Game Notes

The Bills are tied with Miami for first place. In our first meeting we dominated time of possession and the first half. A sloppy third quarter made it a close game, Buffalo really struggled running the ball (3 total yards) and converting third downs (1-7).

It is a big game for us. A win and a Dolphins loss to the Panthers would create a 3 way time for first place. We’ll focus on what we can control.

Owens is back from injury and will play.

Buffalo will be missing Bruce Smith out with a broken Fibula, Joe Tafoya will start in his place.

Jets win the toss

Buffalo is looking a lot better on 3rd down, but we were able to stop them in red zone.

Stephen Hill is starting to come on, I feel bad because he had a monster game in the first SD matchup that was wiped out.

Revis makes a big pick off playaction returned to BUF 13.

Sweetney takes pitch right into the end zone.

Rambis makes poor decision in Shotgun against Bill Blitz. Sweetney was running a wheel pattern and his backer came in, would have been a TD. Instead Stevie Brown jumped in front of Stephen Hill and took interception 57 yards for a Buffalo TD.

Devin Hester magic, 57 yard punt return to BUF 28.

Rambis blows it throwing an INT over the middle, this time Manny Lawson showing surprisingly good hands.

Spiller fumbles after 10 yard gain on curl pattern. Landry recovers.

Rambis throws his 3rd INT on a curl route, really inaccurate pass despite no pressure.

Our red zone defense has been amazing this year. Buffalo stopped at 12. Hopkins makes 29 yard field goal.

Rambis throws his 4th pick, terrible game for him.

Thomas breaks a Harris tackle attempt and takes it in from 14, Kelly to Reed on hitch for 2.

4th and inches from BUF 24 and they break through the line and tackle Sweetney for a loss. With 7:55 remaining the game is all but over.

Thomas fumbles, Wilkerson recovers. Back in the game.

Sweetney punches it in from 6.

Buffalo punts with 4:34 left. Jets ball down 7 at own 32.

Rambis, ice in his veins, 4th and 12 from the 19 fade to Hill who makes a spectacular grab for the TD. Game tied with 1:57 left.

Kelly is hitting his spots, Reed catches pass at NYJ 18 with:48 left.

Hopkins attempts from 36 yards goes through the uprights as time expires. Bills win.

Game Notes

Last year the Titans finished 11-5 including a 48-24 victory over us. The Titans lost in the Wildcard Round of the playoffs to Oakland. This year they are 6-4, 2 games behind Indy, but on pace to earn a wildcard spot again. Wins against: NE, STL, BUF, JAC, HOU, SEA Losses: IND, HOU, SF, MIA.

Tennessee hired Gunther Cunningham as their DC but didn’t make any other major coaching changes. In the first round they selected LOLB Latroy Jackson. Jackson is a great athlete but lacks the instincts to be a good backer and the strength to be a great pass rusher. The only other major change was inserting Eddie George into the starting lineup over Chris Johnson.

Jets win the toss.

Verner slips behind TE running out pattern to pick McNair takes it 14 yards for a TD.

4th and goal from the 6 I get the defining moment. I call sweep right. Worst case is the Titans are pinned back. We aren’t going to the playoffs, well likely, so why not try to win. Sweetney slips the corners tackle and is in. My approval jumps to 53. The Bills loss really dumped my rating, I’m actually worried about staying on.

McNair throws into triple coverage, Rhodes steps in for INT.

PA pass from TEN 7 to Jolly for TD. Up 21.

Everything is clicking, our D stopped Tennesse again. Sweetney caps off 80 yard drive with 1 yard score.

Titans go 3 and out, Rambis looked unstoppable 4-4 for 63 yards and a TD in last minute, up 35 going into the locker room.

Eddie George gets injured on 1st drive of 3rd quarter and is out for the game.

I called all unlearned plays and the Titans were able to drive down the field.

Sweetney is a beast, runs it in from 4.

McNair finally lookd good completing 2 big passes to Britt. Washington scores the TD from 6.

I did not expect this, our D dominated, Rambis looked like an All Pro and Sweetney looked like an MVP candidate. At 6-5 we have an outside chance at making it to the playoffs, with a game against Indy next week and NE to close the season.

