    Upgrading PS3 HD

I'm upgrading the hard drive on my 40 gig ps3. It's been good to me for the past three years and I would like to upgrade it rather then buy a new one.

I've got GT5 under the Christmas tree and I won't be able to play it until I upgrade.

Is there a certain type of external HD I will need ?
Will I be loosing any of my currently saved information ?

If someone just had a good link to follow, that would be much appreciated. I've goggled and searched around, but I would rather get a little bit of advice from someone on OS.

    There you go.....

Just need a 2.5 laptop hard drive. Plug n play basically.

Oh yeah back up your game saves and stuff on to a flash drive 1st. Then you can just load it on to the hard drive once you got it installed.

        Re: Upgrading PS3 HD

I recommend a 7200RPM Western Digital Scorpio Black.

Super fast for GT5, load times are much much improved, and the install was almost halved in time.

Other games load faster as well.

Here is another simple to follow video too...

        <object width="640" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/NNSytaL9hnI?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/NNSytaL9hnI?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="385"></embed></object>

I just upgraded my 80GB fatty to a 500GB 7200RPM WD, and it made a HUGE difference in performance and overall install times and speed.

I'll deal with that, when the day comes. My PS3 gets most of my play time, my new 360 is still collecting dust, as I've made the decision not to sell it.

Thanks for the information guys, I knew someone posted a link in a discussion a week or two ago, but I couldn't find it. It was probably one of you.

Upgrading the PS3 hdd is a piece of cake, but there is one thing to look out for. The screws that hold the hdd to the tray that goes in the PS3 are very soft, so make sure you are using a good screwdriver (like precision style ones) to prevent them from stripping. I stripped the first one I tried to take out real good and I had to use needle nose pliers to get the darn thing out.

sorry to sound like debbie downer but i kinda agree with Hova.

my friend who lives with me has a 40gb that just YLOD again and he bought it in 08. thing is, he doesnt play it everyday like i play mines.

either way, good luck though. these fattys are just like a ticking time bomb sometimes.

Yeah my friend has a 500GB in his and has a 1TB external HD attached to it as well. Funny thing is he doesn't play any sports games or any game that don't have a 2 player mode or co op mode for he can play with his wife.

I said why the hell you upgraded all that storage space for then ? Family Game Night don't take up that much space LMAO.

                    Re: Upgrading PS3 HD

I've had this one since early 2007 and I haven't had any issues with it, yet.

This is just a cheaper alternative to purchasing a new one with a bigger hard drive. When the day comes, I'll definitely look to get a new one, but I'm not going that route until I'm forced to.. this one has been good to me.

I hear ya. I have a 80 gig from '08 when MGS4 bundle came out that gets played almost every day. Been rock solid and still silent.

Was running out of room for games and GT5 was hitting.

Thus I upgraded to a 500GB WD 7200RPM drive. Rock solid and so much smoother and faster for installs and load times. I could not be happier.

I have a 400GB HDD that I thought would last me forever, and I only have 80GB left. It's definitely not just filled with games, and that's the point. Maybe he's the same way and stores a whole bunch of other media on it.

I got mines when they first had the price drops on the fattys which must have been in 08'. Still has the 60gig which I think I've only used half of, if that & its been faithful.

I read mixed things about replacing the HD with another that had a higher RPM than the stock HD.

You haven't had any problems with your unit at all since the upgrade, Enigma? I just got a PS3 and would love to replace it with a HUGE HD and also cut down on the load times. I'm coming from a 360 so I'm used to being able to install the games directly to my HDD and cut the load times down considerably.

No major technical issues, been overall smoother and faster.

Had some slight stuttering issues with Uncharted 1 cutscene, but I think that was due to some corruption... ran a file recovery in safe mode, and have not had an issue since.

Also read older games were the only ones with slight issues, that some believe dev firmware kit upgrades have better optimization for HDD cache and techniques. Thus I have had no issues with any other newer games I played.
