Finally PS3 related

And rdeyes, I'm also keen on the XBR3, since my XBR1 is a pink/green POS after dropping three grand over a year ago! Sony or Best Buy WILL be doing an exchange in the near future!

nice read, this is just great news, It like getting a PS1/PS2 all over again, but the game will look better, I'm pretty stoked.

This update makes me want to buy a PS3. I still won't until the software is worthwhile, but upscaling is a big deal to me.

I know it wont make the graphics better per-say, but it will make the missing lines and picture look better right?

check my post history I wrote up a work around for ipod use when the PS3 was 1st released. It works great with an ipod or any USB device.

if this really makes the Ps1 games look better, this is making me wanna go down memory lane and pick up some of the old PS1 sports games..

For the record there is no promise that "scaling" will improve PS1/PS2 games at all. A good scaler just smoothes the lines to fill HD resolutions, since any device can't create information that isn't there (and the PS1/2 games are encoded at the 480i/p spec). Sure it will stretch the image to 16:9 widescreen and display at "up to" 1080p, but there won't be much image improvement, other than a cleaner look...again, assuming the scaler does it's job. It's purpose is to the "fill" the native pixels better than the display...which on most DLP/LCD/Plasmas are scaled automatically (if you have a fixed resolution).

For DVD's, you have the whole 3:2 and 2:2 pulldown and cadence detection that factors in, as to whether a 24fps movie is properly scaled to a 30 or 60fps 1920x1080 native display.

I'm excited as to whether they PS2 games just fill the screen, since the Emotion Engine notoriously underscans on most fixed pixel displays. If the games looks slightly smoother it's a big perk, IMO, but otherwise I'm perfectly content after the prior firmware upgrade that makes my 480p HDMI PS2 games look damn close to what they would on my ACTUAL PS2 console!
