Where Are Our College Basketball Video Game Rumors?

Folks, it's March Madness, and the rumor mill remains nonexistent when it comes to college basketball...

As excited I am about College Football returning, I'd be a million times more excited for College Hoops 2k (EA Sports college basketball less so). But I feel like the interest in college basketball as a whole in much less than most other sprots for some reason (though it's my favorite by far). It feels like less and less people are paying attention until the tournament, which doesn't bode well for a video game return

I would buy the game just because I love creating all my friends on a small school. Not realistic having a team of undersized white guys in NBA 2k. That being said, my interest in the current sport is non existent. I can literally name 1 male college basketball player in the whole country in Bronny James. That’s it. I know more girl players than guys. This coming from a guy who was obsessed with the sport and March madness as a teen and young man. I know I am not the only one like this. The demand isn’t there these days

The only time I watch college is March Madness, it's a lot more different to the NBA. Lots of 24-25 year old guys and the top players are 2nd round to undrafted projected in the NBA draft. Drew Timme went from a top player in college to barely playing in the G League.

I'd buy an NCAA game if 2K made it, probably not for $70 though. I don't know if 2K would think the work of putting hundreds of arenas and thousands of players in would be worth it though.

You are right about this, as an Arkansas fan I start to lose interest after the 15th-20th game of the season. Why we have 12 non-con games and 18 conference games plus the conference tournaments before the ncaa tournament baffles me.

I dont think the demand for a college basketball game is that great but with college football coming back it potentially opens the door for a return.

Re: Where Are Our College Basketball Video Game Rumors?

I love college basketball and loved 2K's college hoops game. I'd buy a copy no questions asked if available, but the comments above me are unfortunately correct. Companies won't even consider games like college basketball anymore because everything has to be a mega-blockbuster.

That having been said, 2K already has all the old college stadiums modeled from their last game, and they could use the existing NBA2K code to just re-skin the game with college basketball teams. If they minimized the cost, I could see a path toward profitability. But probably not enough to make it worth their time.

If you asked me what defunct game series I wish they'd bring back, though, it's College Hoops 2K no questions asked.

If its rumours you want, someone is going to do a college basketball game crowd funded thru KickStarter. Instead of $600 and a free copy of the game, they will probably offer $6 and a free pair of controller thumbstick protectors, since college basketball video gaming isn't exactly lucrative.

Sorry ma'am, I don't make the rumours. I just think them up and write them down.

All 2K needs to do is just use the gameplay from the NBA series with some college specific add ons like momentum from CH2K8. Make the recruiting exactly like 2K8, the weekly show and all of that the same. Then make sure create a team matches the NBA series and customize conference is full of options and this can be a once every 5 year game. Roster creators will keep it up to date and 2K can nickel and dime people in MyTeam mode with college legends to make bank

Right, I don't see why this needs to be an every-year release. Couldn't there be a profitable model where they do a college hoops release every other year (or every 3 years or whatever), and sell the roster update/minor tweaks for $15 every in-between year? I assume that would drastically reduce costs and allow the 'long tail'/semi-subscription model that every publisher loves.

I think college sports can really work, they just have to leverage the pro games already made, and they probably don't need to be a yearly release. Can't we get some outside-the-box thinking here? I guess everything that isn't "GTA" or "Call of Duty" just isn't worth the time for these publishers at this point, though.

disagree with the first part of your statement about using NBA 2k gameplay. I think the reason why CH2k is beloved by so many is because the gameplay on the court reflected college basketball. NBA2k8 and CH2k8 stood on its own. They felt vastly different on the court.

ID be happy with updated graphics and player movement with the exact same features and coding from CH2k8. CH2k8 was/is so deep that I constantly see different things on the court. Not sure who coded this game but who ever did, needs to be part of the development team if they ever bring CH2k back.

2k should take a chance and release a new version of CH2k.
I also think the NCAA should want a developer to make a game. Usually its a star player or two in the college game that generates interest of fans, but now because so many players opt to go overseas or play 1 year, its up to the NCAA to generate interest through other means. Releasing a game may generate more interest in college basketball long term.

All of this sounds great and it’s definitely what they SHOULD do, but it’s the NCAA so they won’t. They’re not even doing it with NCAA Football and it’s guaranteed to make more money than any college basketball game.

My point was only to say, here’s an easy way to solve the money piece of developing it. CH2K8 and NBA2K8 are actually great examples of what I mean. Yes they felt very different but the gameplay was still the same base. Mostly the same controls, iso motion triggered by buttons, a lot of animations reused (specifically shooting and rebounding). They just tweaked the gameplay to feel different, playbooks were different things like that.

I'm still playing 2k8 college hoops. I'd buy a current gen college game. If they build it I'll buy it.

I don't play NBA or NFL. College only.
