They only did it once, and that was for the debacle where Live was horrible for weeks over the 2007 holidays. What a Black Christmas. They've had these 24 hours down times before, and never give out freebies.

I don't think so. Its stated as a maintenance update, but in the past these have been used as a prep for an update with content (In this case new stuff announced at E3).

Live is back up....sorta. Some of the stuff is giving me errors

Although there are no visible updates the Xbox after Live was down for the day, xbox.com has a new 'My Xbox' section. It has an art style like NXE and you can see your friends avatars.
