How Does The 5 Second Call Work?

I'm a little confused on how the 5 second rule works in this game... I've always thought the 5 second rule in basketball is when you're guarding the man within 3 feet and he 1) Catches the ball and does not start dribbling for 5 seconds... or 2) He dribbles for 5 seconds... or 3) Stops dribbling and holds the ball for 5 seconds.

If the counting to 5 is interrupted on the first catching of the ball by the possessor dribbling the ball... counting is restarted, right? And if he stops dribbling, counting is restarted again, right?

Because in the game... it counts to 5, regardless of whether you break the counting cycle or not. Essentially, you should be able to hold the ball for a maximum of 12 seconds with a man in your face (4 when you first catch it, 4 when you're dribbling, 4 when you stop dribbling), but that doesn't seem to matter. It calls the 5 seconds violation with a man near you, no matter if you stop dribbling or start dribbling.

Am I wrong about this? I know this was true in HS... maybe I'm just off on the college rules.

It's basically broke in this game, they call it differently against you than they do against the CPU.

First thing I've done when I bought this game the last three years was turn off the 5-second rule.

Ya, it's been broke since at least last year. I remember it working as you stated in 2k3 though.

ok, if you actually look up the rule, it states that (for men) "A player in control in the front court only while holding or dribbling the ball is closely guarded when his opponent is in a guarding stance at a distance not exceeding 6 feet. This distance shall be measured from the forward foot or feet of the defender to the forward foot or feet of the opponent" (Article 1). Also, Article 3 (as article 2 in this section pertains to women) "After the start of a five-second closely guarded count, in order for a closley guarded violation to occur, there shall be continous guarding by the same opponent." and article 4 "When a player is positioned between the player in control of the ball and his or her opponent, who is within 6 feet (men) or 3 feet (women), a closely guarded situation does not exist." So, this is the actual rule from the NCAA rulebook...I think that, if you actually look at when you get the five second call, you'll see that, pretty much, the CPU calls it according to the rule, at least from what I've seen. It sounds like you guys are more or less trying to break a defender down, a-la the NBA, and are getting caught. Basically, if you try and drive and don't get past your man in about 2-3 moves, you either need to either bring the ball back out, or pass it off, otherwise, much like in real life, you will get a five count laid down on you...P.S....turn off Clutch Factor, turn off Clutch Factor, and, oh, did I mention to turn off Clutch Factor (a.k.a., CPU Extra-Cheat button)...http://www.ncaa.org/library/rules/20...ball_rules.pdf

the game does not call the rule correctly. the game will call you for 5 seconds in this situation.

player catches pass with defender on his jock. player stands stationary for 3 seconds, defender stays on his jock. player begins to dribble with defender on his jock. 2 seconds later the 5 second call is made. there's nothing wrong with that IRL. it has to be 5 seconds closely guarded while either dribbling or standing, not a combination of both. as soon as a player starts or stops dribbling the count is reset.

That's a first I've heard of that. According to what the rule says, that's what I heard 5 second count was. When you have possession of the ball and the cpu is guarding you, the count starts. It doesn't stop cause you put the ball on the floor or anything like that. The purpose of this call is to push team movement and ball rotation. To get other players involved. That's why having a good shooter really works well. Sounds like the game is cool. I'm curious to know though, when you get a pick or something where your teammate comes between you and the ball, will it reset??

If you look at NCAA games, they usually start the counting and continue to count regardless. The only time they stop the counting is if you get a lot of distance between you and your defender. Like a player going near the halfcourt to create more room for himself. Teams usually don't stick players that far unless they're in a special type of defense that allows them to.

Re: How Does The 5 Second Call Work?

Yeah, this is the first I've heard about the "5 Second Rule" not working properly. I only get 5 Second calls maybe once or twice in my games, usually when I try to drive and get caught when an open lane closes up on me. This is the first I've heard about the 5 seconds being restarted whenever the player catches the ball, dribbles, or gives up their dribble. I played high school basketball and the 5 seconds would start once you began to be closely guarded, and it never reset (either when I dribbled or stopped dribbling), the ref only stopped counting if the defender backed off. I'm pretty sure it's the same in college basketball, but I don't know from personal experience, just from watching it.

I've also wondered how much of an impact Clutch Factor made in close games, or in CPU comebacks. I left it on, but does it change outcomes of games often?

in a real college game watch the referee doing the count. he switches arms whenever a play starts or stops his driblle/restarting the count. in the rule it states "while only holding or dribbling the ball" that means it has to be 5 seconds exclusively holding or dribbling the ball, not a combination of both.

                    Rule 9
                    Section 14. Closely Guarded
Art. 1. Closely guarded violations occur when:
                    a. A team in its front court (men) or on the playing court (women)
controls the ball for five seconds in an area enclosed by screening
                    teammates

                    b. (1) (Men) A closely guarded player anywhere in his front court
holds or dribbles the ball for five seconds. This count shall be
                    terminated during an interrupted dribble.

The game's 5 second rule is broken. LooseCannon... MooCowMooo... luv_mist...you're wrong. I win.
                    lol jk

Why wouldn't they have fixed this after three years? Must be hard to program.

Has anyone ever gotten the computer to get called for this on this years or last years version?!?!?

I agree, this must be addressed. preferrably for 360 at a minimum!!!

yes. ps2. first time, i lost the game because i was playing for the last shot and waiting to start the play with less than 10 seconds. it may not be exactly 5 seconds but it did work last year for me.

An interesting reference site for those who care, includes a section explaining the key differences between the NBA, NCAA, and international game.

The most mind boggling part is they intiially had it right with 2k3.

No, I don't think you can. I can stay chest to chest with a guy dribbling around the perimeter, but everytime it seems like it is about to hit 5 seconds he passes.

Even when you double team a guy who stopped dribbling you will tie it up befor a jump ball before a 5 sec call is made.

So like you I have never been able to get a 5 second call on the computer.
