Once again the Lions and the Bears duked it out as they have so many times over the years. This time it was in the Bears home at Soldier Field, and the rain was coming down in sheets. So much for "establishing the passing game."

The story here was Shaun Alexander, churning away with 4 and 5 yard carries all day. He never seemed to get tired, which was good as Griese was only able to hit on a few passes in the monsoon, and threw three interceptions. (However there was an inordinate amount of passes clanging off hands.)

The weather also hindered the Bears passing game, as Sorgi also threw three interceptions and seemed to be unable to connect with any consistency, although the Bears rookie receiver Harry Douglas had three catches for 80 yards. One of them was a 50 yarder that almost went for 80 and a score if Dominique Cromartie didn't make a shoelace tackle. The Bears run game seemed to have some success, with TJ and Cedric combining for 26 carries of their own.

With the win, the Lions move to 5-3; and the Bears fall to 1-7. You have to wonder if Lovie Smith will still be coaching the Bears next year, or even next week!

TOM BRADY PASSES YA TITTLE AND TERRY BRADSHAW FOR 20TH PLACE ALL-TIME IN TOUCHDOWN PASSES. HE HAS 214, TIED WITH JOHN BRODIE.

DETROIT VS JACKSONVILLE PREVIEW

Detroit and Jacksonville are two teams in vastly different situations, despite the apparent similarities. Both teams have cat mascots, and both teams are 5-3. The difference is that Detroit's 5-3 record is good enough for first place in the NFC North, while Jacksonville's 5-3 record has them in LAST place in the AFC South!

Jaguars quarterback David Garrard is in a contract year, and has been performing well, though the Jaguars have a back up plan in former 1st overall pick David Carr on the roster should Garrard not re-sign.

Maurice Jones-Drew has taken over as the lead back ahead of possible Hall of Famer Fred Taylor, who's career is winding down. Free agent acquisition DJ Hackett is the starting wideout alongside Reggie Williams, while Matt Jones and Mike Walker are the 3rd and 4th wideouts. Former Vikings first round bust Troy Williamson, brought over in a trade this offseason, seems unable to get his career turned around so far, and is the 5th string wideout.

Pro Bowl fullback Greg Jones is out, so reserve H-Back tight end Kris Wilson is filling in, although there is another fullback on the roster should they need him. Starting tight end Mark Bruener is out, and with both Marcedes Lewis and George Wrighster traded away, Rich Angulo is the lone tight end remaining. (alongside H-Back Kris Wilson, who will be performing fullback duties when needed.)

Monstrous defensive tackle John Henderson returns and teams up with rookie phenom Ahtyba Rubin to make an iron-clad defensive middle. Josh Thomas and Darren Howard man the end positions.

Two key starting defensive players are out for the Jaguars: rookie OLB Jerod Mayo and CB Rashean Mathis. The loss of Mathis severely damages a relatively weak defensive secondary. Brian Williams is the starting corner, and rookies Jon Wilhite and Antwuan Molden will fill the second and nickel corner positions. If there was ever a week to test a secondary for Brian Griese, this is it.

QUICK HITS

QB coach Steve Lindsey has taken QB Physical Development 3, his rating is now 11.

DL coach Joe Cullen has taken DL line Physical Development 3, his rating is now 23.

Coach Billick's approval is now 51.

ALMOST GAME TIME IN DETROIT!! ARE YOU READY?

Re: The Detroit Lions

Lions-Jags.jpg

LIONS FALL HARD VS. JAGUARS

Looking to charge into the second half of the season "guns a blazin", the Lions were instead treated to a home-turf beat down at the hands of the Jacksonville Jaguars, 37-17.

The Jaguars run defense was especially dominant, save for one long Shaun Alexander touchdown; and the pass rush was constantly disrupting quarterback Brian Griese's timing. By the time the Lions were able to get something going, the game was pretty much over - and when a failed onside kick turned into a "nail in the coffin" touchdown by Fred Taylor, everyone knew the game was over...

Also, in the second quarter, wide receiver Bryant Johnson was knocked out of the game with a right leg injury, hopefully this isn't a lasting injury.

Re: The Detroit Lions

bjohnson-biocard-10.jpg

Breaking News:

Wide Receiver Bryant Johnson suffered a high-ankle sprain in last Sunday's loss to the Jaguars and will miss 4-6 weeks with the injury.

In addition, after a game on the roster that saw him pick up 4 tackles (1 for loss) in limited playing time, DE Lance Johnstone told Coach Billick he's done with football. "I'm just not myself anymore." he stated, adding "I had a great run, and I thank you and my teammates for giving me this opportunity; but I think I need to be home with my family, maybe look into coaching some day."

DT Sam Adams also told Coach Billick of his desire to be released, stating that he wanted a little more action since he, like Johnstone, is 35 years old and has been thinking about packing it in. "Bring in some young kid to develop, let me ride out my last few games in the NFL where they need me a little more."

Both men left on great terms and they will be missed.

(update: DT Sam Adams has signed with the Baltimore Ravens, where he will be the #2 DT behind Kelly Gregg. He got his wish...)

In corresponding moves, WR Peerless Price was signed and could start this weekend for the ailing Bryant Johnson. Coach Billick, in a statement to the media, expressed his desire to bring in a veteran receiver to fill the void created by Johnson's injury so there would be no disruption among the other receivers and their roles. As to why he didn't bring back Travis Taylor, a former draft pick of Billick who was on the Lions for a time this season, Coach Billick said, "We just couldn't make it happen. Travis is hoping for a full-time gig, whereas Peerless understands he's holding the spot for Bryant."

(Both Peerless and Travis are 30 years old, and definitely are hoping for one more NFL contract...)

Lastly, DE Dave Ball was signed to take the spot of Lance Johnstone. He's been a decent lineman and should fit in the rotation well. This will be his 4th team in 5 years, having spent a season in San Diego, two in New York with the Jets, and last season with the Panthers. He's got his work cut out for him, but he seems ready try to prove to one more team he belongs in the NFL. We'll see.

Marvin Harrison has passed Tim Brown for 3rd most receptions all-time.

Tom Brady passed John Brodie for 20th most touchdown passes all-time

Edgerrin James passed Marshall Faulk and Jim Brown for 8th most rushing yards all time. He also passed Corey Dillon and Jim Taylor for 15th most rushing touchdowns all-time.

Ty Law passed Deion Sanders and moved into a tie for 19th most interceptions all time.

And lastly our "shout out" goes to punter Jeff Feagles, who extended his own record and passed the 1600 punt mark. He now has 1602, which is 201 more than the next person, Sean Landetta, who retired with 1401 punts! Insane!
