 Tuesday, January 23rd, 2018 Since the retirement of head coach Bruce Arians a few weeks ago; the Arizona Cardinals front office and ownership have been in search of a new head man. Today the search has come to an end with the hiring of head coach Derek Bryant. Bryant, 40, has spent the last four seasons with the Ottawa Redblacks of the Canadian Football League. Bryant was also personally recommended by former Arizona Cardinals Coach Bruce Arians who crossed paths with Bryant during the Redblacks signing of former Cardinals' QB Ryan Lindley. Bryant got his first head coaching job when he was named the Redblacks first head coach in the history of the franchise in 2014. Bryant won his first game as a CFL head coach on July 17, 2014, when the Redblacks defeated the Toronto Argonauts, 18-17. Despite the initial momentum, Bryant's team finished their inaugural season at 2-16, which was the worst record in the CFL. Bryant's second season saw a vast improvement as the Redblacks went from 2-16 in their inaugural season to a 12-6 record, which included clinching the franchise's first-ever playoff berth. The Redblacks would also clinch a first-round bye and home-field advantage in the CFL East Division Finals. Under Bryant's tutelage, the Redblacks became the first Ottawa-based CFL team to have a winning record since 1979, along with being the first Ottawa-based CFL team to finish first in the East Division since 1978 and the first Ottawa-based team ever to finish with 12 regular season wins. Bryant won the Annis Stukus Trophy as the CFL's Coach of the Year on November 26, 2015. Bryant guided the Redblacks to the 103rd Grey Cup game, in which the team fell 26-20 to the Edmonton Eskimos. Bryant's third season saw the team regress to an 8-9-1 record but earned a dubious distinction of being the first division champion to win with a sub .500 record. Bryant guided the Redblacks franchise to their first Grey Cup championship, defeating the Calgary Stampeders 39-33 in overtime in the 104th Grey Cup. The victory was the first by an Ottawa franchise since the Ottawa Rough Riders won in 1976. Bryant's fourth season saw the team finish with an identical 8-9-1 record from the season before, which was good enough for second place in the East Division, behind the Toronto Argonauts. The Redblacks struggled with injuries and inconsistent play throughout the course of the season. Bryant's team lost to the Saskatchewan Roughriders, who crossed over to play the Redblacks in the East Division Semi-final. Bryant is from Louisiana and accepted a scholarship to play quarterback at Louisiana Tech University. Unfortunately for Bryant, he was never afforded the opportunity to start for the Bulldogs; backing up Tim Rattay is first three years(1997-99) and losing a quarterback battle to Luke McCown his senior year(2000). Both Rattay and McCown would finish in the top 25 in all-time collegiate passing yards and go on to NFL careers. Bryant took the opportunity as a backup to develop a foundation for coaching after playing football. In 2001, Bryant returned to Louisiana Tech as a graduate assistant. Following the 2003 season, Bryant was brought on by the Edmonton Eskimos; to serve as the team's special teams and wide receivers assistant coach, earning a Grey Cup ring in 2003. Bryant served in those capacities until 2004, when he was promoted to quarterbacks coach under new head coach Danny Maciocia. Campbell earned his second Grey Cup ring in 2005 and was promoted to offensive coordinator in 2006, staying on in that position until 2008. Shortly after Hall's hiring, Bryant left the Eskimos and was appointed the quarterbacks and special teams coordinator under new the Winnipeg Blue Bombers head coach Mike Kelly. The Bombers 2009 campaign was a disaster as the team finished the season at 7-11, and Kelly was fired in the off-season due to personal conduct issues. Bryant would resign from his post shortly after Kelly's dismissal. Following his departure from Winnipeg, Bryant returned to Alberta, but this time with the provincial rival Calgary Stampeders. Bryant served as the running backs coach, under John Hufnagel. Bryant resigned at the end of the 2010 season. Bryant then returned to the Edmonton Eskimos, for the 2011 season, to serve as the assistant head coach and special teams coordinator under new head coach Kavis Reed. Once again, his stint in Edmonton only last one