Sony readying new, slimmer PS3?

The FCC docs do not give us much in the way of details beyond this. Some point to the last system update, which changed "eject disc" to "remove disc." This could point to a cheaper top-loading unit, not unlike the one Sony released for a PS2 update.

I'd hate to see them go "backwards" to disc trays or open tops after getting slip-insertion units, but I will keep my eye on this in case my fatty ever breaks down. Makes me wonder what other hardware improvements there could be with this.

Could be a version designed to provide the lowest cost possible for the rest of the current console cycle?

Part of me misses being completely surprised by stuff.

I never had luck with the top cover PS2. My big PS2 unit worked for ever while I went through like 3 of those slim ones.

Probably a move by Sony to try to offer a model they can sell at a reduced price. They probably couldn't cut a whole lot more off of the price of the current models.

Probably still more interested in a Vita price cut announcement at Gamescom, they've gotten a nice bump in sales the last couple weeks in Japan but they've got to be getting ready to pull a rabbit out of their hat or something after sticking to their 10m forecast for fiscal 2012. Would be surprised if they've sold 1m in the last quarter.

If Gamescom is all PS3 and no Vita a la E3, oof.

they need to make a ps2 slim style ps3 slim. Get it as cheap as possible, because it's insane the ps3 hasn't hit the $199 price point yet.

I'd like to pick up a ps3 again for some of the games I've missed since I had one a few years ago, but not at the current price for a 2nd console at this point in the generation.

I loved the top cover. For certain reasons....