Game Notes

The Colts lost in the Super Bowl to the Rams 24-21 last year. They didn’t make any significant changes to their coaching staff, but upgraded their secondary signing Antoine Winfield. The Colts drafted Braylon Bowe-Drew with the #31 pick in the draft. Bowe-Drew is the CB who battles Devin Hester Clone Thomas Dwyer in the 40 yard dash. He isn’t a good fit for Indy’s system, but should be able to make some plays returning kicks.

Indy is 3 games ahead of the Titans in the AFC South and tied with Buffalo for home field throughout the playoffs. The Colts might be the best team in the game due to their coaching staff and quarterback. Dungy and Manning are both the best at their respective positions. Manning has plenty of targets to throw to with Harrison, Wayne, James, and Clark. Wayne and Harrison may be the best receiving duo in the league. Indy could use a small upgrade on the O Line though.

Defensively the Colts are very disciplined running a Tampa 2 system. Freeney and Mathis create pressure of the edges and Ernie Sims has developed into a great system MLB. Winfield, Davis, Bethea, and Sanders give Indy a great secondary. Each player would be great in any other system, but is best when playing the Cover 2.

This is going to be a tough game. The last time we faced an elite coaching staff the Patriots blew us out.

Jets win the toss

Manning finds Walter in space. Walter picks up excellent down field blocking and scores from 48.

Folk makes 31 yard FG after drive stalls.

Tamme fumbles pass over the middle at NYJ 8. Richardson recovers.

Rambis is starting to heat up, sneaks a post pattern above the MLB and in between the safties to Hill for 27 yard TD.

Despite 3 sacks on the drive Manning is able to get colts in position to kick a field goal. Good thing Hanson missed it.

Rambis hits 3rd consecutive pass in 2 minute drill totaling 55 yards, but Owens fumbles at IND 20.

Indy would kill in this game if WRs dragged their feet on out patterns. I’ve played them for years and it happens at least 3 times a game where Peyton nails an out pattern but WRs cant stay in.

Peyton is even better in 2 minute drill and apparently we can’t tackle Walter. He scores on a 46 yard grab,

We were just trying to run out the clock, but a 30 yard run and 22 yard run with a facemask penalty put us in position to kick a FG before the half. Folk makes from 48.

Sheldon Richardson shows off his athletic talent dropping into a zone and making a leaping interception at NYJ 13.

Kevin Walter is killing us, LB blew assignment and left him wide open, scores from 69 out. His 3rd of the day.

4th and 6th form Indy 42 and I go for it. I don’t think 22 yards is going to matter too much against Peyton if I fail. It is too far for a FG and too short to punt. Pass deflected at the line.

Archuleta comes up with huge tackle for loss on 3rd and 1 from mid field.

Playaction pass on 2nd and 5 turns into a touchdown to David Johnson. I picked Johnson up as a blocking TE 6 weeks or so ago. It was such a minor signing I didn’t mention it. I got for the tie and 2 points. I call my money short yard play a goalline sweep right. Sweetney juked backwards instead of falling over CB at the line to score.

The teams trade 3 and outs, but Antwaan Barnes forces the return to fumble with a huge huge, Adalius Thomas scooped it up and ran in for 6. I go for 2 again, this time Sweetney goes forward.

Indy really needs interior line help. Our DT’s pass rush has been great up the middle and has stuffed their run game.

We force another 3 and out, first play Sweetney takes dive 24 yards to mid field. We could win this!
Owens drops what would have been a 25 yard completion on Fade.

Rambis has been on all game finding the right receiver rarely making poor passes, completes 20 yard pass to Floyd to IND 30 with 3:16 left. Up 6 if we can gain a first down on the ground and come away with at least a FG it will be a win.

Sweetney grabs first down on 3rd and 7 after the 2 minute warning and takes next play 16 for a game clinching TD, Jolly makes 1 handed grab off PA for the 2 PT.

A huge win for the franchise symbolizing the change from an also ran to a contender. I was worried we’d get blown out, but it was a close game most of the way. I wish Indy mixed up their Defensive playbook more often because the Cover 2 is easy to beat. Run with power up the middle and find the seams. If your QB is accurate it shouldn’t be a problem.

Rambis was sensational. 99.9 rating with 2 TDs and no INTs.

I am a little worried though that I might be approaching the point where the game isn’t as much of a challenge. I was very aggressive in the off-season and that usually isn’t my MO. I am a year ahead of my 3 year plan in terms of team talent and performance. It could just be the Colts had a bad game and I know the flaws of a cover 2 system. If it is a sign to come and I start knocking out elite teams with ease I’ll have to go back to the drawing board.

