Minnesota State Norsemen: Building a new tradition

Difficulty - AA
Quarters - 14min. Sim 20min
Sliders - AuburnALumni's

After recently being promoted to the horizon league from division 1-AA and Youngstown State dropping their program due to financial reasons, MSU was hit with a stiff penalty for violating the academic rules by the players cheating on their exams and failing to show up to class. After further examination of the scandal, every player on the team was involved including the coaching staff and the players were dismissed from the team including the coaching staff being terminated. Minnesota State was put on probation by having no scholarships available for the next 4 years.

In 2006, after the season came to a close Coach Wilderness who coached his JUCO team to 5 straight final fours and 2 championships was the leading candidate for the Indiana job. Weeks later he was sentenced to jail for DWI and fleeing the cops. Coach Wilderness had 2 DUI's previous from the DWI and had a constant battle with alcoholism. After being released from jail on parole in July, Wilderness received much help relieving his alcoholism problem and is now sober and ready to take another position. Despite his reputation being tarnished from the incident, he was flattered to be close to home after being named the head coach of the Minnesota State Norsemen.

Its gonna be a tough time from the get go for Wilderness, after inheriting a empty roster and no coaching staff due to the violation, he clearly has to start from scratch.

Starting from scratch

Coach Wilderness has his work cut out for him with no players, staff and scholarships for 4 years, Wilderness held a tryout on campus to start his journey on building a new tradition at Minnesota State.

The tryouts were horrid at best with a very few players with talent interested in the program due to the high prestige of their football program. Coach got a little help from his son Marcus, who originally committed to the University of Minnesota, decided to commit playing under his father. He got even more help as Marcus' best friend Felipe Fernandez, a highly recruited center who played with Marcus on his high school team and AAU squad committed to MSU as well.

Things got better for Wilderness as he now has two talented freshmen coming into his program but there was still much work for left to do despite the low interest in the program.

Community service

With Marcus and Felipe to build around, time was running low and it was September and they had to fill their roster quickly before their season begins with midnight madness next month on the 23rd.

First task to do on Wilderness' list was to build his coaching staff. Finding his two assistants was a little easier to pursue as he signed his assistant when he coached JUCO in Curtis Norton and University of Wisconsin's young assistant in Dawin Joiner. With the low turnout from the tryout he held earlier, Wilderness and his staff decided to take a different approach by visiting his old stomping grounds at the community college and other local colleges to pluck players to fill his squad.

With a few weeks remaining before the season and the madness begins, Wilderness finished his tour by visting more than a dozen community colleges including nabbing a few walk-ons from the big schools, finally has enough players to complete his roster before the season begins.

With talented prospects, Marcus Wilderness and Felipe Fernandez, this is very young squad with all of them being freshmen from Minnesota. This is going to be an interesting team to watch and how much they will mature over the next 4 years.
