Grade you team's first game performance

    South Carolina. C+
Got out of the gates quickly, but miscues let Vandy get confidence and hang around the rest of the game. Special teams and lack of WR production is going to costs us some games if not corrected.

Hard to be too critical about a SEC road win.

    B

Boyd loked pretty good, would have looked better if not for all the dropped passes by the WR's.

    Ellington was very good.

O-line was good, but was a little lacking at at times. Need to get better at punching it in the endzone.

WR's were average, with too many dropped passes, but also made some timely catches.

Defense is better, but no where it needs to be. Gave up too many big runs, and was lucky none were broken for a TD's by some timely shoestring tackles by the last guy to beat. We were also lucky that Fazier just didn't pass very well.

Happy for the win, but need the Defense to really improve. Offense needs to get a little more oiled up and functiong smooth.

        Purdue: B+
Large margin of victory and the team asserted itself like it should.

        Michigan: D-
Only reason there's no F is because there were some positives in pass defense. Got good pressure on McCarron for the most part.
        NFL: Indianapolis Colts (12-6)
        NBA: Indiana Pacers (42-13)
        MLB: Cincinnati Reds (0-0)

NCAA: Purdue Boilermakers (FB: 1-11, BB: 15-12), Michigan Wolverines (FB: 7-6, BB: 19-7, H: 15-10-3)

            LSU (W 41-14 UNT)
            QB- C+
            HB- A+
            OL- B-
            WR- A-
            DL- A-
            LB- B
            DB- B-

Pretty vanilla and lazy game. Hilliard/Blue along with the OL simply imposed their will whenever they wanted, however the pass pro needs a little improvement. I gave the DL an A- because later on in the game UNT was able to pound the middle, but I'm not putting a lot of stock into that. Same with the DB's Mingo...good lord. Speaking of Good Lord, the player I was highest on, Odell Beckham Jr, BALLED OUT. Let's just say Mathieu will NOT be missed on special teams after all. The rest of the WR's were fairly a non-factor, but you can pin that on the vanilla play calls, the same with the QB's (Mettenberger and Rivers). The biggest question mark (LBs) was addressed early in the game when Minter left due to injury and Debo Jones made a statment with his PT last night.

            Overall- B

            Oregon (W 57-34 Arky State)

            LOL...didn't you watch this one?
            QB- A++
            HB- A
            OL- B+

            DL- B
            LB- B-

              Duke- A+

A 20 point win over an FBS opponent? As Duke, you can't do much better.

              Lehigh- B

Colvin looked OK, not neary as good as Lum was. They got the W and on the end, that's all that matters.

                UF:

Offense: D+...it was pretty bad, but last year showed us it could have been worse.

Defense: A-...Solid unit this year, should keep any game close.

Overall: D-...Squeeking out a win in the 4th quarter against Bowling Green thanks to a timely missed tackle is completely unacceptable for the talent level of this roster. Only would have given an F if they lost.

                Miss State:

Offense: B-...rolled up a FCS school. Russell looked decent, but I saw at least two throws that would have been picked by SEC defenses. The running game looked solid and Perkins lost some fat and added some muscle. Still not sure Tyler has the mental makeup to be an SEC QB, but we'll see. With 4 SR wide receivers, no excuses.

Defense: B+...The first year starters actually played really well. The secondary played zone most of the game, which isn't their style and it left some HUGE holes in the defense. If it wasn't for 6 dropped passes this game could have been more competitive. Tackling was much improved in their first game this year vs first game last year, so things are looking good.

Overall: B+...Good confidence builder going into the Auburn game. Auburn had to play tough for 4 quarters vs a good team, MSU played a cupcake and was resting starters in the 3rd...advantage MSU. Sadly the game isn't on Thursday this year so Auburn will have the full amount of time to recover. I have MSU at 9 wins this year and as long as Russell can play under pressure the talent is there. Next week's game is a must win for the program going forward as a whole.

There's concerns with the passing game and the secondary, but they shut down the option and put pressure on the QB, not to mention establishing a great ground game.

                    Washington - C-

Just not a real good performance. Their defense saves them from getting a D. Offense was manhandled after the first quarter and the offensive line was abysmal, as was the running game.

If they don't find a way to block someone, Keith Price is going to be in for a rough, rough game next week at LSU.

