An Example of how "Offensive" CFB has become.

In 2013, Auburn is averaging 440 ypg which ranks 49th in the nation.

That would rank 22nd in 2010 and 16th in 2004.

That's including clock rule changes, etc.

    My how times have changed.

Some say for the better, but I tend to disagree with that.

I'm not disagreeing with you but are those 2010 and 2004 stats based on after 3 games or at the end of the season? Because if your comparing stats from the end of the season to stats after a couple games it might change since a lot of stats right now are inflated due to teams playing FCS teams etc.

Teams were playing FCS teams, cupcakes in those seasons as well so I don't think it is that much different.

My point was are you comparing end of season stats to first 3 game stats? Because some of the current offensive stats will go down once we reach conference play (not drastically but I get your point about the change of the offense in CFB) It can be fun to watch but as a defensive guy sometimes annoying.

it definitely has gotten more offensive, but it probably wont look quite as extreme by the end of the year.

also i wonder how much of it is pace rather than vastly increased effectiveness. 2012 season 20+ teams had over a 1000 plays, in 2006 there were less than 10 over 900. teams overall probably are averaging more yards per play with the game being more wide open though.

The combination of the uptempo/spread offenses and rules limiting the way defenses can intimidate and play aggressively, this was bound to happen. It's happening in the NFL too.

These things usually run in cycles, but I don't know if defense will be coming back like it was 10-15 years ago

Probably not. Spread is making its way to developmental levels of football, and combine that with the "safety first" philosophy around the sport, kids just aren't learning how to tackle like they used to. On top of that, tackling isn't happening in practice as much, and the NFL's war on defenses trickling down to other levels pretty much assures that the sport's slowly crawling its way to being an outdoor AFL.
