Re: Oregon Year One
The Terrence Whitehead era is over at Oregon.
The university announced his firing this morning, ending Whitehead's tenure with a 18-5 mark in 3 seasons.
“We appreciate all that Whitehead has done for us over the last 3 years – coming to Oregon in the midst of an NCAA case and bringing stability to our football program when we most needed it,’’ athletics director Bobby Anderson said. “Despite injuries, despite setbacks and hardships, Whitehead never made excuses. He focused his teams on overcoming adversity, and I deeply respect the way he persevered and led our program each day with integrity through some tough times. This was not an easy decision because of the deep affinity I have for Whitehead. It simply is time to take our football program in a new direction.”
Whitehead received a five-year contract extension in 2020, meaning he is owed $12 million through 2025 He will receive $3 million annually from the athletics department through 2025, with no state funds going toward his buyout.
Whitehead was an instant success at Oregon, leading the Ducks to a Pac 12 Division title in his first season despite the Ducks being ineligible for the postseason. That success continued, building to a breakout season in 2018 that saw Oregon finish the regular season 11-1and earn a trip to the Pac 12 championship game, where the Ducks came up just short in a narrow loss to USC.
With high hopes entering the 2019 season, the Ducks fell short of expectations, going 8-5 despite an offense that featured future NFL talent with quarterback Mitchell Anderson, receivers Mic Zwitzer and Mack Morse and running backs KJ Venner and James Lood.
