The state of North Carolina will always hold a special place in my heart. I was born at Hickory Catawba Memorial Hospital almost three decades ago. I lived there for the first year of my life until my parents wised up and moved to the true heart of basketball America. Since that time, the state of North Carolina has produced seven national championships while the state of Kentucky has produced only three. The University of North Carolina has won three national titles, and have been to more Final Fours than I care to count. As a result, I feel it's time to reverse the curse that has come to be known as the Tar Heel invasion.
It's quite simple, actually. With all respect to Duke, the Evil Empire that's currently crumbling, the University of North Carolina Tar Heels, with King Roy at the helm, is slowly but surely taking over college basketball...and I don't like it one bit. Look around you, or at least take a trip to your local Wal Mart or mall. Chances are, you will be blindsided by a hideous baby blue Carolina T-shirt or hat within 10 minutes. Michael Jordan played there (and he reminds you about it in his commercials....why the NCAA allows this is beyond me), and of course every 6-6 high school 2-guard thinks they'll be the next MJ if they spend their college years at Chapel Hill (although the odds are more in favor of them becoming the next Joe Forte or Donald Williams). ESPN and CBS would like you to think that Dean Smith created the game of basketball and King Roy perfected it. I get nauseous when I look at the recent high school classes, how somehow one school can sign three guys who play the same position in one year, and then turn around and sign two more the next year. And then when it comes time to turn pro early, the star sophomore and juniors all stay put. What in the name of Matt Doherty is going on here?
I've come to three conclusions, none of which involve luck. One, the cash flow must be pretty good down there in UNC, wink wink. Two, the networks have turned UNC into the new age Duke (for reasons I'm unsure of; I enjoyed my time hating the Blue Devils). And three, I think we need to reverse this obvious curse, because quite frankly, I'm sick of this school, a team that is routinely praised for its offensive genius but is often overlooked for its (lack of) defense.
So I call on you, dear college basketball pundits, to please list your favorite reasons why you can't stand the University of North Carolina...I know mine: everytime time a reporter drools over Tyler Hansbrough, a kitten dies!!!
(I'm hoping we can have some fun with this)
