Really not all that different, it's just overlapping console generations.

The ads:
SNES / Genesis / Saturn / PS1
Game Boy variants / Game Gear

Brands: Nintendo, Sega, Sony

Currently available consoles:
360 / PS2 / PS3 / Wii U / Wii
Game Boy variants / PSP / Vita

Brands: Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft

In 96 the video game industry was less than $3b. There are franchises that have sold more than that this generation and it's now an $18b industry and that doesn't even count the entire mobile industry that has come about since then.

Yeah those prices are close to prices for the consoles today. I guess that's why I only had a NES and the handheld Sega. I also had to save money to buy games, so I usually only got used ones. They would pay for rentals on long weekends though. Parents trying to teach me lessons about money.

Biggest ripoff in that ad is $30 for a RF adapter.

Even by 1996, composite was the standard.

Re: 1996 TRU Ads

The accessories were at least reasonably priced. Wish we had those prices today.

Prices for the games seemed very random, too.

I hate when the 90's are considered "back in the day"!

No doubt. I usually got one of those 2 games for Christmas, and had to buy the other one myself.
