HB Jason Concepcion *, 6-2 196, Grand Junction CO, #2210, AF, UCLA, IOWA, not offered 40 4.43, bench 193, squat 400, Awr B, AcPrstg Int High Talk to profs, Discuss depth chart, Visit trophy room Jason could be a pretty good backup HB. Pregame Wyoming beat winless BYU, that's it. Here is our best chance to climb out of the gutter by stepping all over the other team in the gutter. We have New Mexico, Army, Notre Dame, and SDSU left after this game, we need this one. Game Summary A low scoring 1st half, each team could only manage a single TD. 7-7 at the half. We had some bad news when senior outside linebacker John Rabold broke his wrist in the 2nd quarter. It doesn't look like he'll be back for the rest of the year. Wyoming TE Wade Betschart scores on a pass play at the goal line to tie the game up with 6 seconds left in the half. Each team had one good drive in the 3rd quarter, and once again exchanged TD scores. As the 4th quarter began, the game was tied at 14. Wyoming went ahead by 3 with a long 51 yard field goal from kicker Jake Scott. As the grim reality of losing this game was setting in after being forced to punt the ball back to Wyoming, a gift was handed to us. AF SS Chris Thomas scoops up a Wynel Seldon fumble and returns the ball 73 yards for the go ahead score. WYO 17 - AF 21. With thoughts of last week's game and our inability to sit on a lead, coach Tiger decided to run the ball, and run some more for the final 5:16 of the game. With 2:23 left in the game and Wyoming pinned at their own 15, WYO QB Karsten Sween coughed up the ball on an option play. Wyoming knew we were going to run, but we ran anyways. We only managed 4 yards and settled for a 28 yard field goal to go ahead by 7, WYO 17 - AF 24. Our defense just needed to hold for 1:33, that's it. We could not. Several key broken tackles and some mix ups in coverage and less than a minute later, WYO QB K.Sween found WR Hoost Marsh for a 18 yard TD score. Our defense had let us down again when it really counted. The game was tied 24 - 24 and we went into overtime. Wyoming lost the OT coin toss and we elected to play defense first. Amazingly our defense held with the help of a huge tackle for loss by Drew Fowler. Wyoming only moved the ball one yard and had to settle for the a 41 yard field goal attempt. #21 Wyoming kicker Jake Scott stares in disbelief after missing a 41 yard field goal in overtime. He had nailed a 51 yarder in the 4th quarter. We knew our defense probably wouldn't hold like that again and the offense had to win it right now. HB Chad Hall goes right up the middle for an 11 yard TD run to win the game in OT. RT Ryan Zeman pancakes his man and moves to the second level to clear the way. Wyoming's defense, tired and drained from the FG miss, just parted and let us through for the OT game winner. WYO 24 - AF 30 OT WYO offense 468 rush 36-136 pass 33-43-332 3rd 6-17(35%) QB Sween 33-43-332, 2TD, 3INT, 76%, 13-37rush, 1TD HB Seldon 20-102, 5.1avg, 7-39rec TE Betschart 9-97, 1TD WR Marsh 5-49, 1TD WR Wetherspoon 3-36 WR Ford 3-30 MLB Prater 10 Tkl, 2 Tfl CB Stinson 4 Tkl, 2 INT AF offense 308 rush 32-172 pass 10-23-136 3rd 2-10(20%) QB Carney 10-23-136, 2 INT, 43%, 3-19rush, 1TD HB Hall 21-136, 6.4avg, 1TD, 7-72rec TE Dekker 2-38 WR Root 1-26 ILB Fowler 12 Tkl, 2 Tfl FS Giannini 7 Tkl, 2 INT SS Thomas 4 Tkl, 1FF, 1FR, FMBYDS 73, 1TD AF Stars of the game HB Chad Hall, 208 total yards and the OT winner. Chad is really proving he can be utilized in