Pregame

AF CB Garrett Rybak and FB Ryan Williams are back from injury and will start.

Rice threw for 3000+ yards? I would have had no idea. That is a bit scary because we gave up 300+ passing yards to QBs quite a few times.

AF/Rice

PPG 22.9 (#90) / 28.6 (#47)

ROff #21 / #80

TDef #59 / #110
RDef #43 / #59
PDef #80 / #115

An interesting match up. Rice can throw but can't defend the pass. We can run, but can't pass or defend the pass. Rice's biggest win of the year came against 8-4 Memphis, 41-38 in OT.

We're going to go out there and run the offense that got us invited to this game. The offense we ran when we played SDSU where we loosened the restrictions on Shaun Carney. We'll try and establish the run early, air it out when the matchup is right, and try to protect the ball.

Game summary

First play of the game.

Air Force senior HB Chad Hall goes untouched 72 yards for the opening TD.

Rice is held for a 3 and out, but Chad Hall can't hold on to the ball this time.

AF HB Chad Hall gets stopped in the back field and fumbles the ball. Rice is there to scoop and score.

AF QB Shaun Carney threw an interception while being hit on the next possession, but Rice could not capitalize on this and missed a 51 yard field goal. Shaun Carney would make up for his mistake.

A 61 yard TD pass to WR Mike Moffett puts AF up 14-7 in the 1st quarter

The first quarter would end with each team going 3 and out and being forced to punt.

The 2nd quarter belonged to Rice. They scored on a 4th down and goal early in the quarter, but missed the extra point. AF 14 - Rice 13. Air Force could not get their offense moving, Rice LB T.Garmon was in the backfield all day and forced us to punt.

Rice drove the ball 48 yards in 8 plays and this time scored on a B.Benibo 1 yard run at the goal line. Rice took the lead, AF 14 Rice 20. On our next possession, a holding call forced us into a bad situation and we went 3 and out and punted. The half ended with a Rice field goal with 1:32 to go, and then an AF field goal as time expired. AF's offense had some momentum going into the locker room after their very well run 2 minute drill got them into field goal range.

It was AF 17 - Rice 23 at the half.

Rice got the ball to open the 2nd half and was stopped with a sack on 3rd down and had to punt. For the 2nd time in the game, AF HB Chad Hall fumbled the ball after getting hit in the backfield. Rice moved the ball down to the goal line, but the Air Force defense held on 4 straight plays and earned the turnover.

Rice QB C.Clement is stopped by AF LB Hunter Altman inches from the endzone to force a turnover on downs

Air Force's offense managed to move the ball past midfield as the third quarter drew to a close. Early in the 4th as the drive continued, Air Force laid the ball on the ground again. This time TE Travis Dekker after getting his legs taken out, dropped the ball on the way down as he was trying to cushion his fall. Rice recovered another fumble.

AF TE T.Dekker fumbles the ball right before he hits the ground early in the 4th quarter.

Luckily, Rice gave the ball right back with an interception on an overthrown ball. With 7:51 to go in the game, AF was still in decent shape, only down by 6. We just needed to get our offense going again.

On a 3rd and 4 in our own territory, AF HB Chad Hall drops a pass that would have resulted in a first down.

Both teams went 3 and out on their next 2 possessions. With 3:31 to go in the game, AF got the ball back on their 20. Sensing time was running out and we needed to come away with at least a field goal pretty quickly, coach Tiger decided to start putting the ball in the air.

Rice CB Jacorey Shepherd got his 2nd interception of the day, and sixth of the year on an off target Shaun Carney throw. Shepherd ran stride for stride with AF WR Mark Root across the middle of the field and timed his jump perfectly to come away with the pick. He then broke a tackle and ran 23 yards for the final nail in the coffin. Rice tacked on the 2 point conversion and went ahead by 14.

We couldn't move the ball as time trickled away and we turned the ball over on downs. Rice sat on the ball and won the Papajohns.com Bowl.

AF Stars of the game

Postgame
Ugh. Rice's SO LOLB Terrance Garmon was in our face all day. He had 7 tackles for loss. We had no answer for him in the 2nd half and we were held scoreless. This game started so well, but turnovers did us in, both fumbles and interceptions. Carney's passes were fluttering all day, even on his 61 yard TD pass.

I'd just like to forget the first bowl game of my coaching career and remember our 6-6 year. We had so many great players this year and I'm going to miss every single senior that is leaving.

There is a lot of work to do this offseason, we already have 5 very good prospects committed to Air Force, but we are going to need a lot more for next year's team to match this year's 6-6 record and a bowl game.

-----------------------------
Offense

Star of the offense: (Preseason Chad Hall) SR HB Chad Hall - Chad did it all for us this year. He lead the team in rushing yards and receiving yards.
Player that has to step up and become a star: (Preseason TE Travis Dekker) Backup FB Scott Peeples stepped up. When starter Ryan Williams went out with a torn shoulder muscle in week 4, Scott stepped in and did everything we asked of him.
Unsung star on the rise: (Preseason So WR Anthony Hemphill) LG JR Andrew Pipes. Andrew lead the team with 24 pancakes and only gave up 2 sacks. He'll anchor the left side next year.
Best pro prospect: (Preseason Sr HB Chad Hall) Chad Hall, though he is too small to play in the NFL.
Top three All-American candidates: (Preseason HB Chad Hall, QB Shaun Carney, C Blaine Guenther) We had no All - Americans.

Defense

Star of the defense: (Preseason SR LB Drew Fowler) Drew Fowler. 120 tackles.
Player that has to step up and become a star: (Preseason JR DT Keith Williams) Senior RE Josh Clayton stepped his game up and earned 7 sacks this year.
Unsung star on the rise: (Preseason JR CB Kevin Rivers) Kevin Rivers. Lead the team with 6 interceptions and moved into the number 2 spot quit well when SR CB Garrett Rybak was out injured.
Best pro prospect: (Preseason SR LB Drew Fowler) Drew Fowler. I hope he turned some heads and hets picked up in the late rounds.
Top three All-American candidates: (Preseason LB Fowler, FS Giannini, CB Rybak) We had no All - Americans

The Bullard Award: Falcon Football’s Highest Honor
The Bullard Award is voted on by the team based on the criteria that typifies Brian Bullard – unselfishness, 110 percent effort, total team commitment and pride in his role on the team whether he’s a starter or not.

This year's Bullard Award was given to Captain of the defense, Drew Fowler. Drew ends the year averaging 9.2 tackles a game, and he probably will lead the nation with 120 tackles. He was a force on the inside stopping the run and he improved his coverage skills his senior year. Drew will not easily be replaced.