year. Bryant then returned to the Calgary Stampeders, in 2012, to replace Chris Jones, who left the Stamps that off-season to accept a defensive coordinator role with the Toronto Argonauts. Under Bryant's tutelage, the Stamps recorded 63 sacks, en route to the league's best record for two consecutive seasons. The Stamps defense under Bryant were known for their aggressive style of play, leading the league in turnovers on downs and second in fewest points allowed. Bryant's work with the Stampeders led him to be considered as a prime candidate for various coaching vacancies around the league before inking with the upstart Ottawa Redblacks. While NFL teams recruiting coaches from our neighbors to the north is nothing new. Arizona fans will hope that Bryant's time with the Cardinals will be more reminiscent of Marv Levy of the Buffalo Bills, minus all the SuperBowl losses, and less like the tenure of former Chicago Bears coach Marc Trestman. Cardinals GM Steve Keim and Owner Bill Bidwill were both in attendance for Bryant's introduction to the media, summing up the day by saying " It's a great day for Cardinal Nation!"  Ken Dorsey Hired As OC Arizona Cardinals Head Coach Derek Bryant has confirmed the hiring of former Panthers QB Coach Ken Dorsey as OC. The move has some Cardinal fans on edge as Dorsey was just fired a few weeks ago on January 9th by Carolina. But that has not deterred coach Bryant from bringing in the former hurricane and 6 year NFL vet. Dorsey's experience with the Panthers and their spread offensive schemes will mesh well with Bryant's offensive strategy and Dorsey's experience in the CFL as a player will help Bryant's transition of playcalling from the CFL to the NFL. Dorsey has worked with quarterback Cam Newton in five of Newton's seven NFL seasons, helping him to historic numbers. Newton has compiled 184 total touchdowns and 25,338 combined passing and rushing yards in his career, the second-highest marks in NFL history through a player's first seven seasons. Newton is one of just three players in NFL history, along with Peyton Manning of the Indianapolis Colts from 1998-2003 and Andy Dalton of the Cincinnati Bengals from 2011-16, to have at least 3,000 passing yards in each of their first seven seasons. In 2016, Newton reached 20,000 career passing yards, becoming the fifth youngest quarterback in NFL history to achieve the milestone (27 years, 186 days). Under Dorsey's tutelage in 2015, Newton was named the NFL's Most Valuable Player and Offensive Player of the Year and led the Panthers to Super Bowl 50. He threw for a career-high 35 touchdowns, produced a career-high 99.4 quarterback rating and tallied 45 total touchdowns (35 passing, 10 rushing) to become the first player in NFL history with at least 30 passing touchdowns and 10 rushing touchdowns in a season. Newton engineered four game-winning drives, tied for the most in the NFL, and directed an offense that set team records with an NFL-leading 500 points and 59 touchdowns and gained a team-record 357 first downs. A Pro Bowl selection and first-team All-Pro, he was named NFC Offensive Player of the Week five times, tied with Tom Brady in 2007 for the most in a season in NFL history. In 2014, Dorsey helped Newton battle through an assortment of injuries and become the first player in NFL history to pass for more than 3,000 yards and rush for more than 500 yards in four consecutive seasons, passing for 3,127 yards and rushing for 539 yards. When injuries caused Newton to miss two games at Tampa Bay in September and versus Tampa Bay in December, Dorsey turned to backup Derek Anderson, his former teammate with the Cleveland Browns. Anderson won both starts, completing 66 percent of his passes for 507 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions to generate a 99.3 passer rating. Under Dorsey's guidance in 2013, Newton earned his second Pro Bowl selection and established a career high with a 61.7 completion percentage. Newton quarterbacked the Panthers to a 12-4 record, NFC South title and the team's first playoff appearance since 2008. He was at his best down the stretch, directing Carolina to an 11-1 record in the final 12 regular season games while posting a 92.6 passer rating and orchestrating four game-winning drives during that time. Dorsey took over as quarterbacks coach in 2013 following two seasons as a pro scout for Carolina from 2011-12. In