Just checked my electric bill and it stayed roughly the same. No spike. And I have both next gen consoles and have kept them in standby mode.

since buying Sony 3 year warranty, I leave it in standby all the time now.

I dont see how anybody feels heat coming from the system in standby mode, I feel nothing.

Congrats! After Best Buy douched you. Your two best options are the Sony or Square Trade warranty. I went Square Trade myself.

If you bought your console from Amazon get this one:

If you bought it from another site you have to go to the square trade site to order or call them because they have a 30% off deal which brings it to the Amazon price.

I keep it in standby just in case I want to buy a game when I'm not home but I may start turning it off completely. My dad has unplugged it 3 times alreadt in standby mode. Thinks that's the reason for high electric bill