the backfield or lined up as a WR. SS Chris Thomas, Fumble recovery and a 73 yard return for TD in the 4th quarter when things looked bleak. Postgame A game we absolutely had to win, and almost didn't. We had trouble containing WYO's pass offense and once again QB Shaun Carney struggled. At this point, I don't think sophomore backup Eric Herbort is ready to take over the starting job. I think I"ll have to cut out some of the deeper passing plays and take the game out of Carney's hands somewhat by running even more. We improve to 3-5 and now have 2 wins in conference play. Next week we face a dangerous New Mexico team that has a mobile but young QB in Donovan Porterie. We'll have to juggle the starting outside linebackers a bit with senior OLB John Rabold confirmed out for the season. The early plan is to have JR Trent Burney and JR Garrett Gilbertson split time replacing him. After the game, we made offers to several of the visiting prospects. 4 agreed to become Air Force Falcons. It was a great week in my young coaching career. Committed to AF ATH Jeff Sisk ****, 6-3 213, Air Force Acad CO, #177, CU, AF, NEB, offered 40 4.46, bench 336, squat 555, Awr A-, AcPrstg Int Above Avg B+ visit, talked up proximity to home after game and he signed! **** RECRUIT! Over CU, Texas, and NEB. We'll be trying Jeff out as a LB or possibly safety...or wherever Jeff wants to play. TE Brian Brown ***, 6-5 250, Greely CO, #587, AF, CAL, CU, offered 40 4.71, bench 307, squat 525, Awr B, AcPrstg Int High B+ visit, talked up Academic Prestige, offered and he signed over CAL and CU. Another great signing, Brian has good strength and speed. If we can work on his hands, he could be a threat in the passing game at TE without being a liability when we run. HB Jeremy Mitchell **, 5-10 200, Gainesville FL, #1141, FAU, AF, MIA, offered 40 4.41, bench 342, squat 450, Awr A+, AcPrstg Int Above Avg B+ visit, talked about program tradition, offered and he signed over FAU and MIA. We are looking forward to seeing Jeremy's 4.41 speed on the field. HB Jason Concepcion *, 6-2 196, Grand Junction CO, #2210, AF, UCLA, IOWA, offered 40 4.43, bench 193, squat 400, Awr B, AcPrstg Int High B visit, talked about academic prestige, signed over UCLA and IOWA. For a * star recruit, Jason may have some potential. ------------------------------------------------------ Local Headlines Falcons outplay Wyoming in a wild overtime affair. - Air Force finishes off conference rival Wyoming 30-24 in OT. Re: Air Force Academy Falcons(restarted) (ncaa08)
Week 9
October 25th, 2007, 9:00 PM, MWC Conference Game, Thursday night Air Force(3-5)[2-4] at New Mexico(4-3)[1-2] No TV Clear, 58F, 1mph Injuries AF - LOLB J.Rabold Broken wrist(Season), CB G.Rybak(5 weeks), FB R.Williams(4 weeks) NM - HB R.Ferguson(season), RE T.Donaldson(2 weeks) MLB G.Carter(Probable) Air Force Team Leaders QB S.Carney 97-188, 1058 yds, 7 TD, 15 INT HB C.Hall 147-726 yds, 4.9avg, 6 TD HB C.Hall 35-267 yds rec, 2 TD ILB A.Shanor 71 Tkl DE J.Clayton 6 Sk FS B.Giannini 4 Int New Mexico Team Leaders QB D.Porterie 113-201, 1686 yds, 13 TD, 9 INT HB 58-398 yds, 6.8avg, 6 TD (INJURED) WR M.Smith 50-815 yds, 4 TD LOLB M.Mosley 42 Tkl LE Tuohy 4 Sk CB G.Quin 2 INT Pregame New Mexico lost their last two at Wyoming and at SDSU. They are without their starting HB R.Ferguson, but have a capable backup in M.Epps. We are going to try and simplify the offense for Carney to get a handle on the interceptions. Game Summary The