Stadia / Streaming

Rumor of a Google Console coming.

google's gonna announce something at their big dev event March 19th. This is a render of a patent they have on a controller, but I'm expecting it to maybe look different and the patent was more about the function rather than the design.

  • Two pillars: streaming and a traditional home console, codename Metallurgy
  • Exclusive games using known IPs, funded by Google
  • Designed so games developed for the console will translate easily to streaming service
  • Streaming service will launch before the hardware
  • Currently planning two consoles, one weaker ("Steel") and one stronger ("Titanium")
    • "Steel" could be dropped because of production costs
    • "Titanium" is more powerful than Xbox One X
    • Sleep mode
  • Developers supporting the Google console:
    • Ubisoft
    • SEGA
    • Google's own first-party

Watch it just be a controller announcement on 3/19 for the Android platform, compatible with a streaming service and no other hardware

Interesting, nonetheless.

Some things I'm taking notice of;

'Exclusive games using known IPs, funded by Google' - Scary boasts that there will be a possible exclusivity purchases on a well known IPs.

"Titanium" is more powerful than the Xbox One X. - If there ever was a company that can absorb hardware cost losses, this one can.

I'm assuming a built-in 4K Blu-ray player too opposite the digital only console.

Re: Google Streaming / Console

Not a fan of the two console approach. No interest in a streaming only console especially if it's the stronger one. Like WTF? Only reason I have even minimal interest in what Google does is because of Phil Harrison.

Of course, as a Sony fan, I'll be more than happy to see Google, Microsoft and possibly Amazon fight it out to the death for streaming dominance leaving Sony to cater to those who don't want that or simply don't have the internet required for it.

Don't think the streaming console will be a big success. Just because most people don't have high speed internet. Then there is the issue of data caps.

Re: Google Streaming / Console

They'll have some convincing to do to sell people on streaming, but the Project Stream test with Assassin's Creed: Odyssey was exactly that. Very convincing playing a full fidelity AAA game on a Chromebook with no noticeable latency.

Perhaps this is why we don't have a 'Ubisoft Access' - it's coming as part of this service?

Perhaps but ACO was also a single player game as opposed to multi-player which would require more servers and stress them more. Plus, how many people really played ACO on Project Stream compared to consoles and PC? I'm guessing it wasn't many. It will definitely be interesting to see how it all plays out though.

Server capacity isn't typically much of a consideration when you're talking about Google and Amazon providing these services.
