Eye of the Storm
A preview of Canes/Noles
Volume 1, Issue 5

Pressure on Noles to break streak, re-establish dominance

Tallahassee, FL- For Bobby Bowden and the Seminoles, it must seem like an eternity since they last beat Miami.

The Canes have gotten the better of their arch-rival six straight times, including twice in 2003, once in Tallahassee and another in the Orange Bowl Game. Two of the victories (2000, 2002) came in the Orange Bowl due to missed FGs by Florida State (what a surprise). There was one blowout (49-27 in 2001 at the Doak), one OT win (16-10 last season), one win in a downpour (22-14 two years ago), and a bowl win (16-14 in the 2004 Orange Bowl).

The Seminoles have been long overdue, and this is possibly their best chance. They bring animals on defense, such as LBs A.J. Nicholson and Ernie Sims, and DBs Antonio Cromartie and Pat Watkins. Their defense is solid, no doubt, but their offense is the key. They have experience at RB with Leon Washington and Lorenzo Booker, but their QB situation is as interesting as Miami's. Both teams will be breaking in new signal callers, with Miami's Kyle Wright going against heralded redshirt freshman Xavier Lee of the Seminoles. He can run and pass, and it will be interesting to see if he involves freshmand WR Fred Rouse in the game. Bowden typically doesn't like playing youngsters, but when it comes to Miami, you have to change the rules.

Key Matchup: Miami's O-Line and RBs vs. FSU's LBs
Prediction: Florida State 28, Miami 24

#11 Miami @ #5 Florida State
Doak Campbell Stadium
Tallahassee, FL
September 5th, 2005

Canes have just enough to win 7th straight over Noles

Tallahassee, FL- Florida State had it all put together. They forced four turnovers, had five sacks, effectively shut down Miami's ground game, and pushed into Miami territory multiple times.

And in the end, their kicking game screwed them again.

Seminoles placekicker Gary Cismesia missed four of his five FGs, and the Canes finally got there ground game going late in the game to kill the clock, and Miami continued their dominance of FSU with a 20-10 win in Doak Campbell Stadium.

Kyle Wright had a shaky start to his Miami career, going 8-17 for 134 yards with a TD and two interceptions. Tyrone Moss struggled on the ground all night, carrying 14 times for 50 yards and the clinching TD with a little over a minute left. The Canes found a surprise spark from fullback Quadtrine Hill, who carried the ball seven times for 39 yards. Tight end Greg Olsen caught 3 passes for 83 yards and a 68 yard TD late in the first half.

FSU's Xavier Lee was an identical 8-17 passing, good for 115 yards, with a TD and a pick. He carried the ball 20 times for 35 yards, while Leon Washington added 43 yards on the ground. Freshman Fred Rouse caught 3 passes for 28 yards and his first career TD.

On the defensive side of the ball, Thomas Carroll led the U with 7 tackles and a sack. Willie Williams, Bryan Pata and Baraka Atkins each had 6 tackles. Tavares Gooden had 4 tackles, a sack and a interception. For FSU, Ernie Sims was a beast as usual, with 11 tackles and 2 sacks. A.J. Nicholson had 6 tackles and a sack, and DE Kamerion Wimbley had 6 and 2 sacks. CB Gerard Ross had both INTs for the Seminoles.

The Canes did get some very bad news however, as Sinorice Moss was lost for the season with a broken vertebrae in his back.