first half featured AF LB Drew Fowler all over the field making hits. The guy showed up everywhere New Mexico went. Both teams played well and the score at halftime was AF 17 - NM 21. The 3rd quarter started off poorly for us, Chad Hall fumbled the ball on a long run after taking a devastating hit. He was a bit dazed, but ready to go after sitting on the sideline for a few minutes. New Mexico turned the turnover into 3 points to take a 7 point lead, AF 17 - NM 24. The 4th quarter began with NM struggling to move the ball out of their own half. AF CB Kevin Rivers and SS Chris Thomas stop NM QB Donovan Porterie on an option play early in the 4th quarter. Porterie would fumble the ball, but AF would be stopped and have to punt the ball right back. With senior OLB John Rabold out for the rest of the year, backup JR Trent Burney makes the most of his opportunity. He intercepts the D.Porterie pass and returns it for the tying score in the 4th quarter, AF 24 - NM 24. The rest of the 4th quarter was played with one eye on the clock. Who was going to score last? With 1:41 left, AF kicker Ryan Harrison gave us the lead 27-24. Surely our defense wouldn't let us down in the 4th quarter for 3 straight games? While not a total defeat, they did surrender 40 yards in under one minute to NM, but held at our 30 yard line. NM was held to a 47 yard tying field goal with 39 seconds left. Rather than risk anything, we sat on the ball to go to overtime for the 2nd week in a row. Once again our defense stiffened in overtime, AF FS Bobby Giannini was key as he batted down a sure TD pass over the middle of the field on a 3rd down to force a field goal attempt. NM took the overtime lead AF 27 - NM 30. We were in this situation last week, our offense responded. Air Force senior QB Shaun Carney scores the game winner on an option play from the 7 yard line. AF 33 - NM 30 OT AF offense 356 rush 37-190 pass 18-33-166 3rd 6-13(46%) QB Carney 18-33-166, 2TD, 1INT, 54%, long 27, 3-10rush, OT TD HB Hall 21-123, 5.8avg, 5-58rec HB Smith 7-41, 5.8avg FB Peebles 5-16, 4-45rec WR Hemphill 1-18 WR Root 2-15, 1TD TE Dekker 3-15 TE Evans 1-5, 1TD ILB Fowler 15 TKL, 1TFL, 1FR OLB Burney 11 TKL, 1INT, 42 INT YDS, 1TD NM offense 451 rush 35-143 pass 22-39-308 3rd 7-15(46%) QB Porterie 22-39-308, 1TD, 4INT, 56%, long 41, 12-40rush HB Epps 22-87, 3.9avg, 1TD WR Smith 8-136, 1TD TE Mark 5-62 WR Brown 4-53 WR Jones 2-30 MLB Kase 13TKL, 4TFL, 1INT AF Stars of the game Drew Fowler 15 tackles - was everywhere making stops. Chad Hall - 181 total yards, he continues to be our MVP on offense every game. Postgame Another OT thriller. A game I would never really have expected to win, but QB Shaun Carney finally had decent day throwing 2 TDs and only one interception. Our defense just steps up their game in OT. A great showing by JR Trent Burney in his first game replacing injured John Rabold. We're now 4-5[3-4] and we've at least equaled last year's 4-8 season. I don't see anyway for us to vie for the MWC title, but we now have an outside shot at a bowl game. We'll have to beat Army and steal one away from SDSU at home in the final game of the year. ------------------------------------------------------ Local Headlines Air Force needs OT to get past New Mexico. - AF SR Chad Hall nets 181 total yards in unexpected 33-30 OT win. Pregame Win or lose, just as long as it's not another overtime game I'll be happy. Seriously, we've got 7 important recruits visiting this week's rivalry game