    Ratings spreadsheet

Here's an Excel spreadsheet I made for calculating player ratings for 2k8. I stole a couple ideas from the excellent spreadsheet TarHeelsUNC made a while back - being able to copy stats from the ESPN page and adjusting player's ratings for the RPI and SOS of their team.

These ratings are based on the highest per game totals over the last four years - I didn't want to use all-time highs. I think these ratings fit in better with the ones you see after a couple years in a 2k8 legacy.

I've included a "Readme" tab in the spreadsheet for those who have questions. I tried to make it as user friendly as possible, which I thought was the one knock against TarHeelsUNC's sheet.

At the moment, I don't have a formula for calculating OVR, LOWO, LOWD, or DEF. The ones I do have are: CLOSE, MED, 3PT, SHTR, SHDR, FT, BH, PASS, BLK, STL, OAWR, DAWR, OFF (rebounding), DEF (rebounding), STAM, and the tendencies.

If you have any questions, suggestions, or criticisms, let me know!

*EDIT* Made some formula and layout adjustments.

Good work, I'll try this on a couple of teams and see how they play!

      moe_42;

Nice spreadsheet! I can tell you put a lot of work into it. The readme is a nice touch. It would be really cool to come up with a formula for the overall rating. I've played with TarHeel's spreadsheet quite a bit, and his formulas are quite complicated to try and break down. I've tweaked his spreadsheet a bit for my own use.

Since I already rated some teams using my modified TarHeel's spreadsheet, I thought I would compare the same team using yours and see how they compare.

Overall, they are pretty close. It looks like your spreadsheet tends to be more generous with passing, 3PT, Defensive Awareness, and close shooting ratings and a little less generous on FT, rebounding, ballhandling, block and steal ratings.

Offensive awareness was almost identical in both spreadsheets.

And I like what you've done with the tendencies.

Thanks for posting this. I'd definitely be interested in checking out any thing new you come up with.

I need to play around CH's player creator to figure out how they computed the overall. I'd like to get my overall ratings to fit in with what DCAllAmerican and CubsFan worked out for their roster.

Thanks! I'm willing to take TarHeels' ratings as gospel. I really liked his sheet, but I thought it might be possible to figure out a few of the other non-athleticism ratings. I was considering tweaking the 3PT rating in a downward direction, so maybe I'll do that tonight.

I bumped FT down a bit because it seems like when real FT% is turned on, players tend to shoot a few points higher than their rating - this might just be a confidence thing, though.

I thought my last couple formulas for CLOSE were a little low, so I bumped them upwards - maybe I'll go back to those and see how they compare. I'll take a look at the others, too.

        Thanks for the input!

          Seryn,

I have said this before in the past. A problem that many roster editors make is having a preset overall rating that they feel a player SHOULD have. I feel that is working backwards. The overall comes AFTER everything is input, not the other way around.

          Nice work Big Moe

            Re: Ratings spreadsheet

            DC,

If you or cubsfan have any suggestions on adjustments I could make to have my ratings more accurately reflect the ones you used in your rosters, I would appreciate. After a lot of experimentation, I'm fairly confident in my ability to produce consistent ratings, now I'm just looking to get some input.

It looks your rosters are going to be template used for later editions, so your input is especially valued.

My hope is that this can be something used to speed up the roster-making process.

                Re: Ratings spreadsheet

The discouraging thing about this game is the number of teams. So no matter WHAT anyone does, it will be a long process. And people around here that don't work on the rosters seem to get impatient very quickly.

I'm not very patient myself, but I've been able to restrain myself from writing a bunch of "RELEASE IT NOW!!!!!!!" posts

That cracked me up. We have two people working on 300+ teams . . . Is there someone out there thinking, "Man, if it were me, I could knock that s**t out in a week!"

You'd be surprised. I probably got at least 5 messages on Xbox Live from random people asking me if it was done yet lol.
