CLASSIC: Hurricanes tear down USC's empire, win 6th National Championship

TEMPE, AZ- In 1983, Miami was involved in possibly the greatest game ever, beating juggernaut Nebraska 31-30 in the Orange Bowl for the national title.

In 2002, the Canes were involved in another classic of all time, losing to Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl in the national title game 31-24 in double OT.

And now, they may have saved the best for last, as DE Eric Moncur sacked USC QB Mark Sanchez on the two-point conversion with the clock reading 0:00. With that sack, Moncur delivered a 28-26 win to Miami. He gave the Canes their sixth National Championship, ended USC's 46 game winning streak one game shy of the all-time record, and ended their reign as 3-time defending champions.

"This is a surreal feeling.....I'm at a loss for words, I still can't believe it," coach Larry Coker said as his players celebrated all around him. Some jumped around. Others showed newspapers proclaiming victory to television cameras. Others, like seniors Ryan Moore and Devin Hester, embraced and cried.

"I came here to win a national championship...my goal has been accomplished," the two time All American Hester said, obviously emotional.

It came down to the final two-point play because the Trojans had the poise of three-time champions. After Kyle Wright's bomb of a TD to Ryan Moore with 1:03 left put the Canes up 28-20, the Trojans came back. They got down to Miami's 44 yard line with under 20 seconds left, when Mark Sanchez found Whitney Lewis for a 24 yard gain, AND Devin Hester was called for a personal foul face mask. USC had it first and goal at the 10 with five seconds left. Sanchez hit TE Fred Davis at the 3 yard line. Davis then broke one tackle, jumped over another, and avoided THREE more, crossing the goal line with no time on the clock. That set the stage for the dramatics that will make this game legendary.

Kyle Wright finished 10-20 passing, for 199 yards, 3 TDs and an INT. Charlie Jones dominated on the ground, carrying 24 times for a monstrous 223 yards. Greg Olsen had 4 catches for 57 yards. DajLeon Farr, Ryan Moore and Darnell Jenkins each caught a TD for Miami.

Sanchez was 23-41 for 322 yards and 2 TDs for the Trojans, but he was also picked off 3 times. Chauncey Washington was efficient, carrying 23 times for 115 yards. Steve Smith caught 6 passes for 125 yards, and a 42 yard Hail Mary TD on the final play of the first half. Fred Davis caught 5 passes for 83 and a score.

Moncur was the hero for Miami's D, with 7 tackles and 2 sacks. Tavares Gooden had 6 and an INT. Freshman Marcus Gaither had 6 tackles and a sack. Glenn Sharpe had a 62 yard INT return for a TD on the 3rd play of the game.

Keith Rivers starred for SoCal, with 9 tackles, a sack, and a 79 yard INT return for a TD of his own. Terrell Thomas had 8 tackles, Rashaad Goodrum had 6 and a sack, and Lamar Smith had 5 and a sack.

While some of Miami's other national title teams may have been more flashy or dominant, this team will forever be remembered as the team that stopped the mighty Trojans.
