Re: The Coaching Career of Gus Malzahn (NFL HC 09)

Coach Malzahn, GM Potts and Owner DeBartolo waste no time in upgrading the team as soon as Trading/Free Agency begins.

The Chiefs lost CB Chris Gamble, due to his high salary demands. So the Chiefs make a deal with San Francisco. The 49ers get HB Justin Fargas, a 2010 1st round pick and a 5th round pick in 2010 for CB Nate Clements. Clements is expected to compete for a starting spot and will be used extensively in the Nickel and Dime formations as well as a backup FS and SS.

With the loss of HB Justin Fargas and the numerous health issues the Chiefs faced at HB last year, Coach Malzahn decided to get another heavy hitter at running back. OC Jim Caldwell was instrumental in getting a deal done with the Colts for HB Joseph Addai. The Chiefs send 2 2nd rounders in 2010 for the Pro Bowl HB. Addai is expected to share carries with Johnson and be used a lot on 3rd downs.

One other concern for the Chiefs was LB. Coach Malzahn felt that they needed more depth behind starters Keith Rivers, Patrick Willis and Derrick Johnson. To this end they sent a 2nd in 2009 and a 4th in 2010 for MLB Jon Beason. Beason is seen as an upgrade over Beau Bell who backed up Willis at MLB last year.

The Chiefs would like to trade RE Alex Brown and DT Tank Tyler, but so far haven't found any takers.

The Chiefs have only a single draft pick in this year's draft, a 6th rounder (#166) that they got from the Bears in the QB Ken Dorsey trade last year.

NFL Free Agency News

Some of the big Free Agency signings were:

The Bengals look to improve their pass rush by pairing DE Julius Peppers (4yr $31M $9M bonus) with Justin Smith already on the roster.

The Broncos looking for a playmaker at WR grab New Orleans WR Marques Colston and sign him to a 5yr deal for $30M with a $5M bonus. They improve the other side of the ball with former Patriot MLB Tedy Burschi (2yr deal, $11.5M, $3.5M bonus, $1M incentives for starting 16 games and 50 tackles)

The Buccaneers bring in MLB Ray Lewis giving the former Raven a 2yr deal for $16M with a $5.5M bonus with $250K incentives for 100 tackles and 10 sacks

The Cardinals take a chance on 32yr old DE Jevon Kearse with a 1yr deal worth $4.9M with a $500K bonus

Dolphins sign RT Jon Runyan to compliment last years 1st round draft pick, LT Jake Long. Runyan gets a 2yr deal worth $12M with a $3.5M bonus. He also gets a $750K incentive is he starts all 16 games.

On the other side of the ball Miami adds DT Pat Williams formerly of the Vikings. Williams gets a 2yr deal worth $11M with a $3.5M bonus. He also has incentives for starting 16 games and 50 tackles worth $1M each.

The Falcons piss HB Michael Turner off even more. Turner was the Falcons big free agent last year, and he let many analysts know how unhappy he was with Atlanta's losing season. You can just imagine his reaction when the Falcons give a 5yr $46M deal with an $8M bonus to former Cowboy HB Marion Barber.

The Falcons also decided to gamble on 38yr old QB Kurt Warner with a 1yr deal for $8M with a $2.5M bonus and $500K incentives for 3000yds and 25 Passing TDs

The Jaguars improve their O Line with former Redskin RG Randy Thomas. Thomas gets a 2yr deal worth $12.5M with a $3.5M bonus and a $750K bonus for starting 16 games

The Panthers steal Colts C Jeff Saturday with a 2yr deal worth $13M with a $3.5M bonus and a $750K incentive for starting 16 games

The Ravens bring in former Giant DE Michael Strahan for 1yr for $6.2M with a $2.5M bonus

WR Isaac Bruce isn't ready to hang it up, and why should he if Coach Mike Holmgren wil give him a 1yr deal worth $5.2M and a $1M bonus

The Texans upgrade their secondary when they grab former Viking SS Darren Sharper for $4.8M with a $500K bonus for 1 year and former Raven FS Dawan Landry for a 4yr deal for $18M with a $2.5M bonus.

The Vikings look to improve their O Line with RT Fred Miller for a $2.1M deal with a $250K bonus for 1 year.

Re: The Coaching Career of Gus Malzahn (NFL HC 09)

Going to clean up my playbook a little and them Sim the season and see how it goes. I'm thinking of moving from actively coaching to being more of a GM for this one.
