Maxiell Prefers to Let Actions do the Talking

On campus star power forward Jason Maxiell is known as "Max", and in no way does it refer to his volume. If his nickname were based on his volume, he would be known as "Min." When asked about his minor hamstring injury he suffered against Purdue, he responded "It's Alright", when asked if he will be starting Saturday at Dayton, he replied, "Word" and when asked whats new in his life he simply said, "Not much." Max is a very quiet kid, but makes up for it on the court by showing his skill. Known around the school as being very mute, Maxiell did say he needs to work on becoming a verbal leader. Max is a standout senior and eye candy for NBA scouts everywhere. Coach Huggins talks about Max more than Max talks about himself. Huggins told us, when he is told to perform a play on the court, he simply gives a response of "Word." Jason Maxiell did have something to say though that is a little longer than "Word" or "Not much", he said his grandfather James Maxiell told him something when he was a kid he has never forgotten. "Don't say nothing, sit back, watch and listen. You learn a lot more without opening your mouth."

Bearcats Continue Winning Ways

On their first official road game of the season the Bearcats looked like they were right at home. Defeating the Dayton Flyers in Dayton, Ohio Saturday 76-58. Led by Nick Williams and his 4 steals the Bearcats forced 20 turnovers, had 3 blocks and grabbed 18 steals. Cincy also hit 6 three point shots sealing the deal on a perfect 4-0 start to the 2004-05 campaign.


Nick Williams sets up a play, he led the Bearcats with 15 points.

Eric Hicks was strong for the Cats off the bench, putting in 11 points and grabbing 9 rebounds. The Cincinnati bench scored 31 points for the team, meaning they have scored 25 or more points in all four games. The young star Asrangue Souleymane also was big with 13 points, 7 rebounds and a team high 5 steals. The schedule gets a little tougher for Cincinnati now as they will next take on Vanderbilt, but the Cats are still favored to win as they will be returning home.

Cincy's Defense is Best in the C-USA

The Bearcats have been great in their first four games, they have scored the ball well, passed well, and even made it to the free throw line more than most teams, but the one thing that stands out the most in the Cats 4-0 start in their defense. The Bearcats have only allowed their opponents to score 57.5 points a game, which is the best in the C-USA. They also are number one in the conference in steals, grabbing 17.5 a game, Louisville is second with 15.3 a game. Also, Cincinnati is third in the C-USA in blocks with 4.5 a game. As for the offense, the Cats are just as dominate, their 49.6 field goal percentage is the best in the C-USA, and their 80.3 points a game is second to Louisville.

The Bearcats roster has been great as well. Asrangue Souleymane, the new starting center for the Cats, leads the C-USA in steals a game with 3.2 and field goal percentage, posting an incredible 81.2%. He also grabs 3 offensive boards a game, second best in the conference. James White has averaged 15.2 points over the first four games, which is fifth best in the C-USA. The Bearcats are not known for having one or two dominate scorers, they move the ball around and rely greatly on their bench. Armein Kirkland is having a great season off the bench and is the leading candidate for the 6th man of the year award in the C-USA, which was won by Cincy's Tony Bobbitt last season.

With this effort both on the offensive and defensive sides of the court, the Bearcats should do well in the C-USA and be a contender in the NCAA tournament come March. Cincinnati's next test will in Cincinnati, against a good team in Vanderbilt.

Bearcats Win Nail Bitter at Home, Improve to 5-0

The Bearcats still have a perfect record, but their fifth win didnt come easy. Down 64-70 with only 3 minutes and 45 seconds left in the game, the Bearcats put together a huge run to win the game. Armein Kirkland had two straight three pointers tying the game at 70, then James White put up six straight points leading the Bearcats on a 16-4 run, and eventually to the 80-74 win. The Vanderbilt Commodores were the biggest test faced by the Bearcats so far this season. "The guys played great, and we were fortunate to get the win", coach Huggins said after the game. James White led the team with 23 points and after the game was asked about his clutch shots late in the second half, "I just put them up, and they went down. It feels great to be 5-0." White was all smiles and so was Armein Kirkland, another big contributor late in the game. "Everyone showed great heart tonight, they played great when it counted most."


Coach Bob Huggins confronts his team in the first half, they were down 28-36 at the time.

The Commodores shot nearly 50% from beyond the arch, as that was the reason the Cats fell behind and couldnt comeback for most of the game. Mario Moore, Vandy's shooting guard had 5 3's alone. The only reason Cincinnati didnt fall too far behind was because of how often they got sent to the free throw line. The Bearcats got 29 of their 80 points from the charity stripe, while Vanderbilt ony hit 14 free throws. Steals and fast break points also played a role in keeping the game in reach, the Cats forced 16 turnovers and were able to convert 27 points off the turnovers.

Out of the 14 teams in the C-USA, 13 teams have a record of .500 or above, including three teams still undefeated. Sure it is only four weeks into the season, but this conference is shaping up to be a very tough and competitve conference. Four teams in the C-USA are ranked, the highest being Louisville at #6, and the lowest being Charlotte at #23. With only a little over three weeks until conference games start, teams need to stay healthy, strong and win as many non-conference games as possible, because who knows what to expect in the C-USA.

Cincinnati Looking at Schwartz

With no new news from Jacoby Washington, the power forward from California, the Bearcats have turned their interest towards a shooting guard from nearby Council Bluffs, Iowa named Dyron Schwartz. The 6 foot 4, 198 pound high school senior has already said he would love to play in Cincy. "Its close to home, and I would love to be coached by the great Bob Huggins." Schwartz said. He is a 5-star athlete and was offered a scholorship two days ago from the Bearcats coaching staff. Dyron will be visiting the campus in a week, and Jacoby Washington, the Bearcats other prospect out of high school will be flying in for a campus visit tomorrow. He was offered a scholorship two weeks ago.


Detroit Gets Shell Shocked
"The Bearcats newcomer, Roy Bright, looked very bright dropping 19 points on the Titans."

Roy Bright, a member of the newcomers to the Bearcats ball club, had 19 points and 2 steals in a 87-54 defeat over the Detroit Titans. Bright scored his points off the bench, he was 6 for 8 from the field, hitting 3 three pointers and going 2 for 2 at the free throw line. His performance earned him player of the game honors, and some extra bonus points from coach Huggins. "Its great to see someone play as well as Roy did, and the fact that he is a freshman makes it all the better." James White also had a great game, scoring 15 points, grabbing 6 rebounds, getting 3 blocks and 5 assists.

The Bearcats forced 23 turnovers, had 8 blocks, and another strong performance from the bench, who scored 45 points led by Roy Bright's 19. Cincinnati also dominated on the fast break scoring, getting 30 points, while the Titans only had 2. Detroit was 0-7 from beyond the arch, while the Bearcats hit 7 threes in the game. This was the biggest margin of victory for the Bearcats this year, they beat the Titans by 33, before this game they had beaten the Purdue Boliermakers by 32 on November 27th.
