Uh have you guys seen how big those high end video cards are? Unless you want the xbox 720 to be the size of a PC, there's no way they are going to be able to fit a high in graphics card in a console with proper ventilation and still keep it affordable. They already had the RRoD with the 360 the first go round.

Besides there's some trade off between high end graphics cards and developers being lazy....gears looks damn good on current gen technology, and they've squeezed out every ounce of processing power they could with the unreal engine. I can't imagine it looking much better than it already does.

Good point, guess a graphics card the size of an aircraft carrier would not be a good idea

Re: Xbox 720

I can get full games on Steam faster than demos on XBL so it's not just connections on the user end. Plus they'd both have to start respecting their customers and the thought of either of them actually doing that...

If you enjoy playing AAA video games with high production values such as Call of Duty, Battlefield, Uncharted, Forza, Red Dead Redemption, or what have you, you will pay $60 - at least - for a AAA video game. AAA video games cost hundreds of millions of dollars to make, as the programmers, engineers, artists, designers, QA testers, etc. who make these games have to be fairly compensated for their work.

Admittedly I say this from the biased position of a video game developer.

Maybe if that $60 trickled down appropriately among those jobs. But we all know by the time it reaches the staff, there's like half of the $60 left.

While I have no experience working at a AAA studio, my experience where I am is very different from your assumptions.

Besides, an argument can be made that those who assumed the initial risk of starting the company should be the ones who stand to make the most money, but that changes the topic to an argument on economics which isn't appropriate for this forum.

I would venture that the $60, regardless how it breaks down, is more often than not used by the company to fund development of projects, be it via funding R&D, design, implementation, new talent acquisition, bonuses for currently-hired talent, (in the case of games involving special real-world properties) license acquisition, marketing, or what have you. A lot of pieces and steps go into making video games, and they all cost money.

Video games have only gone up $10 in price since I started playing them 25 years ago. If anything we will see a price increase next Gen. I'm actually surprised we haven't already.

With that said, if you pay $60 (even on release day) for all of your video games now, you aren't a very savvy shopper. The only games I pay full price for are games that have good pre-order content. The rest I usually use Amazon who normally have $10 and sometimes $20 credits from the jump.

I don't know if it was a Canada-only thing, but at the start of this gen games were usually $69.99 instead of the standard $59.99. It's back to normal now though and has been for the last 4 years or so, I think.
