs and is unlikely to return. A Jamaal Charles fumble gives the Redskins the ball.

QB Jason Campbell finds TE Fred Davis uncovered and 57yds later this one looks like it is over. Redskins 28 Chiefs 0.

Chiefs finally manage to do something right when WR Kevin Robinson breaks a tackle and goes 63yds for the TD. Coach Joslin calls for 2, and gets it. Redskins 28 Chiefs 8

The Redskins drive down the field in the last couple of minutes and kick a FG. It misses, but wait there's a flag. Encroachment on the Chiefs. This time Billy Cundiff squeeks it in form 43yds out. Redksins 31 Chiefs 8 at the half.

Chiefs get the ball back to start the 3rd. HB Jamaal Buckingham batters his way down the field and finally dives into the endzone. Buckingham takes the pitch and adds another 2. Redskins 31 Chiefs 16.

The Redskins move down the field in a handful of plays, but CB Brandon Flowers comes up big with a redzone interception. The ball goes back into the hands of HB Jamaal Buckingham who clobbers his way down the field. It definitely isn't pretty, but it is working. The Redskins finally stiffen, and the Chiefs are forced to turn to the shellshocked QB Blake Strickland. Strickland delivers with a 11yd TD pass to QR Isaiah Darcy. Then immediately falls back to his usual ways pitching the ball the wrong direction on the two point play. Redskins 31 Chiefs 22

The Redskins have decided to run the clock, and manage to take some time off the clock, but the Chiefs force a punt to get the ball back. Chiefs give it right back with a QB Blake Strickland interception.

Another stop by the defense and a missed FG gives the Chiefs the ball with around 4 minutes left in the game. HB Jamaal Buckingham manages a long run and with a little help from WR Kevin Robinson on some key 3rd downs the Chiefs make it into scoring range as time ticks away. HB Jamaal Buckingham drags defenders into the endzone with him, on a 3yd TD run. With the score now Redskins 31, Chiefs 28, Coach Joslin sends in K A. Serna for the PAT. He makes it and the Chiefs trail by 2.

2:47 remains, Coach Joslin calls for the onside kick. Redskins TE Chris Cooley recovers it. The Redskins drive the ball down to the 26yd line, but can't go any further. Coach Clancy Pendergast sends out K Billy Cundiff to tack on a FG. Cundiff pushes it too far right. No good. 2:08 remaining in the game.

Knowing how shaky QB Strickland is, Coach Joslin decides to run the ball. HB Jamaal Buckingham manages some decent runs, but it becomes apparent that the Chiefs need QB Strickland to get into scoring range in time. WR Kevin Robinson does his part, proving to be a reliable target for the rookie QB. The Chiefs make it into the redzone, when they hit a brick wall. 3rd and 17 from the 25yd line. WR Kevin Robinson gives them a little help with a 8yd catch, but it isn't enough for the 1st down. 23 seconds on the clock, and Coach Joslin sends out K Alexis Serna (the $1.5M FA bust...with a 47% FG accuracy on the season.) Serna kicks as the clock ticks down to 0 and it's good. Redskins 31 Chiefs 32.

Chiefs comeback for the win!

Re: NFL Head Coach 09 Dynasty

MLB Donnie Edwards finally agreed to a 2yr deal with the Chiefs, the deal is said to be worth $5.24M, with a $1.75M signing bonus and incentives for 10 sacks and 100 tackles.

Shortly after signing the deal, Edwards told ESPN reporter Adam Schefter he was considering retiring.

Re: NFL Head Coach 09 Dynasty

Week 17

New York Giants host Kansas City Chiefs

Coach Joslin has let it be known that he will not be resting his starters for this one. The Chiefs have already locked up home field advantage and a first round bye, so they could rest the first string. Coach Joslin had this to say, "We're a young team. We need every opportunity to develop, and games are the best opportunity there is. We'll be smart, but we're treating this like any other game. Besides, fans pay good money for those seats. They want to see the guys they cheer on every Sunday from their armchair, not some guy they barely knew was on the team."

The Chiefs start off flat, with QB Blake Strickland throwing an INT in the redzone to kill a promising drive.

Chiefs make it into the red zone first on a 12yd pass from QB Blake Strickland to HB Larry Johnson. K A. Serna adds the PAT.

QB Eli Manning and the Giants respond by passing their way down the field then sending HB Brandon Jacobs offtackle 9yds for the TD. K L. Tynes evens it up at 7-7. Both defenses come up big, preventing anymore scoring in the first half.

QB E. Manning gets his team into FG range and that's what they settle for after Eli is sacked by bothe DE Mark Anderson and DT Tank Tyler. K L. Tynes boots in a 44yd FG with ease. Giants lead by 3.

The Chiefs can't seem to find their rhythm until the 4th quarter, then they really turn it on. To start, HB Larry Johnson has a 7yd TD run. Serna kicks to give the Chiefs a 4pt lead.

Manning gets picked off, and the Chiefs get into the endzone but have to settle for a K A. Serna 23yd FG. Chiefs lead by 7.

Another Manning pick, followed by a 25yd pass from QB Blake Strickland to WR Kevin Robinson extends the Chiefs lead to 14.

The Giants can't get anything going and fail to convert on 4th and short. The Chiefs take over and run the clock. With 10 seconds remaining in the game, Coach Joslin lets K A. Serna add another FG. Chiefs 27 Giants 10.

Chiefs win!
