Said to be in the over 500 dollar range . Is there anyone buying this system out there let alone see a need for it?

well with the 60 gig being 600 bones i'm sure this 80 gig will be a bit more.. unless they drop the price of the 60 gig..

Is there anything else different between the 60gig and the 80gig besides harddrive space?

No.

Since it is said to have everything the same except for that it might lose some PS2 capability, there is no reason to buy it when you can just upgrade the HDD yourself.

REALLY don't understand it AT ALL. You can easily upgrade your own HD, and if their going to go thru the trouble to put out another one at least match the 120GB of the Elite. Also if they do this they better make it $600 and lower the 60GB a bit or else it will probably not sell at all.

Agreed. If I need more than the 60GB, I'll just upgrade it myself. The difference between 60 and 80 doesn't really seem like it's even worth the effort of selling, unless the 80 is replacing the 60.

Unless they're adding something new which I highly doubt, there is no reason to buy it if you already have the 60 gig. Sony needs to be patient with these type of things, the last thing we need is another company trying to confuse (screw) it's con$umer base right now.