so we need a win. I'm going to continue limiting the pass plays for QB Shuan Carney and rely more on the run. Army WR J.Trimble should be the only deep threat we have to worry about. Their HB is small and elusive, so tackling will be important today. If we want to go to a bowl game, we have to beat Army. Game Summary The first half belonged to AF's offense. We were just clicking both running and passing and grabbed a 20-7 halftime lead. This 32 yard screen pass to HB Chad Smith leads an early 25 yard field goal. AF LB Drew Fowler showing he can get out into coverage by swatting away an Army pass in the 2nd quarter. Our lead would have been even bigger at the half if not for a holding call on WR M.Moffett that nullified a 50 yard Chad Hall TD run late in the 2nd quarter. In the 3rd quarter, Army made things interesting with a long drive capped off by a 6 yard Pevoto TD pass, Army 14 - AF 20. AF could only answer with a field goal after being held at the goal line on 3 straight plays. HB Chad Hall holds off the Army defender and gains 36 yards midway into the 3rd quarter. This play would help get AF into the red zone and get a field goal. The 3rd quarter ended with the score, Army 14 - AF 23. The 4th quarter was full of defense on both sides. We ran the ball as much as possible to kill the clock and kept Army off the scoreboard. AF kicker Ryan Harrison added 3 points of insurance to give AF the win and a shot at the Commander-in-Chief's Trophy. Army 14 - AF 26 Army offense 198 rush 31-75 pass 13-25-123 3rd 7-16(43%) QB Pevoto 13-25-123, 1TD, 52%, long 25 HB Robinson 27-70, 2.5avg, 1TD, 4-36 WR Trimble 3-36 TE Larson 2-18 WR Wright 2-13, 1 TD FS Cooper 11 Tkl LOLB Rockwood 7 Tkl, 2 Tfl, 2 Sk AF offense 354 rush 43-159 pass 12-18-195 3rd 7-14(50%) QB Carney 12-18-195, 65%, long 40 HB Hall 25-92, 3.6avg, 2-48rec HB Smith 8-41, 5.1avg, 1TD, 1-31rec FB Peeples 6-43, 7.1avg, 1TD, 1-6rec WR Moffett 1-40 TE Dekker 3-36 WR Hemphill 2-23 WR Root 2-11 ROLB Altman 9 Tkl, 4 Tfl, 1 Sk ILB Fowler 8 Tkl, 1 Tfl K Harrison 4-4 FG, long 47 AF Stars of the game FB Scott Peeples, Scott showed some talent today, running for 43 and a TD, and bringing in one pass for 6 yards. K Ryan Harrison, 4-4 in field goals. He was Mr. Consistent and won us the game. Postgame A good performance on both sides of the ball today. We held Army to under 200 yards, and only had one turnover - a HB Chad Smith fumble lost. Sure Army doesn't have a great offense, but after giving up 300+ yards passing the last two weeks, it's a good sign that we can still stop someone. We're now 5-5 and have to go to Notre Dame and then host SDSU for the last game of the year. ND is only 4-5, but I don't expect to win that one, maybe not even keep it close. So our bowl hopes rest on beating a very hot SDSU team the last game of the year. Commits CB Tanner Crowder **, 6-0 188, Cherryville NC, #1022, AF, NEB, OK ST, offered 40 4.43, bench 217, squat 315, Awr A+, AcPrstg Int High Tanner loved what the AFA has to offer and signed after the Army game. I was hoping more prospects would be impressed by the rivalry game win and would sign, but I'm very happy with Tanner committing to AF. ------------------------------------------------------ Local Headlines The Falcons are overjoyed after a home win against arch-rival Army. - Air Force holds on to a 1st half lead, beats Army 26-14. Week 11
