Re: Boston Red Sox (MLB 07: The Show)

Breaking News: Rocket return imminent?
Decision expected by the end of the weekend

Friday, May 11, 2007

BOSTON, MA - In a move that is coming earlier than most expected, the 2007 debut of Roger Clemens may be right around the corner.

After taking a 12-0 drubbing in Toronto and leaving Canada losers of 2 out of 3 to the Blue Jays, the Red Sox brass decided to put the fullcourt press on Clemens, their reasoning being they need pitching help immediately if they are to maintain their lead in the AL East, which entering Friday was merely a half game over the Yankees.

The Sox need a reliable starter to move Julian Tavarez to the pen and Tim Wakefield to the back of the rotation. They want that starter to be Clemens, but if not, they wanted to know soon so they can look elsewhere.

Their efforts appear to have paid off, as sources inside the Red Sox organization say Clemens has told GM Theo Epstein that he will reach a decision by the end of Boston's weekend series with the Orioles.

When pressed for comment on what his gut feeling is, Epstein was noncommital.

"Roger told me he watched the series with Toronto, and he likes the look of our team...which leads me to wonder if he really watched the series or not," Epstein joked with a small group of reporters early Friday afternoon at Fenway Park.

"Roger told me he will have a definite answer for me Sunday night, and personally, I like our chances."

Re: Boston Red Sox (MLB 07: The Show)

The Rocket lands in Boston
Clemens: "I belong in Boston"

May 14, 2007

BOSTON, MA - A popular phrase used by Red Sox fans in reference to Roger Clemens is, "He'll wear pinstripes into the Hall...and he'll wear pinstripes into Hell."

But now, at least for a little while...Red Sox fans will have to put aside their hatred for the man they dubbed a traitor.

A dozen years after leaving Boston for Toronto, 44-year old Roger Clemens is returning to the Red Sox, agreeing to a one year, 20 million dollar deal, with an option for a second year, if he decides to play next year.

The Red Sox play the defending AL Champion Detroit Tigers tonight at Fenway, starting a four-game series. But all the focus was on Clemens today, as he held a press conference with Red Sox GM Theo Epstein.

"I watched the team this weekend vs. Baltimore, and I thought, 'Hey, these guys are pretty good', and I told Theo I'd have an answer for him by 8:00 last night, and I called him and told him I'd like to play out the rest of my career with the Red Sox," the seven-time Cy Young Award winner said in the press conference.

"Theo told me he'd talk to Scott (Boras), and the contract would be ready to sign today. After I hung up with Theo, I called Curt (Schilling) and told him the news."

Schilling and Clemens last crossed paths in the 2001 World Series, as Clemens started Game 7 vs. the Yankees while Schilling started for the Diamondbacks. Now, they will team up to not only help develop Josh Beckett and Daisuke Matsuzaka, but attempt to lead the Red Sox to another World Series in the true twilight of their careers.

"I spent 13 years of my career in Boston, I know how the fans are here. Nobody knows better than me what they're like if you defect to the enemy, which is what they feel I did. I know there are still some hurt feelings out there, and seeing me back in town will bring those feelings back...I just hope I can win some fans back with my performance on the field," Clemens said. Clemens won four Cy Young Awards after leaving Boston the first time - two in Toronto, one in New York, and one in Houston.

In a move similiar to what the Astros did with him last year, the Red Sox will have Clemens start in the minors to get his legs under him before he makes his debut for Boston. He is scheduled to start for Boston's AA affiliate Portland on May 19th vs. the Reading Phillies. If all goes well, he will then start on May 24th for Boston's AAA affiliate Pawtucket, vs. the Syracuse Chiefs.

It is unclear when he would then make his Red Sox re-debut, but it's possible he would make his first start near the end of the month vs. Cleveland at Fenway. Once he makes his major league debut for 2007, Clemens will wear #21, the same number he wore for Boston from 1984-1996.
