Considering Switching from 360 to PS3

The XBox died, and it's going to cost me $100-$150 to get it fixed. I'm seriously considering switching to the PS3, primarily for the chance to play MLB The Show.

So a few questions for you PS3 owners...
  • What should I know about it? Does it have rechargeable controllers like the ones available for the 360? I know that WiFi is built in and the Blu Ray is in there. But what else?
  • Does it come with a HDMI or component cable?
  • Is the PSN still free?
  • Is it backwards compatible? Can I play my old PS2 games on it?
Thanks in advance!

Neither

Is the PSN still free?
Yes, although they have launched a pay service that gives access to certain discounts and offers though I couldn't tell you any more..

PS2 backward compatibility has been phased out unless you get an older model. PS1 games still play I believe.
I tried to give the best info I could from memory. FWIW, I sold my PS3 yesterday and went 360 only. Nothing wrong with the system itself but all I play are games that are common to both and I found I was pretty much only using my 360 anyway. I will say though that as far as exclusives go, I'd give the PS3 the nod.

To answer your questions:

- The controllers are rechargeable out of the box.

- It does not come with an HDMI or component cable.

- The PSN is still free, but there is a PlayStation Plus service that gives you some discounts on downloads and some other bonus stuff like cloud saving.

- You can't play your PS2 games on anything but the launch consoles; they removed that feature early on.

Some other things to consider:

- The PS3 doesn't upscale 720P games to 1080P like the 360 does.

- Trophies were added after the PS3 launched, so every game doesn't have them like every game has Achievements on the 360.

- The PS3 doesn't have cross game chat like the 360 does.

- Downloads seem to go much slower on the PS3.

- As a sports gamer, I find that everything EA makes is better on 360... smoother framerates being the big one.

Unless you're playing a really old game, then it will have trophies.

I enjoy sports games more on my PS3 + the PS3 exclusives are unbeatable.

Uncharted Series, LBP, The Show, Ratchet and Clank, Resistance 1-3 , Killzone 2-3, inFamous 1-2, Heavy Rain, God of War3, and Twisted Metal (coming this month) are all solid games.

I have both so here goes:
Online edge IMO still goes to 360. LIVE is simply better overall package than PSN. Although being a PS Plus member has some great game deals.
Everyone else already answered the other stuff.
Both systems have thier own good exclusives so really in the end you should just see what system has the games you like the most. For sports its 360 EXCEPT for baseball as MLB The Show is second to none and the reason I own a PS3.
If you owning an XBOX still has you asking about switching to PS3 Id say the 360 doesnt have anything you'd miss so no harm in going the PS3 route this go round. You'll love The Show

Trophies were implemented July 2008, all games before that didn't have them unless a developer went back to patch them in. I think in fall 2008 is when they became mandatory for all games.

Re: Considering Switching from 360 to PS3

I prefer the 360 over the PS3, but... The Show is an excellent game and the main reason I got a PS3. Is the game worth the price of a system, I don't think so, but if you are fed up with the 360 the PS3 is a fine machine to own.

Yep, so you're looking at almost 4 years of games being released with trophies + the ones they went back and patched..

If you're a big enough baseball fan, It may be worth it just for The Show.

I like both my 360 and PS3, but I always seem to buy all my games for PS3.
