Any issues with older PS2s and component?

My brother-in-law gave me a PS2 and I just tried to hook up my old Monster component cable that I had when I had a PS2 a while ago. I get some pinkish flashes but no picture when I choose RGB in the system configuration. When I plug in the normal composite cables, everything is fine. I used this Monster cable before with no problems. Do older PS2s have issues with component or is it possible that my cable went bad from not being used in a while? I'll pick up a cheap PS2 component cable at the store and try it. I just didn't know if any of you ever had similar issues. Thanks

Try setting Component Video Out to Y Cb/Pb Cr/Pr.

Re: Any issues with older PS2s and component?

My first release PS2 runs with component cables but every now and then it has a bit of an issue. Sometimes when I start a game up the screen is all scrambled, but if I change the input and then switch back it fixes it. There was one game that I could never run with component cables for some reason and that was SCEA's MLB game from 3 years ago.

Would it still see the cable as component if I set it that way? Isn't the Y Cb/Pb Cr/Pr just composite (yellow, red, white)?

Kev, thanks. I'm getting the scramble before I even put a game in.

I rarely ever turn on the PS2 without a game in it, but did you try switching to another input and then coming back to the one the PS2 is on? I only have the scramble problem when my PS2 is hooked up to a LCD HDTV.

I've tried switching inputs to no availe. Does PS2 have any known issues with component on newer TVs? Like I said, this cable worked fine with my older Sony Wega (non HDTV). I guess I could hook up the PS2 to the Wega again and see if it works. At that point, I could narrow it down to the TV. On Guitar Hero, component wouldn't seem to be a big deal, but I like SSX3 and the jaggies using composite are annoying.

The one I never have any problems on is a HDTV CRT which is about 4 years old now. The LCD is the problem. Maybe they do have problems with newer style TVs?

The first Guitar Hero is one of the games that is always scrabbled for me at first. It is scrambled during the Harmonix banner at the start but fixes itself when the little movie intro starts up.

Re: Any issues with older PS2s and component?

My TV is only a rear Projection with HD capability, not LCD or plasma. Our Wii, using component, is fine. I'm going to pick up one of the less expensive component cables and see what happens. That would really suck if I can't use component with the PS2 on the big TV. At that point, I might as well hook it up to my older Sony tube TV in the other room.
