Or does the TV still need to be 1080p to reap the benefits of the all-digtal connection?

BTW thanks for the info on the combined audio functionality. I thought I read that somewhere. But once again I would need to have an HDMI compatible set to get the audio out of the cable, as the DVI will only input the video?

Could I leave the audio portion of the conponent cable plugged in and use that for sound with the HDMI/DVI set-up?
Doubtful you will see a difference between HDMI/DVI and component. I have a 70" 1080p television and I could not see a difference between component and HDMI, so on a smaller set, assuming you have a smaller set, it would be very hard to see a discernable difference. And yes you can set up your ps3 to use the Toslink connection for audio instead of HDMI.

I agree, I just need to break down and buy a receiver with HDMI, right now I'm using HDMI for video and toslink for audio.

I wish I could, but I'm gonna give Microsofts poorly manufactured console one more try. i tried to do some surgery on it myself and actually got it to boot to the dashboard once. however, since that point it hasn't done anything. i'm sending it off to some dude to fix it tomorrow, so i'll be rocking two consoles.
