Major Nelson confirmed on his latest podcast that if you don't like the Avatars, their not required, you can use your gamerpics.

Also, another piece of awesome news, you will be able to voice chat with the people in your party (up to 8) even if you all are playing different games, watching a movie, whatever!

thanks. I know it may sound trivial, but I would have absolutely hated being forced to use that stuff. I'm aware that there's plenty of people who love them, or will love them, but I utterly hate the whole concept.
