Best Way to Back up PS3 saves?

Since the 3.70 update my refurb 60gb fatty has frozen twice:

- once playing Madden 12 demo

- once playing MLB 11 the show demo

I've had this refurb for about 20 months and the life-cycle on these seems to be about 2 years.

Before I buy a slim i want to back up my game data (NOT upgrade my hard drive). What is the best way to do this?

1.) a portable external hard drive storage unit like Digistor (which costs $70 to $100)?

2.) buy PS Plus for $50 which gives me online backup for my save files? But how exactly does that work...how much online backup does it give? I have 45gb of game data on my fatty now. Can I backup my saves online with the fatty, then after I get rid of it download those same saves back to a new Slim's hdd?

Thanks for any help!

Also forgot to ask...i have 20 downloadable titles on my hard drive (which probably make up most of the 45 gb space I'm using). Can you store those on PS Plus or on an external hard drive or is it just game saves?

Re: Best Way to Back up PS3 saves?

I am curious about how people do this also.

I just used a cheap 2gb usb stick. I backed up all the saves I could (some won't allow backup unless you use the PSN Cloud). It used less than 1 GB.

Full games and other DLC is always in you PSN account and can be downloaded when you get set up on a new machine.

The frustrating part is downloading all of that content from PSN, then Installing and then doing the updates for the disc based games. I am not sure if there is anything that allows you to clone your hard drive but that would be the best option.