It used to take forever.

I set up a template in Word for Home and Away Games.

Now all i have to do is find and replace the players and update the stats.

It still takes more effort that I would like it to, but I would say the template saves me a good 10 minutes each time.

If you are interested I could post the template.

Yes, go ahead and post it. I don't know that I'll ever be able to do that in one of my dynasties, but I'd like to have the template just in case.

BTW, I gave your dynasty 4 stars just because of the matchup previews and game notes-they're that good.

As to how easy the games seem to be getting-you're going to see that when you have a HC with 5 in Performance. The HC teaches all the players, so if you have that high performance all the players are going to be good once they learn the playbook.

Game Notes

The Saints won the NFC South last year having the tie-breaker over Atlanta. They lost by 3 points in the Wild Card round of the playoffs to the eventual Champions St. Louis. This year NO is 6-6 and would need a ton of help to get in the playoffs. They’ve beat: ATL, CAR, DAL, CHI, NE, and MIA with losses to: NYG, BUF, ATL, TB(X2), SF. The Saints had a bad start to the season but are 5-1 over the past 6 games.

Drew Brees does not have the prototypical size or arm strength but he is an elite QB due to his accuracy. Head Coach Sean Peyton has built a system and surrounded him with talent enabling him to succeed. At RB Reggie Bush has big play ability and is a real threat catching passes out of the backfield. Jimmy Graham, Marques Colston, and Joe Horn give Brees 3 large targets to hit on shorter timing routes. Graham moved from TE and the 6’6” Miami alumni can be impossible to stop in the redzone. The Saints have an elite offensive line. Only the center is rated lower than 94. Willie Roaf is a mainstay at LT and eventual HOFer.

On defense the Saints rely on blitzing to create pressure. Cameron Jordan and Will Smith are big defensive ends with excellent balance. Bunkley and Ellis are stout against the run and have enough finesse moves to rush the passer. The linebacking crew is one of the weakest in the league with Jonathan Vilma the only player rated above 86. The Saints selected Renaldo Moon in the first round of the draft, but the rookie corner from Illinois is surprisingly stuck at #4 on the depth chart. The best player in the secondary is Kenny Vaccaro who might have the best cover skills of all strong safeties.

I just didn’t learn. 3 times the game froze on me in the 2nd half with a comfortable lead. What I guess is fun is all the games were different. Just proof that anything can happen in Head Coach.

I supersimmed, so no box score

Brees threw 3 picks in the game which wound up being the difference.

Saints scored in final 2 minutes to make it close.

Michael Floyd had a giant game again with 179 yards receiving. In the last game I was forced to super sim he also had a big game. I don’t know what the CPU does that I don’t but obvisouly Floyd can be successful.

We are 8-5 now with games against Jacksonville, Houston, and New England remaining.

We are tied for 4th place in the AFC with Miami. We currently hold the tie breaker with the Dolphins as we split the regular season matchups and have played one less game in conference with 1 less loss.

There are 3 teams behind us at 7-6. I like the odds of us making the playoffs especially with how well we’ve play over the past few games.

Thanks for the comment and rating on the notes, I really appreciate it. I have found that it really keeps me interested and engaged in my franchise. I've spent more time on 1.75 years than I normally would on about 3,4, even 5 years of a normal franchise.

As for the performance rating, I'm still not 100% convinced it is the issue. I set a minimum of 4 for all other HCs in the league to counter my 5. In the first season that was quite apparent with only 2 wins and several blowouts.

I feel my mistake was in the off-season.

My favorite show of all time is Breaking Bad and in it one of the characters, Mike, gives a speech about the difference between taking a half measure and a full one.

I took a full measure approach in the last off-season. I hired Childress and Hammermill as coordinators. They were the best possible coaches for that position and significant upgrades over my previous staff.

I added the best players on offense and defense through FA with TO and Adalius Thomas. Finally, I drafted the 2 best players in the draft, and perhaps the entire path with Rambis and Sweetney.

4 all pros + 2 elite coordinators had a greater effect than I expected given the talent of coaches and players in the initial roster. I'm planning on remedying the situation at the end of the year.

I'll get rid of TO, Childress, and Hammermill and then let Thomas walk after next season.

My hope is with these changes years 3 and 4 will be average to above average teams with year 5 being the true leap to a contender.
