Can you watch movies without the error?
Nope. nothing I put in the disc drive works... blu-ray movies and games, dvd's, cd's... nada. Most of the time it won't even load the disc. Though if it does load it will start up and I'll either get the 80010514 error or the ps3 will just freeze.

I'm pretty sure it doesn't and if I remember correctly the PS3 manual even tells you how to do the swap.

Upchuck is right, it doesn't void your warranty.

It's comforting to know they send you a new one instead of a refurb 360 like MS did. I really beleive that is one of the main reasons that people have gone through so many 360's

I also got the Best Buy warranty which I like better. You get a new system right away.

The only bad thing is, is that if you return your PS3 for a new one, your warranty is now void. That wasn't the case for the 360. I returned 2 360's on the same 2 year PRP.

Plus, the PS3 PRP is $100, versus the 360's $70 PRP.

That is the way my Best Buy handled it.

well while I do think MS figures they can get away with giving people refurbished 360's, to be fair, they do have a bit of a volume problem. They can't realistically give millions of people new 360's when they die. The ps3 has far lower failure rates, so Sony can afford to give people who have one die the proper service and rightfully give them a brand new unit.

well actually I'm asking for my lil brother but if anyone can confirm I'd appreciate it. Also with him swapping out for a bigger HDD that automatically voids his warranty correct?
That may not be a bad idea. I've been reading a bunch of articles on this error and quite a few them seems to think that the problem may be caused by a faulty sector in the HDD. I'm not sure though... it looks to me like it's strictly a blu-ray drive problem but what do i know.

Edit: I might actually give this a try. I just found a hard drive at work that nobody has laid claim to yet... so it's going in my ps3. I'll let you know how it works when I get home.

You failed to mention the fact that there also has been about twice as many 360's sold as PS3's. That may have a little something to do with it too.