this role, Dorsey advanced the Panthers' upcoming opponents each week and evaluated free agents and prospects on other NFL rosters. Prior to coming to Carolina, Dorsey served as an instructor at IMG Academy. He helped train NFL prospects before the 2011 NFL Draft, working with quarterbacks, running backs and wide receivers. Dorsey played six years in the NFL from 2003-08 after being selected in the seventh round by the San Francisco 49ers in 2003. He spent three seasons with the 49ers and then three with the Cleveland Browns, making 13 starts and completing 214-of-408 passes for 2,082 yards and eight touchdowns. Dorsey finished his pro career with the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League in 2010. PLAYING AND PERSONAL A standout at the University of Miami (Fla.) from 1999-2002, Dorsey is the winningest quarterback in school history with a 38-2 record as a starter and led the Hurricanes to the 2001 national championship. He was inducted into the University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame in May 2013. The two-time Heisman Trophy finalist (2001, 2002) set numerous school records and still ranks as the all-time leader with 9,565 passing yards and 86 touchdown passes, while his 668 completions and 1,153 pass attempts stand second. As a junior in 2001, Dorsey won the Maxwell Award - presented to the college football player of the year - when he passed for 2,652 yards and 23 touchdowns on 184-of-318 attempts to compile a passer rating of 146.1. He graduated with degrees in marketing and business management. |

Meet DeVone Claybrooks Arizona Cardinals Head Coach Derek Bryant and new Cardinals Defensive Coordinator DeVone Claybrooks meet with the media briefly today. Claybrooks is a very talented DC and is widely considered the best DC in the CFL. Claybrooks served as defensive line coach under then Defensive Coordinator Bryant in 2012 and 2013 for the Calgary Stampeders. Claybrooks brings a fast and physical mentality to the defense and is unafraid to blitz from every position and angle out of his 4-3 defense. He and coach Bryant hope to replicate their defensive dominance in the NFL. In Claybrooks’ first season as defensive coordinator, the Stamps surrendered 369 points, the lowest total in the CFL. Calgary also allowed a league-low 5.7 yards per play and 7.3 yards per pass to the opposition in 2016 and was second in turnovers forced (45) and opponents’ completion percentage (65.4). The Stamps defense produced five CFL all-stars in 2016 including defensive linemen Charleston Hughes and Micah Johnson and defensive backs Ciante Evans, Tommie Campbell and Jamar Wall. The Stamps defence was among the league leaders in a number of categories in 2015 including first in points allowed (16.1 per game), rushing touchdowns allowed (four), total touchdowns yielded (22) and average yards allowed per carry (4.6) and was in the top three in sacks, first downs allowed and offensive yards allowed. Defensive linemen Freddie Bishop III (11) and Charleston Hughes (10) both reached double digits in sacks. The 2014 season saw the Stamps defense tie for first in fewest rushing touchdowns allowed (10) and finish second in passing TDs allowed (20) and fewest points allowed (347). Defensive end Shawn Lemon — who was the team’s nominee for Most Outstanding Defensive Player — matched a league record in forced fumbles (eight) and finished in a second-place tie in the CFL with 13 sacks. The Stamps defense ranked second in the CFL with 43 takeaways and on three separate occasions, Calgary held the opposition to a single-digit point total. Claybrooks won his first Grey Cup in 2014. In 2013, Claybrooks oversaw a defensive line that finished first in the league in quarterback sacks and featured defensive ends Hughes and Cordarro Law, who finished first and third in the CFL in that category. Hughes was named a CFL all-star and was the West Division nominee for the CFL’s Most Outstanding Defensive Player award. In his first season as a coach in 2012, Claybrooks guided a Stamps D-line that overcame numerous injuries to finish tied for second in the league in quarterback sacks (43) and allowed an average of less than 100 rushing yards per game. Hughes ranked second in the CFL in sacks (11), tied for the league lead in forced fumbles (five) and earned spots on the CFL and CFLPA all-star teams. Claybrooks spent three seasons as a player