Gotmadskillz is on point here. No, the Wii doesn't compare in very many ways to the other two consoles, but that's almost beside the point entirely, which is, sales. The fact is, the Wii is considered "next-gen" insofar as it represents competition to the other two consoles in a way that, obviously, the PS2, original XBox, and Gamecube do not.

The Wii opened up an entirely new market to gaming - a segment of the market that Sony and MS didn't even consider, much less try to appeal to. I considered the Wii next-gen for its controlling system and for its marketing technique when it was first launched. As others have pointed out, all of the systems are current gen. It will be interesting to see where the next-gen takes us. I'm hoping MS and Sony try to do something more than simply upping the quality of graphics and disc storage space.
