Do you know that from experience? I would expect Gamestop to just exchange his system, not call Sony to reactivate it and be successful.

Why is Sony required to unban the system? If they have a clear cut rule regarding banning systems then they have no obligation to unban this system until they receieve funds. Buyer beware when not getting from retailer. The only thing I say can be done is him trying to locate the seller.

Why Sony?

Shouldn't he sue the seller of the system? This isn't Sony's fault or real problem. The damages are to the buyer and that's the seller's fault.

I guess it's a lesson learned. I'd never buy a gaming system off craig list. Too worried it'd be a lemon and I'd be left holding the bag.

So it does everything except allow you to play online. Does it prevent you from getting on the internet altogether? Ie. can't stream content from computers on your home network....

So basically you're options are:
1) Somehow go after the seller
2) Keep the PS3 with no online gaming
3) Keep (still plays game, blu rays) and buy another PS3
4) Trade it in for whatever gamestop is giving for them and buy another one new or used with the gamestop credit

When its too good to be true it is. If you had any info on the guy 'd report his butt to Sony.

But I agree with their hardline on things like that.

How good a deal could it have been...a brand new one is 299.99?? I mean hell if I wanted a second system I'd buy a new one.

Its an investment of sorts.

Sucks but you have learned a quick lesson.

Buyer beware on 2nd hand gear. FYI i trade used controller to gametop all the time....they are on the verge of vailure and they still take them.

I buy a new controller elsewhere and use the credit towards a game.

I used to work for Gamestop and I wouldn't buy anything from them without paying for the warrantee too.

Man.. what a pain in the arse. I would never have thought that they would ban the actual console over a psn issue like that. IMO, it seems like sony's position on the matter is a little unreasonable. Leaving this system banned really does nothing proactive as far as settling the debt that the previous owner of the console ran up on his psn account.

Keep raising hell with sony. If you can provide a new credit card and maybe find a way to prove it is indeed owned by you, and not that other bum, I would think that they would let up if you make enough noise.

I dunno, I would think that the OP should have more rights in this situation. In no way is it his fault that the previous owner did what he did..

What if I bought a used GM vehicle from an individual that has somehow ran up a huge debt with their OnStar service? Would GM deny me OnStar service because the previous owner/subscriber ran up a debt using OnStar? Would they declare that vehicle 'banned' from using OnStar? Doesn't that sound a little absurd? Really all they would be doing is denying profit and alienating a potential customer.
