Why do so many players keep their gloves unstrapped?
I'm not sure why, but this has always bugged the hell out of me. I figured if it was for comfort, some company would have came up with a solution for it. So it seems like it's just trying to look cool. Am I just getting old?Tags: None -
Re: Why do so many players keep their gloves unstrapped?
I did the same thing and my last game was like 16 years ago. Just more comfortable with taped wrists for me. -
Re: Why do so many players keep their gloves unstrapped?
Yeah comfort sometimes the straps get a little annoying or too tight on your wrists, if they are your right size the straps won't matter in whether the gloves will conform to your hands.
During my HS playing time I kept them unstrapped most of the time on D, but oddly enough on Offense i'd strap them up just because in my mind I felt like it helped me catch the ball lolSaints, LSU, Seminoles, Pelicans, Marlins, LightningComment

I'd get my wrists taped and keep the gloves strapped... I really didn't need the gloves or tape to begin with either, it was all just psychological for me.Ohio State Buckeyes | Carolina Panthers | Charlotte Hornets | Cincinnati RedsComment

Reminds me of that coach from Coastal Carolina who thought his players cared too much on how they looked on the field instead of how they played.

Re: Why do so many players keep their gloves unstrapped?
Was just a comfort issue for me when I played, I've never really liked anything too tight around the wrist, only things I can wear like that are those bands, or, back in the day (this is dating myself, we did it before it became big, I think first star athlete I remember seeing doing it was KG), rubber bands.Comment

Re: Why do so many players keep their gloves unstrapped?
Like everyone else, comfort. There would be a little area where the velcro strap just constantly worked against my wrist during a game*years ago* and it wasn't pretty afterward. So I leave it unstrapped whenever I play sandlot now.PSN: TBD

Re: Why do so many players keep their gloves unstrapped?
The gloves I could understand for people who didn't tape wrists and the gloves didn't fit perfectly. I always had mine velcroed, but I at least understood why some didn't.
The helmet chin straps fad though is just beyond me. Yes, I'd like to make the one piece of equipment most responsible for keeping me out of the ER less safe...wth?Golf: Bubba

Re: Why do so many players keep their gloves unstrapped?
Never did it, but I did do a lot of other stuff just for style, like unnecessary armbands and hand towels; headbands around the neck. A lot of us did it. We wanted to be Prime Time. We weren't that good, but we looked pretty good in our eyes.
My gloves stayed strapped but if I did the unstrapped thing it probably would have just been for style too.PS: You guys are great.

Re: Why do so many players keep their gloves unstrapped?
In baseball we called it "flair". Guys wear accessories to look good. It seems to be much more acceptable in football, but we made fun of the guys who wore extra arm bands or had gloves in their back pockets along with batting gloves. I did wear high stirrups and 3/4 sleeves though, so I guess I can't talk much.Comment

Re: Why do so many players keep their gloves unstrapped?
Everybody I knew/played with strapped their up. But as a lineman I actually wore workout gloves that had the wrap-around strap. Didn't like the full-finger gloves because they were too puffy and couldn't find a half-finger glove that I liked, so I just used these

I'd rock the Nike Socks, bands underneath my knees(although a lot of game I rocked the Knee Brace besides the rare occasion I felt I didn't need it), Towel, Nike Gloves, Nike forearm sleeves, Nike 3/4 undershirt.Saints, LSU, Seminoles, Pelicans, Marlins, LightningComment