                      Nebraska: A-

Defense looked shaky, but against an opponent who had an entirely new coaching staff, so no tape. That said, 3 points in the second half and only 260 yards overall, not bad.

Offense puts up a balanced 630 yards. Not much more can be said about that.

Offense: A+ I am not being cocky. We did face Marshall, but we looked amazing. Everyone knows about the passing game, our run game was very impressive as well as the line. We are definitely not one dimensional on offense.

Defense: C- We looked absolutely atrocious. I understand we are in the first year of the new defense with Coach DeForest and the 3-4, but the players looked clueless out there.

Final Grade: B+ I understand this does not balance out the C- defense grade, but our offense is just that good.

                          Georgia, B-

Questionable everywhere except for the run game, which is ironic because it was supposed to be the most questionable area.

Off: First half Murray was not on, maybe just 1st game jitters but he missed at least 3-4 passes that would have moved the chains or resulted in a TD, second half was better though. Todd Gurley was a beast which I personally expected, and Keith Marshall looked the part as well, a nice compliment to the power run game of Gurley and Ken Malcome. WRs were solid, Oline was shaky especially with Theus, Burnette, and Dantzler all going down with injuries. One positive note is that there were no turnovers.

Def: Terrible performance in the first half, looked slow and unmotivated. Dline was either getting pushed off the LOS or over pursuing. LB play was terrible besides Jarvis Jones, but after halftime adjustments it was a lot better with Christian Robinson playing ahead of Amarlo Herrera. Alec Ogletree's absence was very noticable. Secondary looked thin especially with 2-3 starters not playing, but I think it was good experience for the backups. Although the "real" defense wasn't out there, they still didn't look like a top 5 or even top 15 type defense, after halftime it looked better but they didn't force a turnover all game. Props to Buffalo for that.

ST: Already looks better than last year. Morgan looks like a solid kicker and same for the punter Barber.. Was glad to see a blocked punt and of course Gurley's 100yd kickoff return was amazing, and he apparently isn't even the best return man, true freshman CB Sheldon Dawson is our ace in the pocket, plus Keith Marshall and Malcolm Mitchell have also turned heads but I doubt the latter will get many returns considering he's injury prone.

Overall I give them a B- because of the sloppy, slow first half and just a decent 2nd half. This week's game at Mizzou will set the tempo for the entire season imo. Could be a huge boost of confidence and the beginning of a very special season or could be a haymaker blow that could cost someone his job (hopefully).

                            Syracuse:

Relative to other teams in the country: B+ for the offense, B for the defense, and an F- for the Special Teams

Relative to my own expectations of the team: A+ for the offense, A for the defense, F- for the Special Teams.

Despite what many of the students here say, Ryan Nassib looked great yesterday. The offense itself moved the ball extremely well. My only complaint offensively is probably that I wish Gulley had gotten more touches early on.

The defense did an excellent job keeping Northwestern in check until that final drive.

The punt coverage was absolutely pitiful. If not for the punt coverage, we probably would have beaten Northwestern by 2 or more possessions.

Offense: B- We had over 500 yards of offense but our redzone offense was pretty bad. Rocco made some good throws but he also had some innacurate throws. Sims looked really good for the one series he was in there for. We've got playmakers at the WR position this year. Our OL didn't really push Richmond around like I thought they would. We had a good performance but there is still a lot of room for improvement.

Defense: B+ Other than a few big plays our defense did really well. Our secondary showed its youth but I was impressed overall by our defense. We'll see how we do against Penn State next week.

Special Teams: A After an awful showing in the Chick-fil-A Bowl game, our ST bounced back with a great game. We didn't have any kicks blocked. We didn't miss any FGs. We didn't kick any kickoffs out of bounds. We didn't give up any big returns. We didn't have any real bonehead plays. It was a huge improvement from the last couple years. With that being said, there is still work to be done but I was very, very impressed with our ST yesterday.

Overall: C+ We started off great with an early 22-0 lead but we didn't look that good after that. I'm hoping we were holding back a bit. We've got to start fast and keep going. We started fast and let off yesterday. We're not going to be able to do that against Penn State next week. We've got to play hard for the full 60 minutes. We coasted through much of the 2nd quarter. That's going to work against better teams.
