Breaking News:
Wide Receiver Bryant Johnson suffered a high-ankle sprain in last Sunday's loss to the Jaguars and will miss 4-6 weeks with the injury.
In addition, after a game on the roster that saw him pick up 4 tackles (1 for loss) in limited playing time, DE Lance Johnstone told Coach Billick he's done with football. "I'm just not myself anymore." he stated, adding "I had a great run, and I thank you and my teammates for giving me this opportunity; but I think I need to be home with my family, maybe look into coaching some day."
DT Sam Adams also told Coach Billick of his desire to be released, stating that he wanted a little more action since he, like Johnstone, is 35 years old and has been thinking about packing it in. "Bring in some young kid to develop, let me ride out my last few games in the NFL where they need me a little more."
Both men left on great terms and they will be missed.
(update: DT Sam Adams has signed with the Baltimore Ravens, where he will be the #2 DT behind Kelly Gregg. He got his wish...)
In corresponding moves, WR Peerless Price was signed and could start this weekend for the ailing Bryant Johnson. Coach Billick, in a statement to the media, expressed his desire to bring in a veteran receiver to fill the void created by Johnson's injury so there would be no disruption among the other receivers and their roles. As to why he didn't bring back Travis Taylor, a former draft pick of Billick who was on the Lions for a time this season, Coach Billick said, "We just couldn't make it happen. Travis is hoping for a full-time gig, whereas Peerless understands he's holding the spot for Bryant."
(Both Peerless and Travis are 30 years old, and definitely are hoping for one more NFL contract...)
Lastly, DE Dave Ball was signed to take the spot of Lance Johnstone. He's been a decent lineman and should fit in the rotation well. This will be his 4th team in 5 years, having spent a season in San Diego, two in New York with the Jets, and last season with the Panthers. He's got his work cut out for him, but he seems ready try to prove to one more team he belongs in the NFL. We'll see.