November 10, 2007, 2:30 PM Air Force(5-5)[3-4] at Notre Dame(4-5) National TV, NBC Sunny, 24F, 5mph Injuries AF - LOLB J.Rabold(Season), CB G.Rybak(3 weeks), FB R.Williams(2 weeks) ND - RT S.Young(Season), CB A.Wooden(Questionable) Air Force Team Leaders QB S.Carney 127-239, 1419 yds, 9 TD, 16 INT HB C.Hall 193-941 yds, 4.9avg, 6 TD HB C.Hall 42-373 rec yds, 2 TD ILB D.Fowler 94 Tkl DE J.Clayton 6 Sk FS B.Giannini 5 INT ND Team Leaders QB J.Clausen 149-295, 1658 yds, 12 TD, 13 INT HB J.Aldridge 158-764, 4.8avg, 4 TD WR D.Grimes 48-556, 2 TD LE T.Laws 49 Tkl LE T.Laws 7 Sk CB R.McNeil 4 INT Pregame Notre Dame's offense is struggling, I'm sure they'd like to pad their stats against us. I want to go out there and limit our turnovers, stay healthy, and at least not get walked all over on NBC for the whole country to see. Game Summary Notre Dame jumped out to an early 10-0 lead in the first, but AF looked like they may be able to claw back into the game after getting a field goal and a TD(but missing the xp) in the second quarter. ND's offense didn't care, they just kept on scoring and put up 14 in the second quarter. Notre Dame's first of many scores today. It was AF 9 - ND 24 at the half. The second half was all ND, they put up another 14 in the 3rd and added a field goal midway into the 4th. AF was held scoreless. ND's defense was just too much and we could not move the ball. AF 9 - ND 41 AF offense 168 rush 35-83 pass 10-14-85 3rd 3-13(23%) QB Carney 10-14-85, 2INT, 71%, 7-10rush HB Hall 17-78, 4.5avg, 5-28rec FB Peeples 6-9, 1TD, 2-12rec HB Smith 5-16 TE Dekker 3-45 ILB Fowler 8 Tkl, 2 Tfl CB Rivers 8 Tkl, 2 Int ND offense 453 rush 31-116 pass 27-34-337 3rd 4-9(44%) QB Clausen 27-34-337, 4TD, 3Int, 79% HB Aldridge 25-100, 4.0avg, 1-14rec WR Grimes 7-87 WR Jackson 3-78 WR Hord 5-65 TE Carlson 5-51 TE Ragone 2-22, 1TD TE Reuland 4-20, 3TD MLB Brockington 10 Tkl, 2 Tfl, 2 Sk AF Stars of the game HB Chad Hall, 106 total yards against a good defense. CB Kevin Rivers, 2 interceptions. ND QB Clausen was good throwing for 300+ yards, but not perfect, we did manage 3 interceptions against him. Postgame Coach Tiger was a bit upset at ND coach Weis for leaving his starters in the whole game, but what are you going to do? It's Notre Dame and they can do whatever they want. We couldn't keep the game close, but at lest no one got hurt and we did score a TD. We head into our last game hosting SDSU next week at 5-6. SDSU is now 8-2 after beating UNLV in OT this week and they now have won 5 in a row. If the players want to go bowling, they'll just have to end SDSU's winning streak. ------------------------------------------------------ Local Headlines Notre Dame Stadium hosts the Falcons and treats their guests to a 41-9 loss. - Air Force can't overcome the road crowd, falls to 5-6. Pregame Our last game of the year vs 8-2 SDSU. SDSU has won their last 5 scoring 40 or more points in 4 of those wins. Yikes. Yet if we want to go bowling, we have to knock these guys off. All bets are off, we'll do whatever we have to do on offense to get it done. I want to get this win for the seniors. Game Summary The last game of the year started with an outstanding AF 14 play, 65 yard drive for TD, eating up 5:11 of the clock. Shaun Carney found WR Mike Moffett for a 15 yard score. SDSU scored on an 80 yard pass play to HB L.Hamilton and a 6 yard pass to WR B.Swain in the second quarter, while AF could only get a 33 yard field goal. It was SDSU 14 - AF 10 at the half. The third quarter belonged to AF. After AF punter SO Brandon Geyer pinned SDSU deep in their