with the Stamps and was a member of the Montreal Alouettes for two seasons prior to that. Over his five-year CFL career, Claybrooks played 75 regular-season games and recorded 161 tackles and 14 sacks and recovered two fumbles. In 2011, Claybrooks played 15 regular-season games and one playoff game for the Stamps. His coaching and leadership skills were evident throughout the season as Claybrooks regularly taught some of the team’s young defensive lineman about the game. Claybrooks started his professional football career by attending Green Bay Packers training camp in 2001 before signing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and then the Cleveland Browns. He played for Rhein in NFL Europe in 2002 before returning to Tampa Bay. Claybrooks was a member of the Buccaneers when they won the Super Bowl XXXVII. |

 MOLLY: Welcome back to First Take! Guy up next, Teddy Bridgewater has signed a 3 year 20.9 million dollar contract with the Arizona Cardinals. Max your take?  MAX: Well Molly, this year Teddy Bridgewater will make 5.86 million on the cap. So I love this. People forget how much potential Teddy had coming out and his first year. Many had Teddy ranked higher than Derek Carr. He completed 64.5% of his passes and was 28td-21int. Drew Brees, who most consider a first ballot hall of famer, completed around 57% and was 29td-31int through his first three seasons. Teddy has a ton of talent, now we don't know what he is now given the injury. But he is going to be around the 25th quarterback in terms of salary, so this is a win-win for the Cardinals. If he is a pro-bowl caliber QB then the Cardinals steal him for three years on this deal. If he's not the same then you have a slightly above average paid backup.  MOLLY: Steven?  Steven: Well, Molly I love Teddy he's my boy and he had tremendous talent coming out. But hearing the reports over the last few year; I think that Teddy may have just stolen 20 million from the Cardinals. I'm not sure if he can or will play. And if he does play, after setting out for two years I don't think he will be able to come back at any real starting level. But OC Ken Dorsey has worked with Cam Newton so maybe they have a plan for him and can do something with this. And that being said the draft is coming up there are a few guys in there and maybe this is a Mike Glennon type deal where they sign a QB and then draft a guy.   KAY: Welcome back to NFL Network, I'm Kay Adams. Today we are covering teams offseasons headed into the draft. Up next we send it out to the desert in Tempe, Arizona and to our man Ian Rapoport. Ian?  IAN: Hi Kay. Yes, I'm standing outside of Cardinals' headquarters where it has been a season of turnover. As you know the Cardinals started the offseason early with the retirement of Head Coach Bruce Arians and retirement of Carson Palmer and then the hiring of new Head coach Derek Bryant.' The Cardinals have made some moves and moved guys around on their own team. The first big move was t fill the hole at quarterback where the front office went all in for Teddy Bridgewater the former rising star QB sidelined for two seasons with a knee injury. Another addition was at OLB of Bruce Irvin. irvin and FS Obi Melifonwu were sent over from Oakland in exchange for veteran safety Antoine Bethea and RE Josh Mauro. Irvin has 13 sacks over the last season and the Cardinals ranked around 23rd in sacks last season. Other than those few moves it has been a relitively quite offseason in Arizona. They did sign Kicker Dan Bailey to a 5-year deal to replace Phil Dawson. But mostly went with older veteran stop-gap type players like; LB Paul Posluszny and CB Brent Grimes. The focus now goes to the draft where the Cardinals front office hopes to be active. They have shown a strong interest in the OL in the draft and will likely need multiple OLmen out of this class. That being said they have shown interest in guys like; LT Trey Barber, RG Howard Shepard, and LG Denetri Tolver. All looking to go high in the first two rounds. Another guy the Cardinals have been all over this scouting process is WR Keiwone Webber from Northern Iowa.Webber blew up the combine and many coaches had him as the highest graded there. He looks to go around the 3-5 rounds, but with his combine could sneak up draft boards. The Cardinals have a lot of holes and hopefully, the Cardinals can patch them before the start of the season.
