Will the Ps2 ever die?

theres STILL major releases for the system and it was supposed to have died off years ago. but here it is 2010
this thing might still be going when Nintendo moves on to another console.
whats the key to the staying power?>

i think the price, amount of games just to name a few. parents get this one for their kids when they want a system i think.

its just crazy hows it has gone on
i imagine the ps3 will have the same lifespan.

plus sony keeps supporting it so that helps.
the original xbox went the way of the dodo RIGHT after the 360 was born.

It'll be dead when retailers feel like pushing it off shelves, as there's really not any major releases for it anymore, but it's not shocking how long it's been selling.

It's the most popular console ever, and has long been pure profit for Sony. The vast library that features some of the best games ever made can be found dirt cheap as well. This generation also showed that many people don't even care about HD consoles yet, especially with the higher prices.

I have noticed recently that GameStop is cutting back its shelf space for the PS2. Most stores would have 1-2 large bins full of PS2 games and they'd also have games up on the shelf, both new and used.

The bins are disappearing fast and the shelf space is getting smaller. They are putting all the games that sell for $3 or less up near the register and you have to sift through the discs to find the game you want. Makes it a little harder w/o seeing the box title.

I love my PS2. Just picked up Gran Turismo 4 and still play MLB 09 The Show, Madden 09 and some Hot Shots Golf from time to time.

With PS3s not wanting backwards compatability, it will soon die.

Yeah I give it to the end of next year. Damn near every store I go to only have a tiny corner of a shelf dedicated to PS2 games, and most of those are the triple packs of games.

And really nowadays parents are buying their young kids Wii's as their starter gaming system now because it is more kid friendly, along with buying them a DS. The DS section in stores are HUGE

If Sony were to ever open up the PS2 to the modding community or at least make it easy for people to make their own games for it, then I think it could have a near infinite shelf life. As for it's retail life I'll agree with GMSS and say it will generally be off shelves by the end of 2011 or First Quarter 2012.

Yeah and because of that the backwards compatible PS3s are expensive.