own end, I let the LB's loose. We blitzed and blitzed some more until we got the safety. SDSU 14 - AF 12. We got the ball right back and drove into SDSU territory. Chad Hall finished the drive with a 31 yard option run for the score. We regained the lead going into the 4th quarter, SDSU 14 - AF 19. Chad Hall wasn't done. with 7:12 to go in the game, he ripped off another long run for a TD to put AF up by 12. AF SR HB Chad Hall speeds to the sideline on a stretch play, breaks a tackle and pulls away to the pylon for a 22 yard TD, SDSU 14 - AF 26. SDSU answered right back to keep the game close, scoring on an 8 yard scramble from QB K.OConnell with 3:55 left. SDSU 21 - AF 26. After limiting AF QB Carney's green light to throw deep the past month, I finally let him go. SDSU impact SS Ray Bass went out with a stinger and we saw our opportunity to strike with a backup protecting against the deep threat. AF QB Shaun Carney hits WR Mark Root on the 51 yard play action bomb to extend the AF lead back to 12. Once again our defense could not hold and SDSU drove down the field for a5 yard TD pass to WR B.Swain. With 2:08 to go in the game and down by 6, SDSU did not go for the onside kick. We've been in this situation so many times before and it hasn't worked out for us. We just need to put together one last drive to end the game. We're stopped at midfield with 52 seconds left, but we've forced SDSU to use all of their timeouts. AF punter Brandon Geyer boots the ball into the endzone and SDSU starts on their own 20 with 48 seconds to work with, down by 6. On SDSU's second play from the 20, AF LB Aaron Shanor seals the win and a possible bowl berth with an interception to end the game. We stop the drive before it even starts, Air Force WINS! SDSU 28 - AF 33 SDSU offense 451 rush 27-87 pass 28-38-364 3rd 4-10(40%) QB OConnell 28-38-364, 3TD, 3INT, 73%, long 80, 8-37rush, 1TD HB Hamilton 17-51, 3.0avg, 4-92rec, 1TD WR Schilens 8-92 WR Swain 8-72, 2TD WR Sampson 4-66 TE Schmidt 3-35 FS McKay 10 Tkl, 1 Tfl AF offense 376 rush 42-201 pass 15-22-175 3rd 7-13(53%) QB Carney 15-22-175, 2TD, 2INT, 68%, long 51, 9-33rush HB Hall 21-142, 6.7avg, 2TD, long 31, 1-9rec HB Smith 7-20 FB Peeples 5-19 WR Root 2-56, 1TD TE Dekker 4-43 WR Moffett 3-40, 1TD WR Hemphill 2-14 FB Peeples 3-13rec ILB Fowler 10 Tkl, 1 Tfl ROLB Altman 8 Tkl, 2 Tfl, FF, FR AF Stars of the game HB Chad Hall - 142 yards on the ground and 2 TDs in the 2nd half. Our money man all year long. QB Shaun Carney - 175 yards, 2 TDs, and he finally threw for over 60% completion %. An absolute pin point throw on the 51 yard PA TD pass to Root. Postgame Visions of Bowl games dancing in my head. This team is just not used to winning. In the past month, we have shown it. We don't know how to kill a game in the 4th quarter when we have a lead. Hopefully this win can start to change that for our non seniors for next year. We grabbed the lead in the 3rd quarter and held on to it. We end conference play 6-6[4-4]. I've heard the New Mexico Bowl is a possibility for us. I don't really care where at this point, just as long as we go somewhere. 6-6 is our best record since 2003 when AF was 7-5. Air Force's last bowl game was after an 8-4 year in 2002. We lost to Virginia Tech in the inaugural Emerald Bowl, 13 - 20. ------------------------------------------------------ Local Headlines Air Force 6-6[4-4], holds on to beat San Diego State 33-28. - Air Force finds a way to win, becomes bowl eligible.
